INTRODUCTION
THM 440-T4 (4T60)
We would like to thank General Motors Corporation for the information and illustrations that have made this
booklet possible. This booklet contains the general description, diagnosis and overhaul procedures necessary to
repair, overhaul, or service the THM 440-T4 overdrive automatic transaxle.
The THM 440-T4 is a fully automatic front wheel drive transaxle. It provides Park, Reverse, Neutral and four
forward speeds, with fourth gear being overdrive. Changing of the four forward gears is fully automatic, in
relation to vehicle speed and throttle position. Vehicle Speed Signals (Governor), Throttle Position Signals
(T.V. Cable), and Engine Torque Signals (Modulator) are constantly sent to the transaxle valve body to provide
the proper gear ratio for maximum efficiency and performance at all throttle openings.
