General
1. General
1.1 Manufacturer
These instructions are a general, valid set of instructions. They are continuously
being revised and expanded through a specific technical description and
technical data of the respective slip ring type and also by system components,
where necessary.
Please observe Chapter “10. Appendix” on page 60.
1.3 Descriptions
The descriptions and drawings are schematic diagrams and can deviate slightly
from the original due to technical changes.
POS Description
A slip ring is used for transferring electrical power and signals from a fixed (stator)
to a rotating component (rotor) of a system.
The enclosed slip ring primarily consists of rotor, stator, and bearing. The rotor
carries one or more modules. Such a module usually consists of a cylindrical
epoxy-hardened body in which specially surface-treated sliding tracks are cast on
the circumference.
Contacts, which are carried on the stator side by brush blocks, slide on the tracks
of the module. These contacts (brushes) consist either of a metal-graphite carbon
or a precious metal alloy.
The device connections for rotor and stator can consist of plug connections,
cables, terminal boxes, soldered terminal points or other electrically approved
interfaces whose contacts are connected in each case with the sliding tracks or
brushes in the inside of the slip ring. Slip rings can be outfitted with an additionally
attached rotating media pass-through through which a liquid or gaseous medium
can be transferred between rotor and stator.
It is also possible to equip the slip rings with one or multi-channel optical rotating
transmitters. A corresponding hollow shaft is used in this case.
The slip ring itself does not contain a drive and does not fulfil any additional
supporting mechanical function other than the function of transmitting electrical or
hydraulic, pneumatic power or optical signals.
The type plate provides information about the exact type of the slip-ring
transmitter. It is located on the housing of the slip ring and can appear as follows:

POS Description
Transport the slip ring in the installed position or turned by 90°. Use the original
shipping packaging as much as possible.
If the original shipping packaging is no longer available, store the slip ring in foam
material.
Carefully read the following chapter and observe the safety information. If you are
unsure or do not understand an instruction, please contact Schleifring und
Apparatebau GmbH.
The slip ring was manufactured using state-of-the-art technology in compliance
with known and accepted safety measures. To achieve the best-possible safety,
it is imperative that all safety information in these installation and maintenance
instructions is observed and complied with.
Safety Warning stickers can be located on the slip ring as an additional warning about
instructions on hazards. The warning stickers are attached by the manufacturer and may not be
the slip ring removed. If a warning sticker is damaged and thus illegible, a new warning sticker
must be attached immediately.
You can obtain warning stickers from the manufacturer.
Electric current
risk
• When performing all work on the slip ring, all electrical elements must be
de-energised (switched to zero-potential).
The slip ring is designed for the specific use in wind energy plants and may only
be used there and in the specified manner provided by the customer.
Electrical pitch control drives are arranged in the rotating hub of the wind energy
plant. Power supply, control signals and bus communication to these adjustment
drives are transferred using the slip ring. The slip ring is attached to the gear drive
concentrically to the main shaft. The cables from the rotating part of the slip ring
(rotor) run through the gear drive and through the main shaft to the hub area. The
housing of the slip ring (stator) is secured against distorting using torque
supports.
The technical data may not be exceeded. Please observe Chapter “6. Technical
data” on page 30.
Danger to
persons
• The technical data may not be exceeded. Please observe Chapter “6.
Technical data” on page 30.
Risk of damage To prevent damage to the slip ring and the system in which it is used, the following
instructions must be followed.
The operating company must ensure that the slip ring and all modules included in
the scope of supply are only then used once their safety has been determined
according to machinery directive 2006/42/EC, Appendix IIA.
For the preservation of safety, the operating company must ensure that all
specified maintenance and repair work is carried out properly.
The installation and operating personnel must be regularly instructed about the
safety regulations and possible residual hazards of the slip ring.
The installation and maintenance instructions must be accessible to the
installation personnel at the machine.
The operating company must monitor that the slip ring is only operated in a
perfect condition using all safety equipment.
All work performed on electrical components may only be carried out by specially
trained electricians.
2.6 Conformity
The slip ring is not subject to the directive 2004/108/EC for compliance with the
electromagnetic compatibility (implemented in national German law in the EMC
directive). The user is responsible for adherence to the directives, laws and
standards for electromagnetic compatibility and using the slip-ring transmitter. If
you require guidance on this, please contact the Schleifring und Apparatebau
GmbH.
The documentation includes a declaration of incorporation according to
machinery directive 2006/42/EG Appendix II B.
3. Component overview
The main elements of the slip ring are displayed and described in the following.

Installation hazards
To prevent deformation of the slip ring bearings, the slip ring is designed so that
only the stator or the rotor may be securely screwed together with the system.
The respective part that is not bolted is held unconstrained in position by a catch
or a rubber buffer.
Only install the slip ring as described in the following chapters.
The selection of suitable fasteners is the responsibility of the operator provided it
is not included in the scope of the order.
The installation must be carried out in a manner so that the weight of the slip ring
and any occurring vibrations on the slip ring do not cause loosening of or damage
to the flange.
For the dimensioning of the fasteners, please see the weight and torque
specifications listed in Chapter “6. Technical data” on page 30.
You must also observe that the motion of the rotating parts is not blocked by any
obstacles.
All fasteners attached by the user must be checked for firm seating before
commissioning the slip ring.
Material We recommend having at least the following material ready. In this regard, please
also observe the drawings with the part numbers listed in Chapter “10. Appendix”
on page 60.
The material is also available as a set with the article number 530 004 348.

Check that the power plugs (c and d) and the signal plugs (a and b) are each
facing each other.
The centring pins (f) are used as an aid when connecting the slip ring. However,
you must ensure that the rotor and stator are not tilted more than approximately
2° to each other when connecting together.
If this angle is too large, the centring pins (f) will jam in the centring sockets (e) in
there is a risk of damaging the connectors.
