start reading.
I make questions from a reading
text before, during, and after
reading it.
I try to get the meaning of new

words as I see them for the
first time.
I look for familiar concepts/ideas

that spark my interest as I read.
I look for the main ideas as I read.

2. Memorizing Often
5 4 3 2 1
I try to study during my personal

peak time of energy to
increase my concentration level.
I learn with the intention of
remembering.
I practice the materials I
am learning by reciting out loud.
I change my notes into my own
words, for better
understanding.
I try to create connections between
new material I am trying
to learn and information I already
know.

Always Very Often Sometimes Never

3. Preparing for Often
Tests/Examination 5 4 3 2 1

I study with a classmate or

group.
When I don’t understand
something, I get help from tutors,
classmates, and my instructors.
I try to find out what the exam will
cover and how the exam will be
graded.
I anticipate what possible questions
may be asked on my
tests and make sure I know the
answers.
I usually get a good night rest prior
to a scheduled exam.

I study where there is good indirect
lighting.
I study in a room where the temperature is
not too warm (less than 70ͦ).
The desk or tabletop area where I study is
always clear except for the materials for
the subject I am currently studying.
I study in a quiet place to avoid
auditory distractions.
I study facing a wall or a corner to
minimize distracting sights.

2. Time: When and How much to Often s
Study 5 4 3 1

I use my “most alert” times for
studying (I avoid wasting my best
times in coffee houses drinking
coffee, on Facebook, etc.).
I review my class notes within one day
after the class in which they were taken.
Each goal that I set before taking a
break never takes more than about an
hour to complete.
I take breaks for progress, not for
fatigue or daydreaming.

At the start of each week, I carefully plan

my study schedule for the week.

3. Condition: How to Study Often s
5 4 3 1
2
When I am working on a major
project, I break it down into smaller
steps to finish it easily.
When studying text material, I try to
determine what kinds of questions will
be asked on exams, and read the text
with the idea of discovering answers to
those questions.
When I am learning a definition, I try to
think of at least two examples of how it
might be applied or used.
When I am learning a material, I ask
myself questions and study until I can
give the answer.
I attend review sessions.
