Sample Lesson on Differentiated Instruction

Subject Area: Mathematics


Grade Level: Elementary (Grade I)
Rationale: Embedding assessment with instruction can be done with Tiered lessons. Beginning
the lesson where the pupils are and moving on to a more challenging activities
promotes success and achievement.

Resources Needed:
 24 envelopes
 Coins in 1₵, 5₵, 10₵, and 25₵
 Answer sheet
Learning Activity:
Pupils are group according to their level of understanding of counting numbers. They
are instructed to do the following steps on their answer sheet.
(1) Arrange coins from highest to lowest value.
(2) Trace/draw the coins in value order.
(3) Write the value on each coin.
(4) Count the value and write it to the right of the row of coins.
(5) Tell the story sentence to their pair and the other pair to check the work.
Tier I: Basic Learners
Given an envelope I with coins of different denomination work with a pair to illustrate
three (3) ways on how to come up with the sum of 20 cents.
Tier II: Grade Level Learners
Given an envelope I with coins of different denomination work with a pair to illustrate
three (3) ways on how to come up with the sum of 50 cents.
Tier III: Advanced Learners
Given an envelope I with coins of different denomination work with a pair to illustrate
three (3) ways on how to come up with the sum of 1 peso.
General Instruction:
Each tier will complete the following activities with respect to their content, the creation
of A “Counting Number” Book. Pupils will draw objects to show five (5) ways to come up with
sum of 20 (Tier I), sum of 50 (Tier II), and sum of 100 (Tier III).
