JDM A28
Specification for Fluid Line Tubing of Carbon and Low
Alloy Steels

1 Scope
JDM A28 specifies requirements for eight grades of low carbon and low alloy single wall pressure tubing
typically used as fluid line tubing in hydraulic, air conditioning, fuel, oil, and air applications.

2 Designations
Table 1 shows JDM A28 grade designations as well as applicable standards, material descriptions, and
typical applications for each grade. Selection of an appropriate JDM A28 tubing grade depends on a
combination of the intended application, end connection types, and secondary bending and flaring
processes used to fabricate the tubing.

3 Requirements

3.1 JDM A28 tubing shall conform to the requirements of one or more of the applicable standards
shown in Table 1 for the specified grade. Tubing specified to technically equivalent standards, which are
not shown in Table 1, may be substituted only with written approval of the purchaser.

3.2 JDM A28D tubing shall have an internal cleanliness equal to or better than Class 6.2 of JDS-G169
when tested in conformance to JDQ 64.

Summary of Changes from Previous Edition
(For Information Only — Not Part of the Standard)

The following new JDM A28 grade designations are added with identification of applicable standards,
material descriptions, and typical applications for each grade. Typical applications are added for the four
previous JDM A28 grade designations.

• JDM A28E Welded flash controlled, SAE 1021 carbon steel tubing, normalized for bending,
double flaring, and bending
• JDM A28F Welded and cold-drawn, SAE 1021 carbon steel tubing, normalized for bending
and flaring
• JDM A28G Welded flash controlled, high strength low alloy steel hydraulic tubing, sub-
critically annealed for bending, double flaring, and beading
• JDM A28H Welded and cold-drawn, high strength low alloy steel hydraulic tubing, sub-
critically annealed for bending and flaring
