In the four steps of the H.E.A.R. model, I had the easiest time asking for more information as I
already have a tendency to do so. I had some difficulty hearing the other person out because I am
worried they’ll start crying which I hate to encounter.
Prompt #2: Describe the difference between using H.E.A.R. and not using H.E.A.R.
The difference between the two is the inability to deeply understand or be curious of the feelings
behind the other person’s reaction. You can hear someone out but if you are not utilizing the
H.E.A.R. you are likely to not have listened carefully and acted accordingly.
Prompt #3: Were you able to identify the EVENT? Were you able to identify the other person's
REACTION? Describe the EVENT and the REACTION.
The event and reaction were easy to distinguish. The event was that they were having an
inconvenient day filled with reckless drivers, bakery out of items, and forgetting their wallet at
home. Their reaction was filled with lots of frustration.
Prompt #4: Describe how successfully or unsuccessfully your partner used the H.E.A.R. Model.
My partner in this case was my mother. She had difficulty in hearing me out and was quick to
counteract. She kept responding with “Why don’t you---?” rather than trying to understand what
I’m saying first. After a few attempts, her questions became less objective and more open-ended.
Ury’s three most important reasons to listen are that it helps us understand the side, it helps us
connect with the other person, and it increases the likelihood that the other party will listen to
what we have to say as well.
Prompt #6: Connect a personal experience to each of those 3 Most Important Reasons to Listen.
Your experience may be a time when either you successfully or unsuccessfully made use of that
reason.
Oftentimes when my significant other and I encounter a disagreement, we always try to deal with
it immediately. This entails making the effort to understand the other person. When we make the
effort to understand, it becomes inevitable to bring us closer together. When trying to make
amends, it’s easier to listen to what the other person has to say once they’ve heard us out.
Prompt #7: Identify at least one additional insight from Ury's Video that you find interesting or
pertinent or useful. Be sure to explain why you find it interesting, pertinent, or useful.
One point that I found to be useful was Ury stating that in order to listen to the other side, we
have to listen to ourselves first. This was especially useful for me because before listening to
what the other side has to say, you yourself should be in a position where you have the mental
space to do so.
