MODULE 2: MORALITY

MODULE 1: ETHICS
-Comes from the Greek word ethos ---meaning character or a characteristic way of acting.
-is the study of the moral behavior or conduct of man as viewed from ultimate principles are known by human reason.
Business Ethics- is concerned primarily with the relationship between business goals and techniques.
it is also studies the impacts of laws for the benefits of the individual and the company.
2 types of ethics
1. Human act- is one that proceeds from the deliberate free will of man.
2. Act of man- is one that is not dependent upon intellect and free will.

3 essential attributes of human act


1. Performing by a conscious agent- who is aware of what he is doing and consequences.
2. Performing by an agent who is acting freely- by volition and powers.
3. Performing by ab agent who decides willfully to carry out the act.

4 Primary sources from which we get our values.


1. Experience as the source of values
2. Culture as the source of values
COLEMAN (1984) – A social scientist suggests that these core values reflect a particular culture orientation in 5
constant aspect of the human condition
a. Human nature orientation
b. Environment orientation
c. Time orientation
d. activity orientation
e. Interpersonal orientation
3. Science as a source of values
4. Religion as a source of values

1. Quality is a company- wide

8. Quality involves constant improvement
9. Quality is the most cost-effective and least capital-intensive route to productivity.
10. Quality is implemented with the total systematic integration of customers and suppliers

5 Step Test of Ethics


1. Is the decision legal?
2. Is the decision fair?
3. Does the decision hurt anyone?
4. Have I been honest with those affected?
5. Can I live with my decision?

MODULE 2: Morality

Comes from the Greek word of moralis- means of customs and manners.
3 Elements of Morality
1. the act itself
2. purpose or end
3. circumstances

The Norms of Morality

1. Norms are purely internal – they argue that this the only valid rules.
2. Norm- Based on current opinions and customs- determine the acceptable mode of acting
- Everybody is doing it.
3. The norm of expediency- is objectively right and wrong.
4. The norm of preference-who act by what is desirable what one “prefers” doing rather than what is right and wrong.
5. Situation Ethics- there are no objective standards for human activity.
6. Discussion analysis-ethics or morality is not a matter of current opinions or actions of the majority.
Morality and Etiquettes
Etiquette- refers to any special code of behavior or courtesy.
Bad etiquettes- means to eat with one’s finger during formal dinner.
Good etiquettes- typically calls for follow up letter, returning phone calls and appropriate dress.
-considered to say “ please” and ‘thank you”
bad manners- is black and white to eat together
Ill mannered- to violate the rule and be ruled.
well mannered-who obeyed the convention and certainly had no grounds for feeling moral.

Morality and Law


1. Statutes law- enacted by legislative bodies.
2. Common Law- refers to laws applied in the English- speaking world before there were any statutes.
3. Administrative regulations law- legislatures are often set up boards or agencies.
4. Constitutional Law-refers to court rulings on any law.
Socially Appropriate- means Good or Bad
Socially inappropriate- means right or wrong
