Desktop computers, laptops, personal digital assistant (PDA), tablets & smartphones are
all types of microcomputers. These computers are the cheapest among the other three
types of computers. The Micro-computers are specially designed for general usage like
entertainment, education and work purposes.
The teacher uses the computer system and pictures of tools and machines made for each
category of computer to describe the topic.
The students are engaged with identifying the different sizes of computers and their features.

E.INTRODUCTION:
Classification refers to the way objects are grouped or categorized. Classification of Computer
system is required in order to fully appreciate the concept of Computing. Computers are classified in
different ways.
General purpose computers are designed to perform a wide variety of functions and
operations. These computers can store and execute different programs in its internal storage.
Most computers in use today are General-Purpose computers
3
Note: A general purpose computer is often understood to be a large system, capable of
supporting remote terminal operations, but it may also be a smaller computer, e.g., a desktop
workstation.
Step 2: Special-purpose computers
As the name states, Special-Purpose Computers are designed to be task specific and most of the
times their job is to solve one particular problem. They are also known as dedicated computers,
because they are dedicated to perform a single task over and over again.
Such a computer system would be useful in playing graphic intensive Video Games, traffic lights
control system, navigational system in an aircraft, weather forecasting, satellite launch /
tracking, oil exploration, and in automotive industries, keeping time in a digital watch, or Robot
helicopter.
The teacher uses the computer system and pictures of tools and machines made for each
category of computer to describe the topic.
The students are engaged with identifying the different category of computers and their
features.
I.REVIEW (by teachers and students of familiar materials):
1. What makes a special purpose computer different from a general purpose one?
2. Is your computer general or special purpose?
