NZCH ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE (1)
CONTROL: 120.9 126.1 128.75 TOWER: 118.4 125.0 ATIS: 127.2

Arrival Procedures
ATC Speed Requirements
Approach Control Unless otherwise approved by ATC, arriving aircraft must not
exceed 250kt IAS below 10,000ft within 30NM of Christchurch
International Airport.
Final Approach Unless otherwise approved by ATC, aircraft on final must fly an
instrument approach at not less than 160kt IAS to 5NM from
touchdown. If unable to comply advise ATC with pilot preferred
speed.
Aircraft unable to follow promulgated RNAV STAR procedures will be given radar
vectors or alternative routing by ATC.
ILS/DME or LOC/DME RWY 02 and ILS/DME or LOC/DME RWY 20
Missed approach tracking by non RNAV aircraft requires use of Christchurch VOR and
DME, Ident CH Freq 115.3.
If unavailable non RNAV aircraft are to fly the published missed approach track (DR),
climb to 3000ft, expect radar control.
Visual Approach Procedures
RWY 02/20
IFR aircraft (CAT A, B, C) on a visual approach or visual arrival procedure that are
unable to land are to enter the aerodrome traffic circuit unless otherwise advised by
ATC. If MET conditions prevent entering the circuit, then expect ATC to issue an
instruction to fly the published missed approach for the approach nominated on ATIS.
It is expected that CAT D aircraft will fly a missed approach unless the crew request
otherwise.
RWY 11/29
IFR aircraft on a visual approach or visual arrival procedure that are unable to land
are to enter the aerodrome traffic circuit unless otherwise advised by ATC.
Maximum Speed on Missed Approach
Unless otherwise approved by ATC maximum speed on the missed approach is 185kt
IAS.
Practice Auto-lands
Practice auto-lands to RWY 02 or RWY 20 are available on request to ATC in MET
conditions equal to or better than Category I ILS/DME minima.
Approval from ATC will be subject to traffic and may contain conditions i.e. the LOC
sensitive area is not protected.

(a) Area:
Grass Taxiway D marked by white marker boards on the eastern edge and yellow marker
boards on western edge.
Grass Taxiway C marked by white marker boards on the western edge and yellow marker
boards on eastern edge.
(b) Circuit:
Whenever possible do not extend further north or south than abeam main paved RWY 02/20
thresholds.
(c) Taxiing Procedure:
Aircraft after landing turn towards the Canterbury Aero Club building to vacate the runway
unless otherwise instructed by ATC. That is after landing RWY 02 turn left and after landing

(d) Taking off, on touch-and-go or overshooting:
Because of simultaneous operations on the main RWY 02/20 aircraft taking off, on
touch-and-go or overshooting must not converge towards the main runway. Passing 420ft
AMSL aircraft are to commence a turn to diverge away from the main runway by at least 10°,
then fly a square crosswind. The turn is not required if ATC confirm on departure a
non-standard turn towards the main runway.
(e) Transponder Operation:
VFR aircraft operating in the circuit for Grass RWY 02/20 are to set their transponder to code
2200, unless otherwise directed by ATC.
6. CAUTION: D Bird hazard. Refer to NZCH AD 2.23.
D Jet engine test cell. Refer to NZCH AD 2.23 and page NZCH AD 2-53.1.
7. MET balloons released irregularly. Refer to Table ENR 5.3-7.
8. Aircraft making a touch-and-go, go-around or missed approach off main RWY 02/20, in VMC,
should maintain a track on or east of the RWY centreline due to potential grass runway traffic.
9. Low visibility operations are detailed in Ground Movements (6), (7) & (8).

Low Visibility Operations

The following procedures will apply when observed or reported visibility falls below 1000
metres. These procedures will allow more than one aircraft to operate on the manoeuvring
area at any one time without compromising safety.
Surface movement surveillance is NOT available.
Note: Operations below 800 metres visibility are subject to the availability of a serviceable
secondary power supply and automatic switch-over.
General
When low visibility procedures are in force, this will be indicated on the Christchurch ATIS
broadcast by use of the term “Low Visibility Procedures apply”.
Operations will be restricted to RWY 02 or RWY 20. The designated runway will be advised
on the ATIS and operations from the reciprocal runway will not be approved unless it
complies with ATM requirements and only one aircraft is on the manoeuvring area at any
one time.
Two lit marker boards will be placed on each of the taxiways to/from RWY 02/20 that are
not available for use, depending on which runway is in use.
When traffic levels require, a rescue fire vehicle will be positioned adjacent to TWY A short
of A2 or A7 to indicate the holding position for that runway.
A departing aircraft will not be issued with a take-off clearance until GROUND has
confirmed the preceding arriving aircraft is on the manoeuvring area immediately adjacent
to the apron.

STANDS 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 32, 34 & 35 — SAFEDOCK
DOCKING GUIDANCE SYSTEMS
The Aircraft Nose In Guidance System (NIGS) is installed on stands 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21,
22, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 32, 34 and 35. The system is manually programmed from an
operators panel prior to the aircraft arrival. After a successful self-test, the NIGS is in active
mode and is looking for an aircraft. The chevrons scroll in the display unit. Once the NIGS
captures the incoming aircraft, it provides the pilots with azimuth guidance and closing rate
information to their designated stop positions. When the aircraft reaches the stop position,
the display unit shows STOP with two red blocks.
System operation is as follows:

Check that the correct aircraft type is displayed.

The scrolling arrows indicate that the system is
activated.
Follow the lead in line.
When the solid yellow stopping position indicator
appears, the aircraft has been caught by the the
scanning unit. The scanning unit now checks that
the aircraft is the correct type and the display
provides azimuth guidance information.

Look for the flashing red arrow and solid yellow

arrow which provide azimuth guidance information.
The flashing red arrow shows which direction to
steer, while solid yellow arrow gives an indication
of how far the aircraft is off of the centreline.

When the aircraft is 12m from the stop position,

closing rate information is given. “Distance to
run” is indicated by turning off one row of LED’s
for each one-half metre that the aircraft advances
toward the stop position.
When the correct stop position is reached, all of
the LED’s in the stopping position indicator will be
closed, the word “STOP” appears in the display
and two red rectangular fields will light in the
azimuth guidance area of the display.

VISUAL DOCKING (2)

If the aircraft stops in the correct position, “OK”

will be displayed after a few seconds.
If the aircraft has gone past the correct stop
position, the display will show “TOO FAR”.

The aircraft type must be verified at least 12m

before the correct stop position. If this does not
occur, the system displays “STOP” with two red
rectangular fields being lit in the azimuth guidance
area of the display. While the aircraft is stopped,
the system will attempt to verify it. If successful,
the docking procedure will continue. If an
unverified object is found in the scanning area
during docking, the system will show “WAIT”.
When the object has disappeared, the procedure
will be resumed.
