Types and Uses of Cleaning
1 Materials and Disinfectants

It is important to know how to clean, sanitize, and disinfect dishes, utensils, and other
surfaces that may come in contact with the food being prepared. Part of food safety, cleaning,
sanitizing, disinfecting, and following proper procedures goes a long way toward preventing
foodborne illness.

For dishes or surfaces to be sanitized or disinfected, they must be clean first. This
means removing visible food, crumbs, or dirt from them.

surfaces. It is significant to emphasize their knowledge in the proper cleaning of
utensils and surfaces in the baking laboratory. Give examples to students to
improve their analytic capabilities in maintaining a clean work environment.

Types and Uses of Cleaning Materials / Disinfectant
Cleaning agents are substances used to remove dirt, stains, bad odors, and clutters on
surfaces. The purpose of cleaning agents includes maintaining good health, removing offensive
odor, and avoiding the spread of grime and contaminants to self and other people. The main
purpose is to kill germs and sanitize at the same time.

1. Natural Cleaning Ingredients:

a. Vinegar is a useful cooking ingredient aside from being
a great cleaner. Because it is made from acetic acid, it is
strong enough to dissolve mineral deposits, dust, oil,
grime, and kill bacteria. It is the ultimate multipurpose
cleaning solution because it is non-toxic and environment-
friendly. Although it has a strong odor and doesn’t stain
surfaces, the white vinegar is best used for cleaning. It
can be used to clean stovetops, countertops, and floors.

b. Lemon juice is a good natural cleaner because of its

high citric acidity. Adding lemon juice and vinegar together
removes soap foams. Together with soap, the three can
easily remove the grease from dishes and surfaces away
and into the dishwashing sink. Lemon juice can be used
to dissolve hard water deposits. It is also good at cleaning
and shining brass and copper. Another use for lemon juice
is mixing a half cup to a full cup of olive oil and you’ll be
able to polish hardwood furniture.
c. Baking soda is an amazingly versatile multi-purpose
product and is fondly called “The Everyday Miracle.” It can
remove coffee or tea stains while eliminating the bitter
taste, deodorizes and cleans cutting boards, refrigerators,
freezers, and dishwashers, neutralizes both acid and
basic odors of drains and garbage disposals, and
extinguishes fire. It also cleans dirt and residues of fresh
fruits and vegetables.

 d. Bacteria-free sponges and some muscles are
typically used to clean water-resistant surfaces and are
good at absorbing water and water-based solutions. Soak
sponges on water and bleach for five minutes, rinse and
hang to dry to keep them clean.

e. Borax when mixed with water, it converts to hydrogen

peroxide. Borax is similar to baking soda which disinfects
and kills molds and mildew while it also removes stains. It
softens hard water buildups on many appliances and
facets, making it easy to remove calcium and magnesium.

f. Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant that controls the
growth and spread of mold and mildew. It is ideally used to
soothe insect bites or stings. A few drops can keep an
infected area clean and reduce swelling. This mold fighter
can also purify the air.

g. Other Uses of Disinfectants:

✔ Remove hard grease build up by scrubbing with a
little elbow degreaser using a paste consisting of baking
soda, salt, and water. An option is to mix two tablespoons
of liquid dishwashing soap, two teaspoons of borax onto
two cups of warm water. Apply, let it sit for several
minutes or 20minutes. Then scrub.
