Thermal conductivity measurement using guarded plate apparatus.

AIM

To determine the thermal conductivity of a material by two slabs guarded hot plate method.

APPARATUS REQUIRED

Guarded plate apparatus

SPECIFICATIONS

Material =

Diameter, d = 150 mm

Specimen thickness, ΔL = 10 mm

FORMULA USED

Thermal conductivity, ( )

Area of specimen, ( )

Heat input, Q=V×I (Watts)

Where, Q = heat transfer in Watts

ΔL = thickness in m
A = area of heat transfer in m2
ΔT = temperature difference across the length ΔL in 0C or K

PROCEDURE

1. Connect the three pin plug to 230 V, 50 Hz, 5 Amps power supply socket with dimmer in OFF
position.

2. Turn the dimmer in clockwise direction to supply the power to heaters.

3. Allow the unit to stabilize.

4. Note down the temperature indicated by the digital temperature indicator by turning the thermocouple
selector switch clockwise step by step.

5. Repeat the experiment for different power inputs to the heater.

6. After the experiment is over turn the dimmer knob anti clockwise direction to zero.

RESULT

The thermal conductivity of the given material is ___________ (W m-1 K-1)
