Calculate Kc for the following reaction at temperature 298 K. [2m]

(b) 0.6 mol ethanol, 0.7 mol ethanoic acid, 0.5 mol ethyl ethanoate and 0.3
mol water are mixed together. When chemical equilibrium is established,
0.4 mol of ethanoic acid remains unreacted.

18) (a) For the reversible reaction
NH4+(aq) + OH-(aq)  NH3(aq) + H2O(l)
The units of the rate constant, k1, for the forward reaction are dm3
mol-1 s-1 and the unit of k2 for the backward reaction is s-1. If the
reaction rate is measured in mol dm-3 s-1, deduce the overall order for
the forward and backward reactions. Write the rate equation for the
backward reaction. [3m]

(b) Explain with the aid of suitable diagram(s), why the rate of reaction
doubles with every 10C increase in temperature. [5m]

(c) The table below shows the variation of the rate constant of a reaction
with temperature.

Plot a suitable graph to determine the activation energy, E a, of the

19) (a) Calculate the pH of a buffer solution which contains 0.040 mol of
ammonium chloride and 0.10 mol of ammonia in 1.0 dm 3 solution. [4m]
(Acid dissociation constant, Ka. for NH4+ = 5.5 x 10-10 mol dm-3)

(b) Explain how HCO3- ion can act as a Bronsted Lowry acid and base.
Write equations that are relevant. [4m]

(c) The indicator dissociation constant, KHIn, of an indicator is 2.0 x 10-5 mol
dm-3. The colour of HIn is yellow while the colour of In - is blue. This
indicator is used for the titration between HCl(aq) and NaOH(aq). [2m]

(i) What is the colour of the indicator at the end-point of titration?

(ii) Calculate the pH value at which the indicator changes its colour during
the titration.

(d) A solution is made by mixing 500 cm3 of 2.0 mol dm-3 butanoic acid with
500 cm3 of 0.50 mol dm-3 sodium butanoate. Ka for butanoic acid is 1.50 x
10-5 mol dm-3. Calculate the change in the pH when 100 cm 3 of 0.50 mol
dm-3 HCl is added to 1.0 dm3 of the buffer solution. [5m]

20) (a) Phosphorus pentachloride, PCl5 dissociates according to the
following equation.
PCl5(g)  PCl3(g) + Cl2(g)
A 9.17 g sample of PCl5 is placed in a 5.00 dm3 flask at 220C. If half
of the phosphorus pentachloride dissociates, determine the mole
fraction of PCl5 (g) in the vessel and the total pressure. [6m]

(b) Explain each of the following observations. [9m]


(i) Nitrogen only forms one chloride, NCl3 whereas phosphorus forms
two chlorides, PCl3 and PCl5.
(ii) When ethanoic acid is dissolved in benzene, it is found that the
relative molecular mass of the acid is 120.
(iii) Ammonia molecule is trigonal pyramidal but sulphur trioxide is
trigonal planar.
