Introduction

As a Grade 10 student of the Anna Regina Secondary School, in 2022 I will be sitting the

Caribbean Secondary Examinations, writing both English ‘A’ and ‘B’. As such, a School-Based

Assessment (S.B.A) was required to write these two subjects. The researcher along with his

group members chose the topic of Plastic Surgery. Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty

involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. The main topic was

then broken down into four components or subtopics which he was assigned the ‘Negative Effect

of Plastic Surgery’; it entailed doing extensive research on the negative and side effects that

accompany plastic surgery which included: excessive bleeding, scars, death and much more.

4
PLAN OF INVESTIGATION

The researcher perceives the topic “Plastic Surgery” as captivating, relevant and lively,

being suitable for this SBA and will be zeroing on the “Negative Effects of Plastic Surgery”.

Additionally, the researcher chose this topic because he is in the Science Stream and can pursue

a career in plastic surgery if desirous; finally, plastic surgery is becoming a prevalent trend.

Upon completion, he expects that his vocabulary, public speaking and writing skills be

drastically improved.

He aims to obtain his print artefact from reading online articles and publications, his

visual from YouTube videos and pictures and, audio from YouTube and medical websites.

5
REFLECTION

Prior to selecting the topic “Plastic Surgery”, the researcher’s knowledge on the topic was

sparse, however, that horizon is now unlimited. The print artefact which was an online article

titled “Negative Effects of Plastic Surgery” by Nathawat Duanchay has opened my mind

tremendously to the prevalence and how easily plastic surgery can go down the dark path. It

expounded on complications like excessive bleeding and in worst cases, commas. The audio

artefact from the morning show ‘The Beller Show’ highlighted some of the negative effects of

plastic surgery, for example, asymmetrical body parts, excessive loss of blood and exploding

body parts. The visual artefact which was a production of BBC News provided explicitly vivid

pictures of the effects and background information. Some of the side effects were life-lasting

scars, excessive blood loss, pain and or numbness of the area, also infection. After reading,

watching and listening to the information of the various artefacts, the researcher was filled with

empathy for those who have experienced the effects and sorrow for those who are yet to embark

on plastic surgery.

After carefully analyzing each artefact, it was observed that the language used in all three

artefacts was standard English and was mostly information. The print artefact contained

sentences that were readily understood and were formal. The use of connotative and denotative

diction was rarely utilized. Its tone was one of concern and the mood was one of reflection. The

audio artefact was expository and formal. Firsthand experience of professions in plastic surgery

would have shared their experience(s) to the general public with aid of both denotive and

connotative diction. Imagery and similes were also prevalent in their speeches. The tone that was

emulated was one that lacked emotion meaning, it was just presented and a mood of concern was

6
created. The visual artefact was packed with pictures and a subtitle to accompany. It was both

descriptive and expository, given in a formal tone. Overall, the artefacts divulged the appropriate

content needed for the negative effects of plastic surgery and illuminated the accurate mood and

tone.

In conclusion, this SBA had an exponential impact on the researcher. Before working on

this SBA, the researcher was ignorant on the topic and conducting research on topics was

seldom. Now, the researcher is up-to-date with information on the topic and, doing research has

become an integral habit of his. It has taught him the value of reading and interpreting content.

With the knowledge acquired the researcher is overcome with extreme empathy for the populist

that went through the effects that accompany plastic surgery and wishes them good fortune.

However, the researcher is hopeful that with the advancement of technology, the effects would

be eradicated.

WRITTEN REPORT

Plastic Surgery is now a prevalent trend globally, and we are very eager to be researching

it. We were randomly selected by our English teacher and placed into groups. Our main topic is

‘Plastic Surgery’ and, was broken down into: ‘Its History, Its Influence on the 21 Century. Its
st

Negative Effects and the Procedures Involved’. They were approved and then the Plan of

Investigation and Reflections were completed. The Plan of Investigation and Reflection

demanded in-depth analysis of each artefact as well as an extensive critique of the use of

language.

Out of the 12 artefacts, we chose 3. It was an arduous task to do … to pick the best. We

selected an online article based on plastic surgery named ‘Negative Effects of Plastic Surgery for

the print artefact. It was an informative piece of literature accompanied by a neutral tone. The

visual artefact, a production of BBC News provided explicitly vivid pictures of the effects and

also gave background information. Meanwhile. our audio artefact which was a song by Melanie

Martinez named ‘Mrs. Potato Head’ focused on the influence of plastic surgery on the 21 st

century. They all contributed greatly to our knowledge and overall appreciation for the topic.

This SBA has been an absolute blessing to the students that were involved. First of all,

our main topic ‘Plastic Surgery’ was most captivating. At once our group bonded over the topic’s

selection. It is a famous area of research. As we each did our research, we were all enticed and

astonished at the mountain of information and the new and exhilarating discoveries which were

made. We were all poised with sharing our newfound wealth with our colleagues and our

immediate populist. We relished the satisfaction of having in-depth and accurate knowledge on a

worldwide topic. In everything, there must be challenges. The common norm with group work is

the fear of group members not co-operating or fetching their weight. That however was not a
8
problem for our group. The minor difficulty we faced was identifying the precise and relevant

artefacts.

Oral presentation
Song: Plastic Surgery Ain’t No Good.

You may feel something is missing, girl,

But know that your immaculate, yeah.

There is no need for rushing girls, to do what other girls are doing.

They are blinded by the lie that there is a perfect body,

But don’t let your self-esteem drop because of that one ad you saw on TV…

So baby, throw out the thoughts that you need it through out the door.

You may be pressured but you don’t need it, no you don’t.

Those doctors don’t care but I do though,

Let me show the real truth, baby

Plastic Surgery ain’t no good.

Oooh, baby baby please, please, please, please now girl

Plastic Surgery ain’t no good

Ooh baby baby please, please, please please know girl…

People would say many things girl, but I hope you keep your head on.

Don’t be afraid to show it all, because you value yourself more.

Hope you know that is okay to have insecurities.

They define who you are unlike bleeding and scars you might receive, from surgery
