Computer/Digital Arts
1 (Technology-Based Arts)
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
the nature of Technology-based Arts. The scope of this module permits it to be used in
many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary
level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.

b. early 1940’s
c. early 1950’s
d. early 1960’s
5. The following media can be considered computer/digital arts, except one.
a. computer generated images
b. digital photography
c. mobile phone
d. paint brush
6. It is an Ipad application that enables you to “doodle” on images.
a. doodle booth
b. flipagram
c. instagram
d. snapseed
7. Which of the following applications for android phones allows you to make a collage?
a. doodle booth
b. flipagram
C. photogrid
d. pixlr
8. It is a kind of art that make use of electronic and mechanical devices, rather than the
artist’s own hand.
a. computer/digital art
b. computer graphics

d. visual art
WHAT’S IN
What’s New
Digital Arts Defined
Digital Arts describe technological arts, with fluid boundaries offering many possible
interpretations of the terminology. As such, we now prefer the terms digital art and
new media which can be used interchangeably with some nuances. In other words,
while some works rely on digital tools to magnify an alreadyexisting medium, others
use as digital technology as an intrinsic and indissociable component in the making
of the artifact.
What is It
Today’s computer artists employ the ever-expanding powers of image
manipulation programs and applications to create an amazing artwork
which can appear in an entire range of media whether as a physical
output or a virtual experience.
Computer/digital arts make use of electronic and mechanical devices, rather than
the artist’s own hand, to produce the desired images and effects. Thus, these are
definitely technology-based art forms.
In recent decades, personal gadgets such as laptops, tablets, and android phones
have incorporated the artistic capabilities of the large-scale computers. So it is now
possible for anyone to be a digital artist.
Mobile phones can store personal photographs and videos that you can manipulate with
a myriad of special effects, both visual and auditory.
They could also be school projects or reports that require you to combine images,
incorporate text, and even include simple animation.
The tasks that traditional photo editors used to perform manually – cropping,
retouching, airbrushing are now just a few of the many editing effects done for you with
split-second ease at the click of the mouse, a keyboard command, or a few taps and
drags of your finger on a touch screen.
What’s More
Balance
Balance in art refers to the use artistic elements such as line, texture, color, and form
in the creation of artworks in a way that renders visual stability. In general terms,
balance refers to the equilibrium of different elements. However, in art and design,
balance does not necessarily imply a complete visual or even physical equilibrium of
forms around a center of the composition, but rather an arrangement of forms that
evokes the sense of balance in viewers. Balance is important as it brings visual
harmony, rhythm and coherence to artwork, and it confirms its completeness.
There are few types of balance, and they are as follows:
Symmetry – a form of balance achieved by the use of identical balance
compositional units on either side of a vertical axis within the picture plane.
Approximate Symmetry - a form of balance achieved by the use of similarly
balanced compositional units on either side of a vertical axis within the picture
plane.
Radial Symmetry – a form of balance that is even, radiating out from a central point to
all four quadrants of the shape’s constraining plane.
Asymmetry – a form of balance attained when the visual units on balance either side of
the vertical axis are not identical, but are placed in positions within the picture plane.
Emphasis
Emphasis is a principle of arts which refers to the use of visual elements to draw
attention to a certain area, usually a focal point, in an artwork. There are many ways
you could go about using emphasis in your art. Usually, it involves contrasting
different elements against each other. For example, a bright red object will stand out
among dull gray background or a straight line among curve lines, or a round object
among circular objects.
Proportion
Proportion is the comparison of dimensions or distribution of forms. It is the
relationship in scale between one element and another, or between a whole object
and one of its parts. Differing proportions with a composition can relate to different
kinds of balance or symmetry, and can help establish visual weight and depth.
Variety
Variety is the compliment to unity and harmony, and is needed to create visual interest.
Without unity and harmony, an image is chaotic and “unreadable”, without variety it is dull
and uninteresting. Good design is achieved through the balance of unity and variety; the
elements need to be alike enough so we perceive them as a belonging together and
different enough to be interesting.
Movement
Movement is the path our eyes follow when we look at a work of art, and is generally
very important to keep a viewer’s eyes engaged in the work. Without movement
artwork becomes stagnant. A few good strategies to evoke a sense of movement
(among many others) are using diagonal lines, placing shapes so that they extend
beyond the boundaries of the picture plane, and using changing values.
What I Have Learned
1. _____________________ is computer generated or manipulated visual arts.
2. Computer/digital arts first came on the scene in the early __________.
3. Computer/digital art is a _________________________________.
4. The evolution of mobile phones connotes the development of ___________.
5. The word “________________” came from the word phones and tablets.
6. Editing pictures in an android phone can be done online and __________.
7. Example of computer/digital arts are:

14. __________________ allows you to “bring photos to life”.
15. An _______________operating system used in most of the mobile phones.
What I Can Do
With the use of any android or smart phones, take a picture of anything related to
nature, people or any subject as you wish. Apply any of the editing tools found in your
camera phone settings (eg. crop, filter, adjust sharpness/brightness, doodle, stickers).
Paste your output on another sheet of paper.
Using any of the applications installed in your available device(s), experiment with
different effects and features to modify your saved images or illustrations. Make a
presentation of your pictures and apply background music. Share your output to your
teacher through “Bluetooth” or “Share It” application.

Multiple Choice:
Direction: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a separate sheet
of paper.
1. It is known as the computer-generated and or manipulated form of art.
a. computer art c. technology-based art

5. Culture Paint
6. Student Rotate
8. Building Label/Text
There are lots of editing application softwares available online where you can freely
download. Also, our android phones are installed with a default application ready for editing
pictures. You just need to familiarize the settings of your android phones. Edit, filter, splash,
blur, are just some of the common and basic editing processes you can explore. The editing
processes the boundaries of the phone to create graphic illustrations and designs. Look at
