A cartridge consists of 4 main parts: the bullet, cartridge case, gunpowder, and primer. It is a self-contained round of ammunition that can be fired from a firearm. Cartridges are classified based on factors like caliber, casing material, and intended use. Shotguns also use ammunition consisting of shot, wads, and sometimes slugs to propel multiple projectiles or a single lead projectile through the barrel.

TECHNICAL DEFINITION:

In its technical term, AMMUNITION may refer to

A GROUP OR CARTRIDGES or to a SINGLE UNIT or
SINGLE CARTRIDGES, which means a complete unit
consisting of
• BULLET
• PRIMER
• CARTRIDGES CASE
• GUNPOWDER
ETIOMOLOGY

The term “CARTRIDGE” originated from sixteenth

century. It is also called small arms ammunition consisting
of a pre-measured charge of powder wrapped in paper.

The term, “CARTRIDGE” is derived from the French

word “CARTOUCHE”.

PARTS OF CARTRIDGE:
Generally speaking, a cartridge is a complete round
ammunition for firearm. However, technically, a cartridge
has only four parts:

1. BULLET – the projectile propelled through the barrel of

fire arm by means of the expansive force of glass coming
from burning gunpowder. Otherwise known as
PROJECTILE.

2. CARTRIDGE CASE – the tubular metallic container for the

gunpowder/ Sometimes called SHELL or CASING.

3. GUNPOWDER– the powder charge which, when ignited

by the primer flash, is converted to a heated gas under high
pressure and propels the bullet of shot charges the barrel
and unto the target.

4. PRIMER - the chemical compound or priming mixture

contained in the primer cup. Very susceptible to friction

THE SHOTGUN SHELL

PARTS OF SHUTGUN SHELLS:

Shot
Multiple projectiles fired through a shotgun barrel. Shot size is
adaptable to the game being hunted. As pellet diameter decreases,
more shot can be placed in a standard shot shell load. The smaller
the shot number, the larger the shot size.
Slug
A lead projectile fired through a shotgun barrel. Slugs are used for
hunting big game with a shotgun.
Wad
The wad, made of paper or plastic, separates the powder charge
from the shot or slug. This seal prevents gas from escaping through
the shot. The wad used in modern shotgun ammunition has a
plastic cup attached. This cup holds the shot together as it passes
through the barrel.
