BOYLE’S LAW
Activity 1. Pressure-Volume Relationship at Constant Temperature
Objective: At the end of the activity, students must be able to explain the
relationship between volume and pressure of gases at constant temperature
using illustration and a graph.
What you need:

 Boyle’s Law illustration, Graphing paper Paper and pen


What to do:
a. Study the illustration of the gases below which is confined in the jar.

b. Plot the points of pressure vs. volume in the graph below. Let volume
in the x-axis and pressure in the y-axis.
c. Answer the guide questions that follow. Write your answers on a
separate sheet of paper.

Guide Questions:
1. What is constant in Boyle’s law?
Answer: Temperature
2. What happened to the pressure and volume of the gas as the cover of
the jar is pushed down?
Answer: The pressure increased and the volume decreased.
3. Using the graph, what is the relationship of pressure and volume given
that the temperature is constant?
Answer: There is an inverse relationship between pressure and volume at
constant temperature.

Activity 2. Problem Solving


Objective: At the end of the activity, students must be able to apply Boyle’s law
in a mathematical calculation.
What you need: Paper, pen, and calculator
What to do:
a. Read and understand the situation below.
The inflated balloon that slipped from the hand of Renn has a volume of
0.50 L at sea level (1.0 atm) and it reached a height of approximately 8 km
where the atmospheric pressure is approximately 0.33 atm. Assume that the
temperature is constant, compute for the final volume of the balloon by
answering the guide questions. b. Use the situation above to answer guide
questions. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
Guide Questions:
1. What are the given quantities in the situation? P1 =1.0atm P2 =0.33 atm

2. Given that the temperature is constant, what is the final volume of the
balloon? Show your complete solution.

Activity 1. Charles’ Law in Action
Objective: 1. Describe the relationship between volume and temperature at
constant pressure of gas.

What you need:


2 small basins, 3 toy balloons, Warm water, Cold water

What to do:
1. Blow the balloons to approximately same size.
2. Label the balloons A, B, and C respectively.
3. Fill the first basin with warm water while the second basin with cold water.
4. Immerse balloon A to basin with warm water while balloon B to a basin with
cold water. Leave the balloon C untouched.
5. Observe the balloons after 3 minutes. Which of the balloons did expand?
Which of the balloons shrunk?

1. What is the relationship between volume and temperature when pressure is
Constant?

Answer:
The volume of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature when
pressure is constant. The ratio of volume to temperature is constant when
pressure is constant.

2. Can you enumerate familiar events you observe in your community and
household which are related with the volume-temperature relationship in
gases?
Answer:
Tires of untouched vehicles get deflated during freezing winter days while
get inflated in hot summer days. In winter due to low temperatures, the
air inside a tire gets cooler, and they shrink. While in hot days, the air
expands with temperature.

Activity 2. Charles’ Law


Objectives:
1. Describe the relationship between volume and temperature at a constant
pressure of gas;
2. Solve problems involving Charles’ Law.

What you need: Paper and pen

What to do: Now, work on this activity to help you understand better Charles’
Law.

1. What happens when a 450 mL sample of a gas kept at constant pressure


is cooled from 60℃ to 20 ℃ ?

2. Three liters of hydrogen at -20 ℃ are allowed to warm to a room


temperature of 27 ℃ . What is the Volume at room temperature if the pressure
remains constant?
