    Fluid volume excess (FVE) occurs when fluid intake or retention is greater than the body's needs. Contributing factors include kidney failure, heart failure, cirrhosis, and corticosteroid therapy. Manifestations of FVE include cough, dyspnea, crackles, increased blood pressure, tachypnea, tachcardia, weight gain, jugular vein distention, and pitting edema. Diagnostic procedures include checking electrolytes, BUN, creatinine, hematocrit from serum and specific gravity and osmolarity from urine. Chest x-rays may also be done if respiratory complications are present.
