C. Lesson Proper
Multiplying decimals is just like multiplying whole numbers. Place the decimal point after
in the product. The number of decimal places in the product must be the same as the total
number of decimal places in the factors.
Example: Find the product of:
a. 8.46 x 5
b. 23.85 x 3.5
c. 2.3 x 6.5 x 8.2
2 3
Solution: a. 8.46 2 decimal places
x 5 0 decimal place
42. 30 2 decimal places + 0 decimal place = 2 decimal places
Therefore, the product is 42.30.
121
142
b. 23.85 2 decimal places
x 3.5 1 decimal place
11925
+ 7155
83.475 2 decimal places + 1 decimal place = 3 decimal places
Therefore, the product is 83.475.
c. 2.3 x 6.5 x 8.2
Step 1:
1
1
2.3 1 decimal place
x 6.5 1 decimal place
115
+ 138
14.95 2 decimal places
Step 2:
374
11
14.95 2 decimal places
x 8.2 1 decimal place
2 990
+ 119 60
122.590 3 decimal places
Therefore, the product is 122.590.
Multiplication of Decimals by Powers of 10
A faster way of multiplying a decimal by 10, 100, 1000, and so on is to move the
decimal point one, two, or three, … places to the right.
Example 2: Find the product of the following.
a. 3.76 x 10
b. 89. 796 x 100
c. 3. 657 x 1000
d. 6.95 x 10000
3. 3. 24 x 0.46 = 14904
4. 6.4 x 1.005 = 6432
5. 0.6 x 0.8 x 1.5 = 72
6. 346 x 2.5 = 865
Okay, will done pupils.
