A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Statistics and Probability

This lesson plan aims to teach students about coefficient of variation, coefficient of skewness, and measure of kurtosis. It includes objectives, subject matter from statistics textbooks, materials needed, and a procedure involving review, activities, analysis, abstraction of key concepts, and sample problems. Formulas and examples are provided to define and calculate the three statistical measures.

A Semi- Detailed Lesson Plan

In Statistics and Probability

I. Objectives
At the end of the class discussion, the students are expected to:
1. Define coefficient of variation, coefficient of skewness, and measure of kurtosis;
2. participate actively during class discussions;
3. solve problems involving coefficient of variation, coefficient of skewness, and
measure of kurtosis
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Coefficient of Variation, Coefficient of Skewness and Measure of Kurtosis
Reference: MSA Statistics sand Probability pages 51-54
Materials: Visual Aids, Hand-outs, Activity Notebook
Values: Accuracy
Time Frame: 3 hours
III. Procedure
A. Daily Routine
 Opening Prayer
 Greetings
 Classroom Management
B. Review
Measure of Variation
C. Activity
In your own words, differentiate the three different curves according to your
observations.

A B C

D. Analysis
What have you observed in the curves?
What do you think are there differences?
What do you think are the significances of these curves to Statistics?
The students will deliver their answer by calling them randomly.
E. Abstraction
1. Coefficient of Variation - A statistic that allows us to compare two different
data sets that have different units of measurements. This expresses the
standard deviation as a percentage of the mean.

S
For samples: CV= x 100%
X
σ
For population: CV= X 100%
μ
The data with larger CV is more variable.

2. Coefficient of Skewness
Pearson Coefficient of Skewness
- A measure to determine the skewness of a distribution

3(X −Md )
SK =
s

Where x= mean, Md=median, s=standard deviation

3. Measure of Kurtosis
 Leptokurtic curves – more peaked
 Mesokurtic curves – normal
 Platykurtic curves – flat-topped curves

The formulas to compute the measure of kurtosis are

∑( x−x )4
For ungrouped data set: K= 4
ns

∑f .( Xm−x )4
For grouped data set: K= 4
ns

n – number of data in a sample s – sample standard deviation

A distribution is said to be mesokurtic if K=3

leptokurtic if K > 3
platykurtic if K < 3

F. Application
1. Find the coefficient of variation
The average age score of the students in one Statistics class is 110, with
a standard deviation of 5; the average score of students in a Calculus
class is 106, with a standard deviation of 4. Which class is more variable
in terms of score?
2. Compute the coefficient of skewness.
Mean=42, Median = 45, standard deviation = 4
3. Calculate the measure of kurtosis.
The mean X=113 and the standard deviation s=9.07

Class Limits f Xm f.Xm Xm- x (Xm−x )4

f .( Xm−x)4
90-98 6
99-107 22
108-116 43

IV. Agreement/Assignment
