LAB GROWN DIAMONDS

Lab Grown Diamonds is relatively a

new term in the world of diamonds.
Usually, diamonds are something
which is associated with high price and
is symbol of status. People view
diamonds as a symbol of love too. In
today’s world everyone wants to gift
diamonds to their loved ones but
budget is an issue. Here, lab grown diamonds come into the picture.
They are diamonds with exact look and feel of natural diamonds but
relatively at much cheaper price. They also take care of the
environment as they solve the issue of mining and deteriorating earth’s
land.

WHAT IS LAB GROWN DIAMOND?

Lab Grown Diamonds also known as ‘Synthetic diamonds’ are man-

made diamonds made from seeds of diamonds place under exact
conditions as a natural diamond and created without harming the
environment. They are placed in test tubes from seeds and later on
placed under some temperatures and filled with chemicals. They turn
out to be exact like natural diamonds with perfect cut and quality. They
are grown in labs in which exact same conditions are created as earth’s
crust where natural diamonds grow. They contain the same substances
as carbon and other chemicals as a natural diamond.

WHAT ARE THE TWO METHODS TO GROW LAB GROW DIAMONDS?

PROCESS TO CREATE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS

There are two processes to grow lab grown synthetic diamonds –

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure High
Temperature (HPHT).

HOW DOES CVD PROCESS WORKS?

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamonds are created by a process of

placing a very small diamond seed in a chamber. This chamber is then
filled with all those gases which are required to grow it. Then the gases
are heated until the right temperature is acquired. After this layers of
carbon begin to form on that seed which results into the growth of the
diamond seed. It leads to creation of a square-shaped crystal diamond.

A thin layer of natural

diamond is taken as the seed.
The diamond seed is placed
in the CVD plasma sector.

The same environment is re-

created in the CVD reactor.
Carbon disintegrates to form
layers on the diamond seed.

This results in a rough diamond,

same as a mined one.
The cutting and polishing
process is the same for both.

CVD diamond is a Type IIa

diamond; the purest type.
It is 100% carbon composed
with better shine and luster.
HOW DOES HPHT PROCESS WORKS?

High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) Diamonds are created by a

process where exact process of creating natural diamonds is replicated
but in a lab. In this method large
graphite in placed under a machine
which exerts extreme pressure and
crushes the graphite. These
conditions turn graphite into a
diamond. You cannot spot difference
between CVD diamond and HPHT
diamond with a naked eye. Both of
these methods create a diamond
which physically looks like a natural
diamond and has the same chemical composition.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURAL DIAMOND & LAB GROWN DIAMOND

LAB GROWN DIAMONDS VS NATURAL DIAMOND

When you talk about differences between a lab grown diamond and a
natural diamond, they can’t be viewed with a naked eye. The main
difference between lab grown diamonds and natural diamond is lab
grown diamonds do not contain nitrogen whereas when in natural
diamonds we can find small traces of nitrogen. Although natural
diamonds are created through a process which takes millions of years.
As a result of this, they have a very high demand as people follow the
demand supply rule which states goods which have a high demand
have a less supply. Lab grown diamonds also provide you with same
look and composition as natural diamond but relatively in lesser
periods of time without harming the environment. There is no
difference in color, clarity or cut of any high grade lab grown diamond
and a natural diamond. Any synthetic diamond grown under the right
pressure and conditions can give you the exact same color as a natural
diamond and a perfect cut.
WHY BUY A LAB GROWN DIAMOND?

The main benefit it saves you tons of money. They are 50% cheaper
than the natural diamonds. Along with saving your money you can save
the environment too by eliminating the mining and ruining the earth’s
surface. They are available in all colors as a natural diamond. As you
know colorless diamonds are rare and priced highly, but you can buy a
colorless lab grown diamond at a less price. They are sustainable too.
They have durability as they compose carbon which is one of the
hardest materials on earth. Lab grown diamonds are graded like natural
diamonds on the basis of 4C’S-cut,clarity,carat and color and the
difference between natural and lab grown diamonds on the basis of
4C’s is nil. It stays same forever. So, lab grown diamond is a real
diamond.
LAB GROWN DIAMOND MARKET

The global production of lab grown diamonds is 6-7 million carats out of
which India is producing 1.5 million carats, which makes it a major hub.
Some of the other leading producers of lab grown diamonds are China,
United States, Russia, and United Kingdom. India is a home to number
of lab grown diamond brands.
