Constellation Canis Major

The Greater Dog, CANIS MAJOR, and in particular the brilliant star Sirius, were
frequently mentioned in early Egyptian mythology. It was associated with the
goddess Isis, the cow-goddess Hathor, and the jackal-headed god Anubis at
various eras in Egyptian history. The Egyptians held Sirius in high regard
because its reappearance in mid-July, after a several-month hiatus,
corresponded with the yearly flooding of the Nile, an event critical to the land's
productivity. Sirius was also known as the "Dog Star," symbolizing the hottest
days of summer, which were referred to as "Dog Days" in the past.
CANIS MAJOR was the bigger of the two dogs belonging to the renowned hunter
Orion in Greek mythology. The dog appears to be jumping after Lepus the Hare,
and Zeus praised him and placed him in the skies because of his remarkable
speed.
Activity 3
Apparent Movement of the Stars through the Night
Guide Questions:
Q1. Compare the position of the stars in the sky. What do you notice?
Constellations are formed by the positions of the stars. The stars that
make up the constellation are not all the same distance apart.
Q2. Are the stars stationary at their position at different times of the year?
Although the stars appear to move in the sky, they are actually
stationary. The Earth moves further along its orbit each day, revealing a
new section of the night sky. The pattern will stay the same yet appear
to migrate across the sky as the stars appear seasonally.
Q3. How do stars move?
Each star revolves around its galaxy's center, with a tiny random motion
added on top of that. Each star seems unconcerned, stumbling around
aimlessly like an alcoholic. Rather, each star follows a smooth, virtually
straight path controlled by its own motion and the gravitational field in
the area.
Q4. How is the motion of stars similar to the motion of the Sun?
When you watch the sunrise from east to west (during the day), you'll
notice that the stars appear to move from east to west as well (when
night).

Reflection:
1. I learned that Constellations are beneficial because they may aid in the identification
of stars in the sky. The stars and places might be much easier to find if you seek for
patterns. In ancient times, the constellations served a purpose. They were used to keep
track of the events on the calendar.
2. I enjoyed most on knowing the stars in the Milky Way Galaxy.
3. I want to learn more on the zodiac constellations.
