1. General
A. The tank units referred to in this manual are component parts of the Airbus A320 Fuel Quantity
Indication System (FQIS). The tank units are DC capacitance types whose capacitance change in
proportion to the fuel level in the tank. The FQIS computer measures the capacitance of groups of
tank units to calculate the quantity of fuel in each tank.
2. Description
A. Each tank unit has a pair of coaxial electrodes made from aluminium tubes isolated from each other
at a constant distance by insulated centralising pins, refer to Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. The electrical
connections to the tank unit is made through 'Faston' connector tabs on a block assembly. The slots
in the block assembly prevent incorrect connection of the cable assembly connectors.
B. The tank units (1B-1 and 1B-1A) have the inner tube divided into two sections. The lower section is
called the compensator. The capacitance of the compensator lets the permittivity
(K value) of the fuel to be computed. The compensator incorporates a separate block assembly for
the diodes and electrical connections.
C. The tank units (1A-1B and 1-1H) are capable of measuring the fuel temperature. The rectifier diodes
in these units are specially selected for their temperature properties. The diodes receive a constant
current to measure the temperature. The voltage drop across the diodes is proportional to the
temperature.
D. There are two types of fixings used to install the tank units in the fuel tanks. One type is a ring
assembly and a D-shaped plastic bracket. The ring assembly is a rubber sleeve, the outer diameter
of which has a curved profile. The ring assembly is at the top end of the unit. The plastic bracket is at
the bottom end of the unit. This allows installation in areas that are not easily accessible, such as the
collector cells and the centre tank. The tank units (1A-1); (1A-1A); (1B-1A); (1A-1B); (1A-1C) and
(1A-1D), have this type of fixing.
E. The other type of fixing has two P-shaped brackets. The bracket at the bottom end of the unit is
installed by rivets. The bracket at the top end of the unit is adjustable. The adjustable bracket is
rotated as required to align with the mounting in the tank. The tank units (1-1 through 1-1G), (1-1H
and 1-1J) have this type of fixing.
3. Operation
A. A sine wave 'drive' voltage energises the unit and a diode network in the terminal block half-wave
rectifies the output to give a DC current signal proportional to the capacitance value of the tank unit.

2. Test Conditions
NOTE: Check the accuracy of the test equipment. Tolerances given in TESTING AND FAULT
ISOLATION are specification values.
A. General
(1) Unless otherwise specified, do all the tests to the ambient conditions below:
(c) The barometric pressure must be between 24.95 and 31.01 inHg (845 and 1050 mb).
3. Procedure
A. Do the tests that follow to make sure that the tank unit (1-1) is serviceable.
WARNING: USE CARE WHILE YOU DO THE INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST. THE
INSULATION RESISTANCE TESTER OUTPUT MUST BE SET TO 0 V DC BEFORE
YOU CONNECT THE TANK UNIT (1-1) TO THE TEST EQUIPMENT. A DANGEROUS
SHOCK CAN OCCUR ON THE TANK UNIT (1-1) OR ITS CONNECTORS BECAUSE
OF HIGH VOLTAGES.
(2) Connect the insulation resistance tester between the block assembly connector tab E (blue)
and the inner tube.
(3) Gradually increase the insulation resistance tester output voltage to 500 V DC and measure
the insulation resistance for a period not less than 10 s. Make sure that the measured
insulation resistance is not less than 20 Mohm.
(a) Do the steps (1) thru (3), but connect the insulation resistance tester between the block
assembly connector tab E (blue) and the compensator (part of the inner tube) at step (2).
(5) Gradually decrease the insulation resistance tester output voltage to 0 V DC and set the
insulation resistance tester to off. Disconnect and remove the tank unit (1-1) from the
insulation resistance tester.
NOTE: Reverse the polarities given in steps C.(1) and C.(2) if an ohmmeter other than AVO 8 MK
III is used in the test.
(1) Touch the ohmmeter, AVO 8 MK III, leads to the points that follow and measure the resistance
of the block assembly diodes. The ohmmeter, AVO 8 MK III, must show a resistance of
between 2000 and 6000 ohm:
- The ohmmeter, AVO 8 MK III, positive lead to the connector tab B (Yellow)
- The ohmmeter, AVO 8 MK III, negative lead to the connector tab D (Green).

(a) Do the step (1), but touch the ohmmeter, AVO 8 MK III, leads to the points that follow:
- The ohmmeter, AVO 8 MK III, positive lead to the connector tab C (Yellow)
- The ohmmeter, AVO 8 MK III, negative lead to the connector tab A (Orange).
CAUTION: DO NOT USE THE CABLES TO PULL THE FASTON CONNECTORS FROM THE
BLOCK ASSEMBLY. THE FASTON CONNECTORS HAVE A SELF LOCKING
MECHANISM. THE CONNECTORS CAN BE DAMAGED IF YOU PULL THEM BY
THE CABLES.
NOTE: The tank unit (1-1) must be clean and dry. The tank unit must remain at an ambient
temperature of between 50 and 86 °F (10 and 30 °C) for a minimum period of 30 minutes
before you start the test.
(1) Preparation
(a) Put the tank unit (1-1) on the wooden vee blocks. Put an end plate, 6030LMT, at a
distance of 0.250 in (6,35 mm) away from each end of the unit. Use a bonding wire and
connect the end plates, 6030LMT, to the earth.
(1) Move the end plate, 6030LMT, away from the compensator end of the unit.
(2) Use a bonding wire and connect the compensator (part of the inner tube) to earth.
(c) Connect the tank unit (1-1) to the test set-up: refer to Fig. 101.
(2) Procedure
(a) Set the signal generator to on and energize the test circuit for 15 minutes.
(b) Set the signal generator frequency to between 28.5 and 31.5 kHz. Record the frequency
indication on the frequency counter.
(c) Calculate the Peak Voltage (Vp) to be applied to the tank unit (1-1) during the test from
the formula given below:
Vp 883.5 (0.43 f )
f
Where f is the actual frequency in kHz recorded at step (b).
(d) Set the signal generator peak voltage (Vp) to the value calculated at step (c). Make sure
that the micro ammeter shows the output current given in Table 101.
NOTE: The signal generator output measured by the true RMS DMM, 8506, must be
converted to V RMS with the formula, V RMS = 0.707 Vp. This condition must be
maintained throughout the test.

(3) Put the test liquid, Material Ref. Item 1, of known permittivity, k in the container until the depth
of test liquid, Material Ref. Item 1, is more than the height of the compensator. Put the
compensator fully into the test liquid, Material Ref. Item 1. Make sure that the end plate,
6030LMT, is at a distance of 0.250 in (6,35 mm) from the compensator end of the tank
unit (1-1).
(4) Record the current shown on the micro ammeter. Calculate the corrected current from the
measured current as follows:
1.1
Corrected current (µA) = Measured current x (μA)
k 1
Where k is the known permittivity of the test liquid, Material Ref. Item 1.
(5) Record the corrected current. If the corrected current is between 49.94 and 50.18 µA, continue
to step (11). Continue to step (6) if the corrected current is incorrect.
(6) Remove the tank unit from the test liquid, Material Ref. Item 1. Drain the tank unit and air dry.
When the current shown on the micro ammeter is between 24.15 and 24.19 µA, continue to
step (7).
(7) Subtract the corrected current recorded in step (5) from 50.06 µA. Divide the result by two.
Add this result to 24.17 µA. Record the last result.
NOTE: Subtract the result from 24.17 µA if you get a negative value when corrected current
value is subtracted from 50.06 µA and divided by two.
(8) Remove the end plate, 6030LMT. Use the allen key and set the current shown on the micro
ammeter to the value recorded at step (7).
(9) Put the end plate, 6030LMT, at a distance of 0.250 in (6,35 mm) from the compensator end of
the unit. Use a bonding wire to connect the end plate, 6030LMT, to earth. Make sure that the
current shown on the micro ammeter is the value recorded at step (7). If necessary, adjust the
current until the micro ammeter shows the correct value with the end plate, 6030LMT,
installed.
NOTE: Remove the end plate, 6030LMT, to turn the allen key, but install the end plate,
6030LMT, again and make sure that the bonding wire is connected before you
measure the output current.
(10) Do the procedures given in step (2) thru (5) again. Make sure that the corrected current is
between 49.94 and 50.18 µA. Record the value.
(11) Remove the tank unit (1-1) from the test liquid, Material Ref. Item 1. Drain the tank unit and air
dry.
