PROJECT PROPOSAL
II. RATIONALE
The Department of Education (DepEd), under its core value, Makalikasan, supports
the national government’s efforts in protecting and conserving the environment. The DepEd has
two programs that work side-by-side to be implemented in school namely the Gulayan sa
Paaralan Program (GPP) and the School Inside a Garden (SIGA).
The SIGA Program focuses primarily on establishing schools inside gardens featuring
mostly indigenous and endemic trees and flowering plants, making campuses green and colorful.
Young people nowadays have lost a valuable relationship with nature. The
opportunity to interact and engage with Mother Nature becomes less and less available not to
mention children becoming more of a technological person than an environmental enthusiast.
Often we can see children holding a trowel to till the soil in the garden because most their time
are spent in front of their gadgets. Gardening is the study of life. The simple act of caring for
living soil and plants gives children a foundation for understanding the principles of birth,
growth, maturity, death, competition, cooperation and many other lessons that transfer to
human lives. Learners who garden get a close-up look at natural processes and the living
organisms that thrive in these environments. By learning to care for a living, breathing
ecosystem, children develop an understanding of nature’s importance in their lives and the lives
of other beings.
Plants are living organisms that play an important role in our lives. They belong to
the Kingdom Plantae as per Science. The study of plants and characteristics is known as Botany.
Plants and trees are very important in our lives. Directly or indirectly, plants are connected with
our lives and we both are interdependent on each other. Plants provide us various fruits,
vegetables, oxygen, etc. We help them with carbon dioxide. Plants help in maintaining the
ecosystem. Growing a plant is not so easy. It needs a lot of care for plant to grow into a huge
tree or a fully grown plant.
Placido L. Señor National High School through the efforts of the School in a Garden
and Gulayan sa Paaralan Program Committees have been helping in the government’s advocacy
on environmental friendly activities which part of their Greening Program by planting herbal and
medicinal plants. We urgently need to help young people to learn about the fascinating world of
herbal plants, botanical plants, endemic trees and indigenous plants. The joy seeing them grow
and using them especially here in our school.
As our lifestyle is now getting techno-savvy, we are moving away from nature. We
cannot escape from nature because we are part of nature. Gardens are more than just another
green space. They are hands-on outdoor classrooms that teach children self-regulation and
mindfulness which have been shown to decrease anxiety and depression.
