II. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to;

1. Classify languages, tribes, rituals, practices and dances into universal sets;
2. Illustrate universal set using Venn diagram.

III. ROUTINARY PROCEDURES:

Prayer
Greetings
Setting
Checking of Attendance
Review of previous lesson
Motivational activity
IV. LESSON PROPER/METHODOLOGY:

A. ACTIVITY :

Identify each word from the box and group them into set.

Panaga, Manobo, Pangayam, Limas,Talaandig, Buwa-buwa, Pangapog, Kokat,

Banwaon, Binaylan, Dugso, Pamayas, Binanog, Panikop, Uyagdok, Sugodon, Panulo,
Inamo,

A set of practices in Fishing: Set A = { __________________________________ }

A set of IP Dances: Set B = {________________________________________}

A set of IP Languages in San Luis: Set C: { ______________________________}

A set of IP Rituals: Set D = { __________________________________________}

2. Write the elements of Set A, Set B, Set C and Set D denoted by symbol U.

B. DISCUSSION:

Guides questions for discussion:

Did you find it easy or difficult to group IP languages, rituals, dances and
practices into set? What makes it easy or difficult?
How about when you list all the sets into one denoted by symbol U?

C. INPUT:

WHAT IS UNIVERSAL SET?

A universal set is a set which contains all the elements or objects of other
set, including its own elements. It is usually denoted by the symbol ‘U’.

Example 1:
Set A = { Manobo, Talaandig, Banwaon }
Set B = { Pangapog, Pamayas, Uyagdok, Sugodon }
Set C: { Limas, Panikop,Panulo, Panaga }

Find the universal set for all the three sets A, B and C ?

By the definition we know, that universal set includes all the elements of the
given sets. Therefore, Universal Set for sets A,B and C will be,

Answer:
Universal set U= { Manobo, Talaandig, Banwaon, Pangapog, Pamayas,
Uyagdok, Sugodon, Limas, Panikop,Panulo, Panaga }

Example 2: Let’s say, there are three sets named as A, B and C.

The elements of all sets A, B and C is defined as;

Set A = {1,3,6,8} Set B={2,3,4,5} Set C={5,8,9}

Find the universal set for all the three sets A, B and C?
Answer: Universal set U= {1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9}

Explanation:
1. From the above example, you can see that the elements of sets A, B and C
are altogether available in Universal set ‘U’.

2. Also, if you observe, no elements in the universal set are repeated and
all the elements are unique.

Please take note (same example above): If Universal set contains Sets A, B and C,

Set A = {1,3,6,8} Set B={2,3,4,5} Set C={5,8,9}

then Universal set U = {1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9}

These sets (Set A, Set B, Set C) are also called Subsets of Universal set,
denoted by:
(A subset of U) A ⊂ U, that is Set A is part of Universal set U
(B subset of U) B ⊂ U, that is Set B is part of Universal Set U
(C subset of U) C ⊂ U, that is Set C is part of Universal Set U

ILLUSTRATION OF UNIVERSAL SET USING VENN DIAGRAM of Sets A, B and C

Set A = {1,3,6,8} Set B={2,3,4,5} Set C={5,8,9}

Universal set U = {1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9}

U

VENN DIAGRAM representation of the Universal Set:

Example1 : U= { Poblacion, Muritula, Balit, Binicalan }

consisting of Set A={Poblacion, Muritula, Balit) and Set C={Binicalan}

A C

Poblacion
Muritula, Balit Binicalan

Example 2 : Given   = {2,4,6,8,10,12}, A = {2,6,10} and B = {4,8,12},

Draw a Venn diagram to represent these sets.

Practice: ( use your Math activity notebook)

1. Given   = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}, A = {1, 2, 5, 6} and B = {3, 9},

Draw a Venn diagram to represent these sets.

2. Given U = { corn, rice, adlai, camote, ube },

A = {adlai, camote, ube} and B = {corn, rice},

Draw a Venn diagram to represent these sets.

NULL SET
The null set, also referred to as the empty set, is the set that contains
no elements. Common notations for the empty set include "{ }", ", and "∅".

Example:
{Month having more than 31 days} = EMPTY
{Apple Plantation in San Luis} = EMPTY
{Negative Natural Numbers} = EMPTY

Practice:
a. Set of counting numbers between 5 and 6 = ________
b. Set of odd numbers between 7 and 9 = ________
c. Set of even numbers which are not divisible by 2 = _______
d. { } is a symbol which means __________

CARDINALITY OF SETS

The cardinal number of set A, denoted by n(A), is the number of elements in set
A. Thus, in A = {1, 3, 5, 7}, n(A) = 4 because set A contains 4 elements.

Examples:

Find the cardinality of the following sets.

1. Set D is the set of vowels in English alphabet.
Solution: D = {𝑎, 𝑒, 𝑖, 𝑜, 𝑢}
Answer: n(D) = 5
2. Set R is the set of letters in the word “difficulty”.
Solution: R = {𝑑, 𝑖, 𝑓, 𝑐, 𝑢, 𝑙,, 𝑦}
Answer: n(R) = 8
3. Set M is the set of odd numbers between 1 and 3.
Solution: M = { } or M = ∅
Answer: n(M) = 0
4. Set E is the set of letters in the word “survivor”.
Solution: E = {𝑠, 𝑢, 𝑟, 𝑣, 𝑖, }
Answer: n(E) = 6
5. Set K is the set of counting numbers less than 5.
Solution: K = {1. 2. 3. 4}
Answer: n(K) = 4

Practice:
I. Find the cardinality of the following sets.
__________________ 1. Set A is the set of days in a week.
___________________2. Set B is the set of letters in the word “Indigenous”.
___________________3. Set C is the set of even numbers less than 2.
___________________4. Set D is the set of odd numbers between 4 and 10.
___________________5. Set E is the set of factors of 18.

D. DEEPENING:
Deepen their understanding by asking this question:
In identifying and illustrating Universal Set, does it deepen your appreciation on
IP knowledge and practices? Why?

E. SYNTHESIS:
Sharing of reflection:
Do you think null set best describe a group of SLLCHS students who are shy to
speak their own language? Why?

F. EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:

A. Answer the following:

Given   = {A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I }, X = {A, B, E, F} and Y = {C, I },
Draw a Venn diagram to represent these sets.

B. Identify if the following are set or null set.

1. {Set of counting numbers between 10 and 11} _______
2. {Set of San Luis quarantine facilities} _______
3. {Set of negative numbers between 5 and 7} _______
