INTRODUCTION
The AccuGrade™ Site Reference System (SRS) and Laser Reference System (LRS) provide the
operator with backhoe bucket position but does not control the bucket position.
AccuGrade™ allows the operator to trench with less dependence on traditional stakes, stringers,
or grade checkers. Using cylinder sensing technology, machine mounted components, and an
onboard display, the AccuGrade™ system provides precise elevation information on the LCD
display to achieve accurate depth and bucket position.
With traditional trenching, depth information is typically provided by engineers via a wooden
stake in the ground with elevation markings. Using either conventional survey methods or
lasers, the gradestakes are manually placed by the engineers. The machine operator then digs
the trench and uses feedback from a grade checker along the trench.
With AccuGrade™ SRS, on-board sensors calculate the position of the backhoe bucket teeth
relative to machine position. Adding AccuGrade™ LRS provides accurate machine position
relative to a grade reference established by a laser transmitter on the work site. Bucket position
is displayed relative to the operator established grade line on the display. The grade line allows
the operator to monitor the trench depth during operation.
ACCUGRADE Cylinder
MEASUREMENTS Displacement
Machine Pitch
Machine Roll
Swing Angle
AccuGrade™ works by measuring the swing angle, cylinder displacement, machine pitch, and
machine roll so that the Machine ECM knows the orientation of the machine frame and the
backhoe linkage.
Machine roll is the up and down movement of the machine from side-to-side. Machine pitch is
the up and down movement of the machine from front-to-rear.
The reference point for the bucket is the bucket centerline at the tip of the bucket teeth.

COMPONENTS
The AccuGrade™ Site Reference System and Laser Reference System consist of the following
components:
2
3
The cylinder displacement is measured using cylinder position sensors. The boom cylinder
position sensor (1), stick cylinder position sensor, (2) and bucket cylinder position sensor (3)
are located at the head end of each cylinder.
NOTE: If the machines is equipped with an E-stick, the The E-stick cylinder position
sensor (not visible) is located at the head end of the E-stick cylinder.
The cylinder position sensors are magnetoresistive type sensors, which provide a PWM (Pulse
Width Modulated) signal to the ECM indicating cylinder position.
SERV7106-09 -9- NPI
Vol. 9, No. 2, 2006
A thin piece of magnetoresistive wire (wave guide) is placed inside of a protective tube. The
wave guide transmits the input and output signals. An electronic current (input) pulse from the
sensor electronic assembly creates a magnetic field around the protective tube. The magnetic
field interacts with the position magnet’s magnetic field and causes the wave guide to twist.
This twist is the return signal that is sent back to the sensor electronics at a sonic speed along
the wave guide.
The position of the moving magnet is precisely determined by measuring the elapsed time
between the launching of the electronic pulse and the arrival of the return signal.
The magnetoresistive sensor measures the angle direction from a magnetic field versus the
strength of a magnetic field and provides a larger tolerance for air gap than a Hall-Effect sensor.
SERV7106-09 - 10 - NPI
Vol. 9, No. 2, 2006
The boom swing position sensor (arrow) is located at the rear of the cab at the boom pivot. The
swing position sensor provides a PWM signal to the ECM indicating the boom swing position
(rotary swing sensor).
SERV7106-09 - 11 - NPI
Vol. 9, No. 2, 2006
Inclinometer
The inclinometer (arrow) is located at the rear of the machine below the cab. The inclinometer
senses the machine pitch and roll movements and sends a signal over the J1939 CAN Bus to
the CD600 display which then sends it over CDL to the Machine ECM.
SERV7106-09 - 12 - NPI
Vol. 9, No. 2, 2006
A4:M1 ECM
The Machine ECM (1) is mounted to the bottom of the floor plate (2) in the cab. The Machine
ECM analyzes the signals from the sensors and sends corresponding output signals to the
display.

Vol. 9, No. 2, 2006
Laser Receiver
The AccuGrade™ Laser Reference System uses a 360° omni-directional laser receiver to detect
a laser plane from a laser transmitter. The receiver transmits information about the elevation of
the laser plane to the AccuGrade™ system. The laser receiver must be mounted onto the
electric mast so the receiver faces towards the front of the machine.

10
Electronic Mast
The AccuGrade™ Laser Reference System uses an electronic mast which is located on the front
right corner of the operator compartment. The electronic mast is a telescopic device that is
driven by an electric motor. The laser receiver, mounted on the top of the mast, is raised and
lowered by the mast in order to locate the laser beam.

From the Reference Point screen the On Grade option allows the operator to reset the display to
use the present depth of the trench as a reference point or benchmark rather than to continue to
use the original benchmark that was used before digging began.
The On Grade option is useful for applications where a long trench is desired and the backhoe
must be moved or repositioned to continue digging the same trench. This option is available
through both the AccuGrade™ Site Reference System and Laser Reference System.
If the Laser Reference System is enabled the Continue option will be available from the
Reference Point Screen. This option allows the operator to use a benchmark that was set the
previous time the machine was run. It is useful for continuing work at the start of a shift or
after a break as the operator will not have to return to a known reference point and
rebenchmark. The benchmark data will be valid as long as the height of the laser transmitter
has not been changed.

The Setup menu, accessed from the AccuGrade™ Site Reference screen, contains the following
options:
- The Slope option allows the operator to set the AccuGrade™ system to dig a sloped
trench. A positive or a negative slope can be designated. As shown in this illustration, in
relationship to the backhoe, a negative slope is down and away from the backhoe. A
positive slope is up and away from the backhoe.
- The Cut option that is shown in relation to the Setup screen allows the operator to input
the amount of material that is yet to be removed or the amount of fill that is to be added.
- The Layer Menu option allows the operator to select the depth of the fill or additional cut
that would be needed in a trench. When the operator selects the depth of the fill, the
AccuGrade™ system will inform the operator when the correct level has been reached.
- The Alarm Mode option allows the operator to set an audible alarm to be turned on at
specified times. An example would be if the operator prefers to have the alarm set to
sound if the depth of the trench cut is below the specified grade.
- The Tolerance option allows the operator to adjust the alarm to sound and the status lights
to illuminate within a specified distance of the desired grade level. The tolerance option
provides two options that can be selected and set to a desired distance away from the
desired grade level.
- The pitch and roll values of the machine are determined by the inclinometer. The
Pitch/Roll option allows the operator to only view and accept the present roll and pitch
values of the machine. The only way to change the values that are generated by the
inclinometer is to reposition the machine.
- If LRS is installed and Site Reference is currently enabled the Laser Ref option allows the
operator to enable Laser Reference. If Laser Reference is currently enabled this option
allows the operator to access the Laser Receiver Control menu.
SERV7106-09 - 26 - NPI

23
The Measure Points option allows the operator to measure between two known points and to
gauge individual points from the machine origin. In the Measurements mode, the bucket can
be placed at a specified location and the values on the display can be zeroed. The operator can
move the bucket to another location and the values on the display determine how far the
bucket has moved.
The Machine Linkage option allows the user to update the information for the AccuGrade™
system whenever a backhoe bucket or work tool is changed. A library of Cat work tools allows
the selection of the correct machine linkage information for accurate system operation.
NOTE: The machine linkage information can also be updated using Cat ET.
The Service option allows access to the Events screen, ECM Information screen, Installation
screen, and the Calibrations screen.
The Settings option allows the operator to change the contrast, language, measurement units,
and auto dimming.

The inclinometer is used for both the AccuGrade™ Site Reference System and the Laser
Reference System. The inclinometer calibration is accessed only by holding the OK button for
10 seconds while the "Initializing" screen is shown at key-on.
NOTE: After the inclinometer calibration is entered, a warning screen appears. The
warning must be read and understood before proceeding with the calibration.
The inclinometer calibration (top left illustration) allows the inclinometer to be calibrated with
the use of a visible laser plane. Any time that the inclinometer is replaced, it must be
recalibrated for both roll and pitch.
The operator should set the machine on a solid base with room to swing the backhoe linkage
through its full range of motion. The linkage does not necessarily need to be fully extended,
but the more it’s extended the more accurate the calibration will be.
After the Roll or Pitch option is selected, the user must follow the on screen instructions to
perform the calibration. When the calibration is complete the screen shown in the bottom left
will appear.
29
When LRS is installed and enabled, the laser receiver should be lowered (parked) when turning
off the machine and paused before moving the machine.
Selecting the Park Recv option from the Laser Receiver Control screen (top left) will fully
retract the electric mast. This option should be used at the end of a work shift or whenever the
operator is finished using the Laser Reference System. When LRS is needed again the laser
receiver will have to be positioned to locate the laser plane.
Selecting the Pause option from the AccuGrade™ Laser Reference screen (bottom left)
temporarily stops the laser receiver in order to move the machine on the work site with the
intention to continue digging. Once the machine is stabilized, pressing OK (bottom right) will
resume operation.
