Landscape
LANDSCAPE
• An expanse of scenery that can be seen in a single view.

• A landscape is a natural environment that can be designed by

nature as well as by people.

• Landscape includes man-made and natural landforms.

• It is everywhere and anywhere outdoors.

Landscape can be considered a living sculpture

Landscaping
• The art of landscaping is
purposefully changing the natural
features that exist outdoors.

• It is an activity that modifies the

visible features of an area of land.

• Landscaping involves the process of

making a piece of land attractive by:
 Altering the existing design
 Adding ornamental features
 Planting trees, shrubs etc.
 Providing various amenities
 Creating privacy, comfort, beauty
and ease of maintenance.
• In the 18th century England, landscaping was considered as
form of art equal to painting, literatures, music etc. it was
considered a form of artistic expression.

• Landscaping involves shaping and managing the physical world

and the natural systems we inhabit.

• All the living things are independent and in landscaping they

all come together.
Landscape Architecture
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
Landscape Architecture is the
art and science of designing
outdoor spaces.

 The art provides a vision for a landscape using drawings, models,

computer imaging and text. The elements of design are used to
create these images.

 The science includes an understanding of natural systems including

geology, soils, plants, topography, hydrology, climate and ecology.

 It also includes knowledge of structures and how they are built such
as roads, walls, paving, bridges and even occasional buildings.
• Landscape architecture provides context for everything that is
built.

• Context can be either social, cultural, environmental and

historical among other considerations.

• Land designed for public has a different type of personality than

land intended for private use.

• In landscape architecture such spaces are designed that are

environmentally, socially and aesthetically pleasing.
MAIN COMPONENTS OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
• The two main components that make up the landscape are known as hardscape
and softscape.

• Hardscape and softscape are the complete opposites of each other, yet both are
necessary to make a landscape fully functional.

HARDSCAPE

• Hardscape can be thought of as hard,

sometimes movable, parts of the
landscape, like gravel, paving, and stones.
• They are inanimate objects.
• Hardscape is solid and unchanging.
• Other examples of hardscape include
retaining walls, pavers for paths or patios,
outdoor kitchens, water features, gazebos,
decks, and driveways.
• It can be natural, like stone, or
manmade, like an outdoor structure.
MAIN COMPONENTS OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

SOFTSCAPE

• Consider these the living, growing

components of the landscape. These might
include flowers, trees, shrubs, ground
covers, etc.
• These change and evolve constantly, as they
grow and adapt to climate and other
conditions. Are softer to the touch, quite
literally.
Role of Landscape Architect
ROLE OF A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

• The work of landscape architects is all around us in the form and function of the
land.

• The landscape architects face the shape of the earth across cities, towns and
countryside.

• Landscape architect designs green spaces, conserve them, and prevent their
shrinkage so that they can add to the Quality Of Life.

• For this reason, landscape designers use a design process that systematically
considers all aspects of the land, the environment, the growing plants, and the needs
of the user to ensure a visually pleasing, functional, and ecologically healthy design.
ROLE OF A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT
• Landscape designers work on a canvas that is always changing as the
 Plants grow
 Environmental conditions change
 People use the space
ROLE OF A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT
Landscape architects are playing an increasingly important role in solving
the great issues of our day, such as dealing with climate change and
providing sustainable communities.
A landscape architect contributes in:
 Urban regeneration
 Site/Master planning
 Urban planning
 Restoration of a certain land area
 Parks and recreation planning
 Green infrastructure planning
 Private or residential master planning and design
