MIX DESIGN OF M35 GRADE CONCRETE

Stipulations for proportioning :-

Grade of designation = M35
Type of cement = OPC 53Grade
Slump = 50mm
Method of concrete placing = Non-Pumpable
Exposure Condition = Moderate
Degree of supervision = Good
Type of aggregate = Crushed angular aggregate
Chemical admixture type = Super-Plasticizer
Max.Size of Aggregate = 20mm

Test data for materials:-

Specific Gravity
a. Cement = 3.14
b. Coarse aggregate 20mm = 2.73
c. Coarse aggregate 12mm = 2.61
d. Fine aggregate = 2.58
e. Super-Plasticizer = 1.2

Target strength of mix proportioning :-

Mean target strength = Fck + ( 1.65*S )
Standard deviation (S) = 5 N/mm2
= 35 + ( 1.65*5 )
= 43.25 N/mm²

Approximate Air content :-

The approximate air content for normal concrete is 1.0 percent for 20 mm nominal
maximum size of aggregate.

Selection of water-cement ratio :-

Adopt water-cement ratio = 0.42
From Table – 5 of IS 456 for moderate exposure condition
Maximum water cement ratio = 0.45
0.42 < 0.45 . Hence ok.
Selection of water content :-
For Nominal size of 20mm aggregate, 50mm slump
Water content per m3 of concrete = 186 kg
As,super-plasticizer is used, reduce water content. Based on trial data, the water-
content reduction of 25 percent is considered while using superplasticizer at the rate
of 1.0 percent by weight of cement.
Hence the water content
= 186 * 0.75
= 139.5 Kg ~ 140 Kg

Calculation of cement content :-

Water cement ratio adopted = 0.42
Water content = 140 litres
140
Cement content =
0.42
= 333.33 kg / m3
Adopt cement content = 380 kg/ m3
Revised water content = 0.42*380 = 160Kg
Therefore,adopted water content = 160Kg

Proportioning of volume of C.A and F.A content :-

Volume of coarse aggregate = 0.64
Volume of fine aggregate = 1- 0.64
= 0.36

Mix calculations :-
a) Volume of concrete = 1m3
b) Volume of entrapped air = 0.01m3
c) Volume of cement = ( mass of cement / sp. Gravity of cement )
(1/1000)
= ( 380 / 3.14) * ( 1 / 1000 )
= 0.121 m3
d) Volume of water = ( mass of water /sp. Gravity) (1/1000)
= (160 / 1 )*(1 / 1000 )
= 0.160 m3
e) Volume of all in aggregates = (a- (b+c+d))
= (1-(0.01+0.121+0.160 ) )
= 0.709 m3
e) Mass of coarse aggregate = d*vol of CA* sp. gravity*1000
= 0.709*0.64*2.73*1000
= 1239 kg

f) Mass of fine aggregate = d* vol of FA*sp. gravity*1000

= 0.709*0.36*2.58* 1000
= 659 kg

Mix Proportion :-
i. Cement = 380 Kg
ii. Water = 160 Kg
iii. Fine aggregate = 659 Kg
iv. Coarse aggregate = 1239 Kg

Mix proportion
Cement : Fine aggregate : Coarse aggregate : Water
380 : 659 : 1239 : 160
1 : 1.73 : 3.26 : 0.42
