Learning Episode 5
Creating an Appropriate Learning Environment

Learning Essentials:

Here are major principles of development relevant to this Episode:

1. Specific classroom rules and procedures are clear.

2. Classroom rules and procedures are discussed within the first few days of the school.
3. Students are involved in the design of rules and procedures.
4. Techniques to acknowledge and reinforce acceptable behavior are employed.
5. Clear limits for unacceptable behavior are established and negative consequences or
such are communicated.
6. Classroom processes are democratic.

Activity 5.1

Managing Time, Space and Learning Resources

1. I saw different abilities in each learner. There are students who can easily catch up with
the lesson and few of them are not, but still trying to understand and ask something about
the discussion. Their age ranges from 15 - 16.
2. The advisory class of my resource teacher, 10 - Bonifacio consists of 19 boys and 27girls.
3. They can manage their own behavior, but they will just settle down if the teacher already
warns them. In quizzes, I can see some students who can’t work independently but I
know that they’re trying to answer and understand the quiz. They were doing some
activities such as seat work.
4. I saw that despite their small dialogues or interactions with their peers, they are still able
to concentrate on their tasks and control their behavior by completing their work. The
students are only asking questions that they do not understand because they are already
capable of working independently and do not require any additional help from their
homeroom teacher.
5. As I have observed, they have enough span of attention because they are interested in
learning the topic and they have respect to the teacher.
ANALYZE

Analyze and answer these questions on observed classroom management practices.

It is also good to ask the teacher for additional information, so you can validate your
observation. Write your notes below; and the organize your data in the Table that follows.
1. As I observed the classroom, The teaching materials are kept in a cabinet. The room’s
cleaning materials are located at the back right corner of the room besides in the fitting
room. There are also shelves containing their different educational activities.
2. There are rules and regulations posted in their classroom so that the students participate
in making their home room rules because they are the one involved with this practice.
3. The daily routines are the class starts with a prayer then continues with the checking of
attendance done by the home room teacher, the class discussion and saying their
goodbyes with each other.
4. The seating arrangement is on the basis of alternation (boy, girl) process and in
alphabetical form. The reason for this arrangement is that the students will be able to
socialize well and orderly to the opposite sex.
5. The noise level of the classroom is low because they are well disciplined when it comes
to their behavior when someone is discussing.
6. If a learner does not follow instructions, the teacher provides a disciplinary action to
discipline the student.
7. The teacher does to reinforce positive behavior by talking to the student and making them
have a discipline and respect with each other.
REFLECT

Reflection as a future teacher.

1. Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?

⮚ Positive guidance and discipline are crucial for children because they promote
self-control, teach responsibility and help them make thoughtful choices. The
more effective adult caregivers are at encouraging appropriate child behavior, the
less time and effort they will spend correcting misbehavior.

ANALYZE

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners’ behavior?
⮚ The structure and procedures of the classroom have an impact on how students
behave by helping them understand their obligations as students. Additionally, it
can communicate the professors' expectations to the students in the classroom. An
efficient routine can increase a student's enthusiasm to study and ease them into
their daily activities. This regular program might help students develop better
study habits. A productive classroom schedule can also be advantageous for both
teachers and students. It's because they can effortlessly alter their pursuits without
experiencing any trouble.

2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organizations
and routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?
⮚ It is more likely for students to succeed and cause less distractions in the
classroom when they are taught how to behave throughout everyday routines. If
classroom routines are taught as early in the school year as is practical, students
will understand expectations and the classroom's flow. Once routines have been
mastered, students should be able to switch classes throughout the day with little
to no downtime. The pupils, teaching and learning resources, and furniture are the
variables that must be taken into account. In an organized learning environment,
students are more likely to succeed and make intellectual and personal
advancements. Teachers usually grant students latitude that they may abuse. Lack
of organization can ruin a classroom and undermine a teacher's authority, leading
to misbehavior and wasted time.

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? Is
motivating students? Why were they effective?
⮚ The use of positive reinforcement is one of the most successful behavior
management techniques. The teacher should demonstrate compassion and should
encourage students to pursue their studies by offering rewards or incentives for
excellence in class, whether it be academically or extracurricularly. By doing this,
students will work very hard, will actively participate, and will perform very well.
REFLECT

Reflect on the following and write your insights.

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade year level do you
see yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this level. Why?

⮚ As I imagined myself years from now, I will become a grade 9 math teacher. The
routines and procedure I will implement is that the class will start with a prayer
and will be followed by asking them to remain standing and will do some exercise
to give them some energy. And will ask them how they are feeling. Then, I will
start the class in recalling the past lesson by asking the students if they can still
remember our past lesson, then I will provide active discussion for us to enjoy the
lesson while learning and end this with a motivational quote.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement at this level. Why would you choose
these rules?
⮚ The rules that I would most likely to implement in this group of students are the
following:
1. Always do your homework
2. Pass all your activities, homework or projects on time
3. Always wear your complete school uniform
4. Do not eat during class hours
5. Raise your hand if you want to answer or have any questions or concern
6. Greet the students, teachers, parents, and visitors when entering the
classroom.
7. Always listen to the discussion
8. Respect all the teachers and students
9. Be honest
10. Make sure that your workspace is always clean.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

⮚ Yes. Every student, in my opinion, has opinions that should be heard. Knowing
what each student in the classroom is expected to do morally can also be helpful
to the teacher. They can feel like they belong in the classroom thanks to the other
kids. They might adhere to the rules if they participate in their creation.
They can also work in conjunction with the pupils' teachers. It demonstrates how it can foster
relationships and effective communication between teachers and students. Finally, when they
expressed their thoughts, they could clearly understand the guidelines that would develop. They
will participate in the decision-making process in addition to just listening.
