DJJ3103: STRENGTH OF MATERIAL

TORSION

Related Chapter: Chapter 6

1.0 Experiment outcome

At the end of this laboratory student should be able to:

a) Conduct appropriately lab work in groups according to the standards of procedure.
b) Analyze critically the lab work data in relation to theoretical value.
c) Write report appropriately from data obtained in lab work.

2.0 Theory

Torsion is an important type of loading that can produce critical stresses in engineering
applications. Under torsion, SHEAR stresses are produced. The stiffness under shear stress
is called the modulus of rigidity (G). In this laboratory, we will determine the modulus of rigidity
of the specimen.

Modulus Of Rigidity

It is the ratio of shear stress and shear strain of the material.

Shear Stress τ
G= =
Shear Strain γ

This formula only work when the material is stressed in its elastic region.

Polar Moment of Inertia

A higher polar moment of inertia shows that the beam or specimen can resist a higher torsion
or twisting force. The diameter of the beam determines polar moment of inertia.

3.0 Apparatus/Equipment

a) Torsion specimen (Aluminum). Maximum diameter is 40mm.

b) Computer Controlled Torsion Testing Machine (Maximum Torque 1000 N.m)
c) Hand tools
d) Vernier Caliper

4.0 Safety Precautions

a) Any abnormity occurs during test, press “emergency” button on front control board
& “emergency” button of computer, then the tester will stop at once.
b) Make necessary limit protection before starting test software & during test. During
test, if some parameters reach to set limit, the tester will stop or present necessary
hinting.
c) If the testing machine cannot star up, or halts under normal working conditions, it
may be resulted from controller protection. Make clear the reasons & rectify the
problems. Normally: Emergency stop button “on”, limit protection and go beyond the
measuring range of load cell etc.

d) Only professional operator could make adjustment or change the parameters to the
servo controller. When any confusion or trouble occurs, please read the instruction
manual carefully, don’t make blinding operation or repairing.
e) Turn on the power, if the indicating lamp doesn’t light, check whether the breaker
switch & heat barrier protection are releasing, also the connecting of single circuit
switch. Otherwise to check the fuse of power supply

5.0 Procedures

a) Switch on general power supply, computer power supply and enter into test
software (SmartTest). After self-checking, the system will enter into menu interface.
b) Preliminary operation before test:
i. Measure the diameter and length of specimen.
ii. Place the specimen on the Clamp 1.
iii. Adjust the specimen by using Hand Control Panel until the specimen meet the
clamp hole on Clamp 2.
iv. Push the torque measuring device forward towards the specimen.
v. Set limit protection parameters so as to protect the load cell & specimen.
c) Print out the torque – torsion angle graph.
d) Test over: After test, if loader stands under load, it’s better to unload the torque to
zero. Then, unload the specimen.
e) Switch off the computer & controller, shut off the power & test finished.

7.0 Discussion

1. Calculate the value of modulus of rigidity (G) obtained from lab work result.
Compare your result with the published value of the modulus of rigidity for the
given specimen.

2. Plot a torque versus angle of twist graph. Also, record the final torque reading of
the specimen at failure, Tf.

8.0 Conclusion and Recommendation

Write the conclusion of this exercise.
