samples include:

a. Soil Classification using the USCS (ASTM D2487)

b. Grain Size Analysis (ASTM D422)
c. Atterberg Limits (ASTM D4318)
d. Moisture Content (ASTM D2216)

This report also presents all field and laboratory procedures adopted in the
investigation as well as the evaluation of the initial test results and
recommendations for the flood mitigation structures and drainage systems.

2. OBJECTIVES

The geotechnical engineering study aims to:

a. Assess the geologic and geotechnical conditions of the project site.

b. Evaluate geotechnical parameters necessary for the design of flood
mitigation structures/ earth retaining structures.

3. REGIONAL GEOLOGY

Region 1 is located in Stratigraphic 1 – Ilocos (Suyo Schist). The Suyo Schist,

exposed largely in Suyo, Burgos, Ilocos Norte consists of amphibiolite, quartz-
biotite schist, actinolite -tremolite-tal schist and quartzite, which are mostly in
fault contact with sepentinized peridotite. These rocks are probably Cretaceous
age.

The amphibolite schist is light to dark green, fine to medium-grained and is

characterized by planar orientation of green amphibole, chlorite, feldspar and
quartz. The rock exhibits usually nematoblastic texture with large bluish green
amphibole and prismatic, light-colored epidote. The quartz-biotite schist,
consisting dominantly of quartz with lesser amount of biotite, epidote, garnet,
hematite and piedmontite, occurs intimately with the amphibolite schist. The
actinolite-tremolite-talc schist, a product of dynamothermal metamorphism is
structurally confined along the contact of the intensely sheared serpentinized
peridotite.

4. TECTONIC ACTIVITY AND SEISMICITY

The Philippines accounts for 3.2% of the world’s seismicity. It is situated in the
Circum-Pacific Belt, Ring of Fire, where 80% of the world’s earthquakes occur.
Philippine seismicity is mainly related to plate subduction and in part to strike-
slip motions along trans-current faults.

The country is a north-south strip of lithosphere built partly on obducted oceanic

basement rocks, and by portions of drifted continental crust from southern
China. It is pictured as a wedge caught in between two opposite dipping
trenches. The northwestward moving Pacific Plate pushes the Philippine Sea
Plate beneath the eastern side of the archipelago at the rate of about 7
centimeters per year (PHIVOLCS, 1991). The oceanic parts of the slower
moving Eurasian Plate are being subducted along the western side of Luzon
and Mindoro at the rate of 3 centimeters per year. Table 1 shows the seven (7)
regional seismic zones in the Philippines. These are delineated and interpreted
as follows in the succeeding pages.

There is no active or potentially active fault transecting the project site. Based
on the maps published by PHIVOLCS, the active fault nearest to the project
area is the East Zambales Fault.

5. GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION PROGRAM

The geotechnical program consists of three (3) boreholes. The summary of field
investigations is summarized in Table 2.

Borehole Drilling Procedure

In the boreholes, the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was carried out, in
accordance with ASTM specifications. For each test, a 2-inch (50.8mm) outside
diameter Spoon Sampler is driven into the soil a distance of 18 (460mm) inches
by means of a 140 lb. (63.5 kg) driving mass falling free from a height of 30
inches (760mm).

The number of blows needed to drive the sampler 18 inches (460mm) is

recorded and the number of blows needed to drive the last 12 inches (305mm)

is taken as the N-value. Soil samples were recovered using the spoon sampler
and were then taken to the laboratory for analysis and testing.
When rock formation is encountered, the drilling team resorted to rock coring.
The Rock Quality Designation (RQD) of the rock formation was also recorded.
RQD is an index or measure of the quality of a rock mass and is computed from
recorded core samples as:

𝛴𝛴 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙ℎ𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 > 100 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚

𝑅𝑅𝑅𝑅𝑅𝑅 =
𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙ℎ 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑐𝑐𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎

Complementing the field activities is the laboratory testing of the samples

obtained. The results of the field work and laboratory investigation were then
used to establish the subsurface profile and the parameters for determining
important geotechnical parameters.

LABORATORY TESTING
Representative soil samples obtained during drilling were subjected to the
following laboratory tests:

Grain Size Analysis as per ASTM D422

This method covers the quantitative determination of the distribution of particle
sizes of soils.

Soil was passed through a series of sieves, the weight of soil retained in each
sieve determined and recorded. For each sample analyzed, a gradation curve
was drawn based on the percent finer weight.

Determination of Moisture Content as per ASTM D2216

This method covers the laboratory determination of the water (moisture) content
of soil by weight.

The moisture content of a material is defined as the ratio, expressed as a

percentage, of the mass of pore water in a given mass of material to the mass
of the solid material particles.

Atterberg Limit Test as per ASTM D4318

This test method covers the determination of the liquid limit, plastic limit, and
the plasticity index of soils.

Liquid Limit of Soils

The liquid limit of a soil is the water content expressed as a percentage of the
weight of the oven-dried soil after attaining the condition between the liquid and
plastic states.

Plastic Limit and Plasticity Index of Soils
The plastic limit of a soil is the water content expressed as a percentage of the
mass of the oven-dried soil after attaining the condition between the plastic and
semi-solid states. Plasticity Index is defined as the difference between the liquid
and plastic limits of the soil.

6. RESULTS OF FIELD AND LABORATORY TESTING

The results of the subsurface investigation show that the site's subsoil generally
underlain by sand of varying relative condition.

The table below present the subsurface conditions based on the results of field

8. FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
8.1. Liquefaction Potential

Soil liquefaction is a phenomenon that occurs mostly in medium to

fine-grained sands wherein a mass of soil loses a large percentage of
its shear resistance when subjected to monotonic, cyclic or shock
loading, and flows in a manner resembling a liquid. Much of the
damage on substructures and foundation during earthquake is
attributed to this phenomenon.

The methods based on the Standard Penetration Test was used in

assessing liquefaction potential on the project site. Based from the
borehole log results as the reference for the computation, the table
below shows the estimated depth of layers that are liquefiable.

8.2. Shallow Foundation

The choice of the foundation scheme mainly depends on the

magnitude of the structural loads that must be transmitted by the
foundations into the underlying ground. For the project site, the
allowable bearing pressures are listed in Table 10. Moreover, footing
tie beams are recommended to mitigate differential settlement. The
allowable bearing pressures are within the allowable settlement of 25
mm for isolated foundations
