What are managerial roles?

Discuss possible challenges a manager would face when carrying


managerial roles in an organization?

The term managerial roles refer to specific grouping of individual managerial behavior. Henry Mintzberg
has categorized these behaviors in to 10 different roles which falls into 3 basic categories as
Informational roles, Interpersonal roles, and Decisional roles. His 10 roles are as listed below.

Informational roles – These roles related to information handling.

1. Monitor – In this role, manager will collect information related to the organization and the
industry and any relevant changes in the environment along with monitoring to the team, in
terms of both their productivity, and their well-being.
2. Disseminator – This role is more as communicating useful information to peers and the team.
3. Spokesperson – Managers who represent and speak for organization and manager is
responsible for passing on information about the organization and its goals to outside of the
company.

Interpersonal roles – These roles are related to handling people

4. Figurehead – This tole has the social and legal responsibilities, and this manager is a source of
inspiration.
5. Leader – A manager who provides leadership for his team and his designated department
6. Liaison – Managers who are in this role must communicate with internal and external contacts
and maintain effective communication on behalf of the company.

Decisional roles – These roles are related to taking decisions when required utilizing the information
and available resources

7. Entrepreneur – This role creates and maintain a productive change in the organization by
solving issues, implementing new ideas.
8. Disturbance Handler – A manager who must take charge when in need of problems
9. Resource Allocator – This role mainly handles the resources in the company such as allocating
funds, assigning employees.
10. Negotiator – A manage who does negotiations within the team, department, or organization
when required.

And when a manager carries out the above roles in an organization, they will be facing many challenges
such as they have to do Planning, Leading, Organizing and Controlling to drive towards their goals as a
one organization. They must take care of providing leadership to others, coordinating the activities of
employees, delegating authority to peers, taking important decisions and they must make sure their
planning structures will be suitable enough to work in the prevailing environment by anticipating future
events and changes. And they must plan everything with the available limited resources to achieve the
set goals in a productive way without wasting the resources. And a manager must manage conflicts
between the employees because it can lead to low production, employee dissatisfaction towards the job
and leaving the company. And the managers who has decisional roles they have to manage internal
stakeholders and politics as well and at the same time focus on how to conduct effective training
sessions and mentor employees to utilize them to get the effective work done which is very
challenging. .
