THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

This chapter presents the Background of the Study, Statement of the

Problem, Hypothesis, Conceptual framework, Scope and Delimitation of the
Study, Significance of the Study, Definition and Terms that are related to the
study.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social media is all about cooperation, networking, sharing, and creating

information and material. In the context of higher education, each of those
characteristics is extremely valuable. Social media is a web-based service that
enables users to build either a fully or partially public profile inside a controlled
environment. On the other side, social media is rapidly altering societal discourse
and establishing trends and agendas in a wide range of areas, including politics,
the environment, technology, and the entertainment sector.

The usage of social media has a significant impact on one's social life,
privacy, health, and most significantly, academic performance. This study intends
to explain how a Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences student's academic
performance is impacted by social media.

The Social Media is a great help across the country because doing
homework or activities that help make it less difficult for a student to do his work
and almost all student around the world are already using it because it is the one
of the helpful so they can spend more time doing their work. But it also have a
bad effect, one of which is that it does not limit the time spent on it and it us
usually used by student who are no longer doing their work, they choose to
spend time on Facebook and what Social Media apps they use.

1
In this research proposal, Social media among students will be in focus in
order to know its effects to the academic performance of a student. Researchers
conduct this research because it’s very timely and relevant for today’s situation.
Researcher will study if want to know why or how the students use more time on
using it. The objective of this research is also to give awareness to people about
its positive and negative effects specifically to the academic performance of the
student. This study tends to answer and give solution regarding its effects to a
student.

The respondent must be a grade 12 Senior high school Humanities and

Social Sciences student. They will also answer a survey about how social media
affects their academic performance. Researcher will choose selected 40
respondents on grade 12 in San Isidro Senior High School. They will also put
their general average to know if there’s a significance relationship in using social
media to their academic performance.

In terms of their skill, they will include Critical Thinking, Comprehension

skill, and also Communication Skill because this are the most likely to improve
while using social media to improve their academic performance. And they don’t
need to include some information that not useful or connected to our topic such
as not a grade 12 Humanities and Social Student, some school is too far to their
location so they choose a school where they studying. And in term in skill that
can be developed they must pick what the most accurate to improve in terms of
using social media platform.

CHAPTER II
RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter consists of the Review of Literature and Studies both foreign
and local and the similarities and differences of those researchers were
established in relation of the present study. Theoretical Framework and
Paradigm were also divided.

RELATED LITERATURE

According to Simonson (2012) claims that from the start, correspondence

courses acquired a poor academic reputation, especially those provided by for-
profit entities. As early as 1926, as a study commissioned by the Carnegie
Corporation found, there was widespread fraud among correspondence schools
in the United States, and there were no adequate standards to protect the public.
While the situation was later improved by the introduction of accrediting agencies
that set standards for the delivery of distance learning programs, there has
always been concern about the quality of the learning experience and the
verification of student work. Additionally, the introduction of distance learning in
traditional institutions raised fears that technology will someday completely
eliminate real classrooms and human instructors.

This work is truly significant to the study "effect of social media in

academic performance in grade 12 humanities and social science” because the
academic performances of the students are connected in the future.

According to Ojalvo (2011) states that the social media scholar Reynol
Junco answers questions about his recent findings — some of which may
surprise you about the kinds of behaviors correlated with certain ways college
students use Facebook.

9
The magazine paper is are similar to the study " effect of social media in
academic performance in grade 12 humanities and social science "because most
of students are using Facebook in this generation mostly 70% of people are
using Facebook app so the negative effect of social to the students , they give
more time to Facebook instead of school work.

According to Jessop (2012) claims that several start-up companies have

begun offering cloud-based platforms that combine education and social media.
Companies like Teamie, based in Singapore, provide software that lets teachers
create, share and manage academic content, and also let students collaborate
on assignments on platforms that are similar to the “walls” used on Facebook.

According to shout Uk (2021) states that Media has become an essential

part of our lives. It surrounds us and is used in almost every aspect of life. With
the advancements in technology, media can be used for teaching and learning
purposes more than ever before. Media aids teachers in presenting information
to students by engaging them more effectively than traditional methods while
also providing many benefits to both students and teachers.

She wrote an article that is published in the Georgetown University

Center for Social Impact Communication which tackle about on how social media
is reshaping the education system nowadays. She had stated the positive
impacts of it in the world as the advent of technology keeps on going which
undeniably, social media will always be a part of everyday's life. Therefore, this
article concludes that schools should be highly encouraged to use social media
in the educational process effectively. In this case, this article can be a
supporting document for the researchers of the effect of social media in
academic performances of grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS)
Student to have a better understanding of the power of social media in the
students' learning process and in the educational system changes.

10
According to Wade (2021) claims that there’s no denying that, ever since
social networks and social media made way into our lives, everything is different.
Beginning with the way we socialize, interact, plan for parties or even how often
we go out. We won’t go into a debate regarding the ethical aspects of the way
Social Media is influencing our lives.

Instead, this article proposes to focus on the numerous ways in which

social media is changing the way the education system works. So, stay tuned to
find out what effects does social networking have on the way our children are
educated both at school and outside of it.

According to herald (2020) claims that social media platforms are

amongst the most widely used sources of information in the World, the easy and
inexpensive access to the internet and a large number of registered users in
these platforms make them one of the easiest and most effective ways to
disseminate information. During major events, the overall response is usually a
greater search for information be it a sports event, a disease, or a natural
disaster.

This title work is entitled "varying influence of social media to learners

during pandemic" this is truly significant of the study" effect of social media in
academic performance in grade 12 humanities and social science " the positive
effects of having social media during pandemic to the students , they are
continuously learning by using google meet, or zoom, but sadly other students
losing interest in studying because they miss face to face classes.

According to Samantha Murphy Kelly (2023) Seattle's public school

system on Friday filed a lawsuit against several Big Tech companies alleging
their platforms have a negative impact on students' mental health and claiming
that has impeded the ability of its schools to fulfill its educational mission. The
lawsuit was filed against the parent companies of some of the most popular

11
social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and
YouTube.

This newspaper's study and the researchers study are comparable in that
both demonstrate how social media negatively affects students' mental health. As
a result, researchers were able to identify one of these effects of social media on
students. This publication focuses on halting the further growth of social media,
especially given how it impacts students and their schoolwork, which makes it
different from the researchers study.

According to Eoin Whelan, Et Al (2023) It has long been recognized that

social media use distracts students from their academic work and can have a
negative impact on their wellbeing. In our research, we have focused on the
phenomenon of techno stress to explain why this is the case. Techno stress
refers to the stress individuals experience from their inability to cope with the
demands of information technology. Students often experience techno stress
from using social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, which in turn
diminishes their self-control.

This newspaper and the researchers study have a lot in common

because both of us are aware of how social media affects students' academic
performance in their opinion despite the fact that it also has more negative
effects than positive ones. This newspaper's goal is to focus on the phenomena
of techno stress and to explain why this is the case, which is different from the
goal of researchers study.

According to Sakina Qasim Zaidi Et Al (2022) states that in recent times

both social media and technology have become an indispensable part of our
lives. Students are using various online tools to enhance their learning. It will not
be wrong to say that social media and education go hand-in-hand in the modern
world.

12
According to a recent study, more and more teachers around the world
are incorporating social media into their classrooms to engage students both
online and in person. In short, we can say social media is shaping and
influencing how students learn and interact today.

This newspaper's findings are similar to those of researchers study in

that they acknowledge social media's positive impact on students' academic
achievement as well as their interpersonal relationships. This newspaper informs
that social media, particularly for students, does not cause much harm but
instead is a wonderful assistance to them, which is the difference between them
and the researchers study.

According to Charles Ogwo (2022) states that labake was just one of the
millions of students all over Nigeria that are constantly distracted from their
learning by the social media bug. Social media refers to a group of Internet-
based applications that is based on the ideological and technological foundations
of Web 2.0 that allows the design and exchange of ‘user-generated
content’.These social media sites vary from application to usage and content.
The most popular of these are Facebook, Skype, Instagram, WhatsApp and
Twitter.

Researchers study revealed a negative impact of social media on

students one of its side effects and like it was said in the newspaper social media
is a distraction particularly for students’ academic performance. This is where
researchers study and this newspaper's findings are identical. This newspaper
differs from researchers study in that it focuses on the reasons why social media
distracts students and includes information about how much time students spend
on social media in its reporting.

According to Jennifer A. Kingson(2023)Experts are increasingly warning

of a connection between heavy social media use and mental health issues in

13
children a hot topic now driving major lawsuits against tech giants. Why it
matters: Seattle Public Schools' recently filed lawsuit against TikTok, Meta, Snap
and others which accuses the social media giants of contributing to a youth
mental health crisis is one of hundreds of similar cases.

This newspaper and researchers study both deal with social media and
its impact on students, and their coverage demonstrates how excessive usage of
social media negatively affects students' mental health. The difference between
this newspaper and the researchers study is mental health and social media. The
goal of this news is to convey to the reader that social media has a significant
impact on the mental health of students, and they also want a lawsuit against
large social media companies. media company, but they failed, and this is the
difference between researchers study in this newspaper.

According to Ankita Pathak (2022) state that research has shown that
over 95% of students have access to some sort of mobile device that connects to
the internet, meaning that using mobile technology for educational purposes will
possibly exclude less than 5% of students. With the digital age, social media has
become an important tool not only for communication and marketing but also in
the field of education. The lockdown phase during COVID-19 has witnessed the
closure of various educational institutes, leaving social media the only place for
students to interact.

The similarity of this newspaper to the researchers study is that it says

that social media has become an important instrument, especially in education. It
shows that social media has a good effect because here from the word social
media it shows the similarities in researchers studies and in determining why
social media has a big impact that has become part of almost every student's
daily activities. The difference between this newspaper and the researchers
study is that this newspaper shows how many students use social media for
educational purposes and how many use it for entertainment.

14
According to Miao Chen (2022) claim that the use of social media is
incomparably on the rise among students, influenced by the globalized forms of
communication and the post-pandemic rush to use multiple social media
platforms for education in different fields of study. Though social media has
created tremendous chances for sharing ideas and emotions, the kind of social
support it provides might fail to meet students’ emotional needs, or the alleged
positive effects might be short-lasting.

The similarity of this newspaper to researchers study is that it is stated in

the newspaper that the impact of social media globally is great for them, but the
good that social media brings to the students who use it is not long lasting, and
the researchers study is to learn about the effect of social media on academic
performance of students, and it helps a lot. The difference between this
newspaper and researchers study is that this newspaper focuses on socializing
through social media.

According to Erik Ofgang (2022) states that regardless of their own

feelings about it, social media is something educators need to contend with and
can help their students navigate. “Kids are on social media, and it's an
undeniable force in our society that can and does have some valuable
information and access to experts,” says Christine Elgersma, senior editor for
learning apps and websites at Common Sense Education. On the flip side, she
says social media is hard to contain and control because the privacy issues can
be so extensive. One good approach in general is for an educator is to ground
class exploration of social media in source evaluation. “It’s a great place to
practice media literacy and news literacy because those are the sources that
students are encountering in their daily lives," she says

The similarity between researchers study and this newspaper is that

social media is also harmful to them because it is so widespread that it is difficult

15
to encourage the use of social media, particularly among students this news says
one of the effect of social media in students also it affects to their academic
performance. The difference between this newspaper and researchers study is
that they are looking for an answer as to why so many people are addicted to
social media, so they spend more time on it.

According to INQUIRER special report of Kurt Dela Peña (2022) states

that social media memo turns controversial.

This news story is similar to this study on how they use social media at
work. The distinction between this and research is that there is no student
involvement and no academic performance is developed.

According to INQUIRER special report of Kirstin Bernabe (2013) states

the many use of social media in learning.

The news report is similar to this study on how social media have a many
use a way of learning and how to guide student using social media in their
academic performance. The difference between the study and the news is that
there is no academic performances that involve.

According to INQUIRER special report of Daphne Galvez (2022) states

that Department of Education clarifies order on teachers’ use of social media to
air criticisms.

The use of social media within the school is one of the similarities
between this report and research. The distinction is that it focuses on teachers in
the Department of Education.

16
According to INQUIRER special report oh Joey Gabieta (2022) claims
that Department of Education says teachers are not prohibited from using social
media.

The similarities between this new report and the study are that social
media was used within the premises, but the difference is that no students were
involved in the issue.

According to INQUIRER special report of Irene R. Cino Cruz (2019)

states use social media platforms to promote advocacies, instead of just using
these for gaming and entertainment.

This news report is similar to this study in using social media but the
difference is its focusing on the promoting advocacy and there is no student and
academic development was involve.

According to Manila Bulletin special report of Merlina Hernando-Malipot

(2022) states that Department of Education (DepED) allowed teachers to reach
out to students on Social Media within school setting.

There similarities are using students can use social media in school
premises but the difference is there is no academic performances and
development involve on the news.

According to Mania Bulletin special report of Merlina Hernando-Malipot

(2022) states that Department of Education announced to public to stop
spreading unverified news, and messages to social media.

There similarities are using students can use social media in school
premises but the difference is there is no academic performances and
development involve on the news.

17
According to Manila Bulletin special report of Seth Cabanban (2022)
states that Hataman ask “should we let social media mold our value as Filipino?”

The similarities of the news and this study is how social media being us.
The difference is the news report is focusing how social media influences the
moral value of the Filipino and there is no academic performances are affected in
an issue.

According to Manila Bulletin special report of Aaron Homer Dioquino

(2022) claims that Quezon City Police District (QCPD) chief denies alleged
harassment of students, reminds public to check the accuracy of social media
posts.

There similarities are about using social media but the difference is the
news is all about student who are negatively use it by posting and there is no
academic performances involved in the news.

According to Manila Bulletin special report of Chito Chavez (2021) states

that town and city mayors in the National Capital Region and four adjacent
provinces have to issue executive orders and come up with the list of
beneficiaries before the assistance from the national government would be
downloaded to them an official of the Department of the Interior and Local
Government (DILG) said.

The news report is similar to this study of using social media as a way to
communicate. The difference is that theirs is no student involved even the
academic performances of the student.

18
According to Manila Bulletin special report of Mario Casayuran (2020)
states that Pangilinan urges Filipinos to use social media power for good.

The news report is similar to this study how social media is a power for
good but the differences are there is no connection between student and
academic performances.

According to Manila Bulletin special report of Aaron Homer Dioquino

(2022) states that Mayor Gatchalian reminds students in Valenzuela to use social
media responsibly.

The news report is similar to this study how student use the social media.
The differences are there is no such learning or academic performances had
involved in the news report.

According to Manila Bulletin special report of Martin Sadongdong et al

(2019) states that Father Conegundo Garganta, executive secretary of the
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Youth,
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian’s call for the Department of Education (DepEd) to
make responsible social media use a key component in mental health programs
for schools, was a “good move.”

The news report is similar to this study; it’s talking about how they use
social media within the premises. The news report differs in that there is no
academic performance involved.

According to Manila Bulletin special report of Merlina Hernando-Malipot

(2022) Teachers find Department of Education (DepED) order to cut social

media ties with students ‘ironic’.

19
The news report is similar to this study of how social media used by
teachers especially by students on how to communicate. The difference the two
it’s about teachers complaining about cutting ties to their students.

According to Manila Bulletin special report of Minka Klaudia Tianco

(2020) state that the progressive student organizations have called for the
junking of new guidelines issued by the University of Santo Tomas (UST) stating
that all social media posts by student organizations will be monitored by the
administration.

The similarities between the news report and the study is that student
uses social media. The differences are that there is no Academic Performances
have been involve and it is also tell how University of Santo Tomas that students
social media posting will be monitored.

RELATED STUDIES

According to Kennedy Imasuen (2020) states that Social media have

changed the way people interact and communicate in the world today. This study
examines the impact Of the social media on the academic Performance of
Secondary School Students in Benin Metropolis of Edo State.

The similarity of this abstract to the researchers study is how social

media change the way of learning in every students. The difference of this
abstract to the researchers study is the purpose of this article is to know the
impact of social media to the academic performance of the secondary students in
benin metropolis but in our study we focus on how social media effect to the
academic performance of every students in humanities and social science.

According to Emeri (2019) states that this study examined influence of

social media on students ’ academic performance among secondary school
students in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. Students’ usage of

20
social media should be monitored and controlled by teachers and parents to
curtail the negative influence .There is need to design appropriate behavioural
change communication materials that will educate adolescents and parents
about the potential benefits and draw backs of using social media.. Also, the
government should ensure strict compliance to age restrictions in social
networking thereby preventing the under aged from undue exposure to
information that may be damaging to both his personality and educational
pursuits.

The similarities of this abstract to the researchers studies is this abstract

also have a negative effects to every students who use social media to there
academic performance. The difference is This abstract aims to convey to readers
that students' mental health is significantly impacted by their use of social media.

According to Shi, et al (2020) claims that an emerging phenomenon,

social media overload has become prevalent among students and led to
significant negative consequences. Results indicate that the three types of social
media overload are significant stressors that create technostress, but solely
information overload significantly influence exhaustion. In addition, technostress
and exhaustion likewise exhibit negative influences on the academic
performance of university students.

This abstract and the researchers study are similar in that they both
discuss the detrimental effects of social media use on young people. This
abstract and our study differ from one other in that they discuss the various
reasons why social media negatively impacts students' academic performance.

According to Kausar Awan (2019) states that media is playing a very

prominent role in the life of a modern man. There are a large number of people
who use different type of social media in order To keep them update and
connected with the entire world. Using social media affects

21
Their study and academic performance and ultimately their result
become effective. Some of the students cannot remain away from using social
media and it affects their academic performance badly. This abstract and the
researchers study are comparable in that they both examine the positive and
negative effects that social media might have on students' academic
performance. Their study is different from researchers study in that it is
concentrated on the potential benefits and drawbacks of social media as it
relates to each student's academic performance.

According to Barton, et al (2018) claims that accessing social media is

common and although concerns have been raised regarding the impact of social
media on academic success, research in this area is sparse and inconsistent.
Predictors, social media usage and attention, significantly predicted academic
performance. Likewise, when motivation was considered as a predictor, it
significantly predicted academic performance above and beyond social media
usage. No moderation was found between the three variables. Implications of
these relationships are discussed.

This abstract and the researchers study are similar in that they both
discuss potential effects of social media on students' academic performance as
well as the detrimental effects it has on young people who are becoming almost
completely reliant on social media. The difference is this abstract focus on the
potential effects of social media on academic success and how social media use
relates to overall academic performance, which makes them different from one
another.

According to Guinchiglia, et al (2018) claim that among the general

population, students are especially sensitive to social media and smartphones
because of their pervasiveness. Several studies have shown that there is a
negative correlation between social media and academic performance since they
can lead to behaviours that hurt students’ careers, e.g., addictedness. However,

22
these studies either focus on smartphones and social media addictedness or rely
on surveys, which only provide approximate estimates Given how devoted the
students are to social media and how little they are aware of its detrimental
effects on their academic performance, there is a similarity between this abstract
and the researchers study. As a result, it is important to explain why it is not
advisable for students to spend too much time on social media because it will
also have an impact on their academic performance.

This abstract and researchers study is different in that their study does
not only focus on how social media affects students' academic achievement but
also on the detrimental impacts it has on students' conduct.

According to Habes et al (2020) claims that the aim of this paper is to

highlight the impact of social media on students in the Higher educational
universities and its impact on the students’ academic performance. Social Media
has become one of the most popular means of communication due to its ability to
deepen the conviction of the recipient and to increase his knowledge and trends.

This abstract and researchers’ study is similar in that they both examine
how social media affects students, particularly in terms of academic
achievement. It is comparable to our study because we similarly want to
understand how social media affects students' academic performance. This
abstract differs from researchers’ study in that they are aware of the popular
applications that students use, which is why it has a negative impact on students'
academic performance. When they use several amusing apps, they have more
fun. instead of utilizing it to improve their academic achievement.

According to Mahdiuon, Et Al ( 2020) the past two decades, researchers

and educators have always tried to explore the effects of social media on
academic engagement and performance in higher education settings. The
present study examines the effect of the adoption of Telegram on academic
engagement and performance of graduate students in two Iranian universities
23
this abstract is comparable to researchers study in that it deals with similar topics
because it likewise examines how social media affects students' academic
performance. The difference between this abstract and the researchers study is
that their study concentrated on analyzing the impact of Telegram adoption on
academic participation.

According to Nonso, (2022)states that the use of digital technology in

education has attracted much interest in the recent years. Social Media are
growing rapidly among the young generation of the world. School age students
widely engaged using social media. So, they will affect students personal and
academic live.

This abstract and researchers’ study are similar in that they are aware of
the consequences social media may have on academic performance due to the
rise in social media users, and we are also aware of the potential effects social
media may have on students' academic performance. This abstract differs from
researchers’ study in that they have data on how many people think social media
has a negative impact on their academic performance and how many say it has a
positive one. They also include teachers who utilize social media to engage with
students.

According to Alamri, Et Al (2020) states that nowadays, social media

applications (SMAs) which are quite popular among students have a significant
influence on education sustainability. However, there is a lack of research that
explores elements of the constructivist learning approach with the technology
acceptance model (TAM) in higher education. Therefore, this research aimed to
minimize the literature gap by examining the SMA factors used for active
collaborative learning (ACL) and engagement (EN) to affect the students’
academic performance in measuring education sustainability, as well as
examining their satisfaction from its use.

24
The resemblance of this abstract to researchers study also demonstrates
in their study the effect of social media on the academic performance of students
at the same time as the spread of social media around the world. They know how
students' academic achievement affects measures of education, which makes
their research different from ours from this abstract.assessing their level of
satisfaction with its use and sustainability.

According to Sivakumar R. (2020) claims that the use of digital

technology in education has attracted much interest in the recent years. Social
Media are growing rapidly among the young generation of the world. School age
students Widely engaged using social media. So, they will affect students
personal and academic live. Thus, this study is designed to find out the Effects of
Social Media on the academic performances of students In Cuddalore District.

The similarities between this abstract and researchers’ study is that both
of us are aware of how social media affects students' academic performance,
and because social media has become so widespread, we are also aware of
both its positive and negative effects on students' academic performance. This
abstract differs from researchers’ study in that their study sought to determine
how students' use of social media affected their academic achievement. The
study showed that the majority of pupils had smartphones with internet access
and were familiar with the Social media's existence.

According to Yu, Et Al (2019) states that social media has deeply

penetrated into university students’ daily lives, inducing excessive usage that can
result in social media overload. However, only few studies have explored the
adverse consequences of social media use from a pedagogical perspective.

This abstract and the researchers’ study are similar in that both of them
examine how social media use affects academic achievement and how it
damages students. Compared to researchers’ study, this abstract is different.
adds to the study on overload by locating a more an extensive list of social
25
media-related Specifically, information overload in the context of education
Overload in terms of social, communication, and information.

According to Sohail, ET AL (2019) claims that today’s generation is of

Networking. It is amazing to look how Internet is changing the lives of people.
Social Networking is an international trend, and has spread its wings and has
reached to that limit where we can find anyone from any part of the World and
gain ample knowledge relating to anything.

This abstract's discussion of social media's impact on students' academic

performance and how those students use it to improve it is comparable to how
the researchers conducted the study. The difference of this abstract to
researchers study is their research is mostly about The kids access a variety of
social media platforms for two to four hours every day, depending on the
YouTube, Facebook, and WhatsApp are the most popular forms of media.
Social media use: How frequently use affects students' academic success in
accounting, with female students having a greater average. compared to male
pupils' success levels.

According to Alkhateeb M. (2020) states that there is no doubt that social

media continues to influence the communication setting of our modern world, and
it continues to contribute to and influence the academic lives of the students
across the globe.

The facts that social media has such a strong impact on students and
that we are aware of how it affects students' academic performance is the reason
why this abstract and researchers’ study are similar. This abstract and
researchers’ study are different in that they both put more of an emphasis on
looking at the effects of different amounts of time spent on social media during
several pertinent instances, such the times that kids are holidays from school.

26
According to Raza, ET AL (2020) states that students are regularly
engaged in several things at the same tie during class and school time. They are
using smartphones, tablets, laptops, and using social media on these devices
while learning and attending class. This abstract and researchers’ study are
comparable in that we both understand how social media affects students'
academic performance and what kinds of bad experiences students have on
social media.

These abstract and researchers’ studies are different in that their

research focused more on the parental influence's buffering effects. Support from
the school regarding the connection between technological stress, online
bullying, and student performance.

According to Mercado, M. W. C. (2018) stated that the goal of this

research is to determine the effects of the exposure of Grade 12 Humanities and
Social Sciences (HUMSS) students to social media on their academic
performance in their specialized subjects. Specifically, the research would like to
identify the social media applications utilized by students. The expected results
will propose an academic scheme to inspire the Grade 12 Humanities and Social
Sciences HUMSS students on their academic performance.

The resemblance of this abstract to researcher’s study is to know the

effect of social media on the academic performance of grade 12 humanities and
social science. They are also expected to contribute, especially on academic
schemes, which is where this abstract and researchers study vary. This will be
used as an additional resource available to instructors to boost academic
performance of student’s performance, as well as tools for the school's
instruction and professional growth.

27
According to Abrenica, ET AL (2021)states that this study is entitled,
“Effects of Social Media on Academic Performance of Don Ramon E. Costales
Memorial National High School Students.” The study was conducted at Don
Ramon E. Costales Memorial National High School in Villasis, Pangasinan. The
Philippines This study aimed to determine the extent of students’ utilization of
social networking sites, their reasons for using social media, and their social
media preference. It also tried to explore how the different variables such as sex,
age, religion, grade level, type of social networking sites, and the number of
hours spent in studying affect the extent of their social media usage.

The only resemblance between this abstract and researchers study is

that both investigate how social media affects students' academic performance.
They want to know a lot about social media and students' academic
performance, which is how this abstract differs from researchers study. They also
want to know how much time pupils spend on social media.

According to Gagalang, J. L. (2022) states that profusely widespread

use of social media opened multiple reading opportunities for learners. However,
educators have growing concern that excessive use of social media
compromises learners’ reading competence and, eventually, academic
performance.

This abstract and researchers study is both concerned with how social
media affects students' academic performance, which is where the similarities
end. And what benefits can social media have for students' academic
achievement. This abstract and researchers study differ in that their research
sheds light on how social media usage affects students' reading attitudes,
whereas researchers study only provides a summary of the topic and influencing
how adept they are at reading.

According to Whelan, Et Al (2020) states that research suggests

University students are more disposed than others to develop problematic social
28
media use. Social media overload, the phenomenon where users are exposed to
a massive amount of information and communication demands via social media
that may require energy and cognitive processing beyond their capabilities, is the
specific problem under investigation in this paper.

This abstract's investigation of the impact of social media on students'

academic performance is similar to researchers own study in some ways. This
abstract and researchers study are different in that their research contributes to
the understanding of problems societal By highlighting the psychological and
behavioural factors that impede student media use academic standing.

According to Morallo, I. M. (2014) claims that in the advent of internet

technology, social communication using The internet became the frontier of daily
communication, collaboration And networking. This frontier is delineated by many
social networking Websites and portals. This study was conducted to determine
the efects Of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) on students’ academic
performance In Lyceum of the Philippines – Laguna.

These abstract and researchers studies are similar in that both aim to
determine how social media affects students' academic performance and how
much it aids their studies. The difference between the abstract and researchers
study is that they seek to understand the substantial role that social media plays
in students' academic success since, according to their poll, many people believe
that social media has a negative impact on students' academic performance.

According to Teves-Pinili,ET AL (2018) states that social networking sites

have tremendously grown since their emergence in society And have
increasingly attracted so many visitors especially students. The effect of Social
networking on the education of the young has also yielded varied opinions from
people.

29
The study of social media's effects on academic performance and what
students' experiences have been with utilizing social media are comparable to
researchers study in this abstract. The results of their study show that social
media has a negative impact on health, which makes this abstract different from
researchers study. If used properly, networking could significantly improve pupils'
academic performance. responsibly.

According to Almerino, Et Al (2020) states that with growing

technological advancements, demands for the industry with skilled and equipped
workforce are proportionately rising. While this match between curricular
offerings in academia and needs in the industry has been addressed in many
countries across the globe through initiatives such as the K-12 educational
system, some countries like the Philippines have only started its adoption.

This abstract and researchers study is comparable in that both of them

sought to understand how social media, particularly in the current climate, affects
students' academic performance. This abstract differs from researchers study in
that it focuses on how social media influences academic achievement, whereas
the adoption of the k–12 educational system is the main topic of discussion here.

According to Tus, Et Al (2021) claims that social media use has become
prevalent and nearly inevitable, changing the way studentsInteract, connect, and
socialize; it has become an integral part of their social and cultural Fabric. As a
result, students spend a significant amount of time on social media. Thus, This
study investigates the impact of social media usage on students’ academic
Performance amidst the new normal of education, specifically during the COVID-
19 Pandemic.

30
The abstract and researchers study are comparable in that they both
discuss how social media might impact academic achievement, particularly in the
present day and its educational system. These abstract and researchers studies
differ in that they cover the advantages and disadvantages of social media as a
learning tool during the Covid 19 era.

According to Berondo, Et Al (2021) states that the 21st century

emphasizes the role of technology in Adifferent facets of life, especially in the
educational system, as it serves as a platform for teachers and students in the
delivery of effective teaching and learning process.

This abstract and researchers study is similar in that they both examine
how social media has both positive and negative effects on students' academic
achievement. They also both examine how social media has made learning
easier. This abstract differs from researchers study in that they also examined
the important findings that exposure to the use of technology and students' study
habits are closely related.

According to Lee, Et Al (2017) states that examine the influence of a

positive attitude towards technology, number of social media network
memberships and grade-point average (GPA) on global citizenship identification
antecedents and outcomes.

This abstract and researchers study is similar in that both focus on how
social media affects students' academic performance and in particular the
benefits it provides to each student's academic performance.

This abstract and researchers study differs from one another in that they
place more emphasis on the advantages of social media for students.

31
According to Chua, ET AL (2019)The advancement of Science and
Technology Can mirror the progress of human civilization. The Advancement in
this field includes rapid development of Cuttingedge technologies that range from
hardware Devices, software, and various applications ultimately; the goal of all of
these is to provide a good life to its Users; getting things done the fastest, most
accurate and efficient way possible.

This abstract and researchers study is similar in that they both discuss
how technology affects students and whether social media has an impact on their
academic performance. The difference between this abstract and researchers
study is that they concentrated on how Advancement in this discipline entails
quick development of Cutting-edge technologies that include hardware devices,
software, and different applications are, in the end, getting things done quickly
and accurately is the aim of all of them in order to give its users a nice life,
quickest and most effective manner.

According to Cruz, Et Al (2013)states that using proportional random

sampling, 86 researchers working at the University of the Philippines Los Baños
(UPLB) were chosen as respondents of a survey study that aimed to determine
scientists’ perceptions and use of social media for research.

The resemblance of this abstract to researchers study is the study

regarding the benefits of social media in education. This abstract and
researchers study are different in that this abstract is more concerned with the
factors that affect how people utilize social media.

32
According to Tucay, Et Al (2016) states that the new millennium has
brought new trends and movements that have profoundly touch the lives of
people throughout the world. These changes make the world a global village, and
people live in a world of globalization. These speeded interactions among people
in the various parts of the globe precipitated the need for a lot of information. It is
said that inventions change the way we live. Technology and the strong presence
of mass media is a classic example of this and it has indeed changed our way of
living. The parallels between mass media and the education system are striking.

This abstract and researchers study is similar in that they both discuss
how social media has altered how people teach and learn. and what impact does
this have on the students' academic achievement. This abstract and researchers
study is different in that their descriptive study was completed in order to gauge
the impact. of mass media to the political science students at Kalinga State
University's level of understanding.

According to Custodio, Et Al (2021)states that the COVID-19 pandemic

has caused a drastic shift in the education system Around the world, with
institutions suspending face-to-face mode of learning and Switching to online
learning. This sudden shift has forced the education sector to form Alternatives
by utilizing various online platforms as learning tools, particularly social Media
sites. The present study aimed to identify the role of social media in online
Learning and to explore the experiences of Filipino undergraduate students in
using Social media for online learning amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

This abstract and researchers study is similar in that both focus on the
effects of social media on student academic performance. Additionally, how
social media aids pupils in online learning This abstract and researchers study
differ in that their research focused on how social media impacted students'
academic achievement during COVID-19.

33
According to Bautista, E. B. (2020) claims that this study determined the
mediating effect of students’ perception towards social media on the relationship
between vocabulary learning Attitude and language skills development. The
quantitative approach Using the correlational technique and mediation analysis
were utilized in this study with a sample of 350 students coming from the senior
high School department of the University of Mindanao main campus.

The similarity between this abstract and the researcher’s study is how
social media influences how students study. This abstract differs from the
researcher’s study in that it focuses on the significant partial mediation of the
students' perceptions of the influence of social media on the relationship between
Vocabulary Learning Attitude and Language Skill Development The study
demonstrated this.
