1.3.2 - Compromise for design operating conditions
Heat recovery operation should not affect significantly unit
COP compared to regular air cooled chiller, i.e. if design is
30°C ambient, saturated condensing will be approx. 50°C, if an
heat recovery of 52°C leaving heat recovery condenser is
required, saturated condensing temperature will have to be
controlled at 57°C contributing to cooling capacity losses and
increased unit kW input. This should always be part of return
cost calculation of the installation.

1.4 - Unit schematic (shown for circuit A of a 3 or 4

comp unit)
In order to maintain:
Heat recovery suitable head pressure for hot water supply.
Correct expansion valve feeding (refrigerant charge manage-
ment).
For each circuit a part of the air cooled condenser is drained
during heat recovery operations (Between Condenser off sole-
noid valve to condenser off drain line solenoid & check valve).
Condenser draining sequence is initiated whenever unit is
switched to heat recovery. Solenoid valve “hr-val-a” is closed,
EXV is temporarily closing during the time it takes to drain the
condenser section. Once pressure switch “pd-a-sw” is closed ;
valve “hr-val-a ” is closed and EXV will open again to control
cooler refrigerant level.
