Factoring GCF
MMXXI - MMXXII
Find the greatest common factor (GCF) of
monomials.
Factor polynomials by factoring out the greatest
common factor (GCF).
Factor expressions with four terms by grouping.
Find the greatest common factor of the following
numbers.
1. 3, 24, 12 3
2. 16, 12, 28 4
3. 30, 40, 50 10
4. 18, 36, 54 18
5. 32, 24, 64 8
Find the GCF for each set of terms.
1. 12𝑎3 and 18𝑎2
3 2 2
2. 20𝑎𝑏 and 25𝑎 𝑏
1. 12𝑎3 = 𝟐 ⋅ 2 ⋅ 𝟑 ⋅ 𝒂 ⋅ 𝒂 ⋅ 𝑎
18𝑎2 = 𝟐 ⋅ 𝟑 ⋅ 3 ⋅ 𝒂 ⋅ 𝒂
GCF = 𝟐 ⋅ 𝟑 ⋅ 𝒂 ⋅ 𝒂 = 𝟔𝒂𝟐
2. 20𝑎𝑏 3 = 4 ⋅ 𝟓 ⋅ 𝒂 ⋅ 𝒃 ⋅ 𝒃 ⋅ 𝒃
25𝑎2 𝑏 2 = 5 ⋅ 𝟓 ⋅ 𝒂 ⋅ 𝑎 ⋅ 𝒃 ⋅ 𝒃
GCF = 𝟓 ⋅ 𝒂 ⋅ 𝒃 ⋅ 𝒃 = 𝟓𝒂𝒃𝟐
The Distributive Property is used to factor out the GCF
of the terms in a polynomial and to write the polynomial
in factored form. Recall that the Distributive Property
states that 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑎𝑐 = 𝑎 𝑏 + 𝑐 . The expression 𝑎 𝑏 + 𝑐
is the factored form of 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑎𝑐, 𝑎 is the common factor
of the terms. 𝐹𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 is the reverse of multiplication.
Consider the product 2 𝑥 + 3 = 2𝑥 + 6 . Use the
distributive property in factoring.
2𝑥 + 6
=2∙𝑥+2∙3
𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑜𝑛 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 = 2
𝐹𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑜𝑢𝑡 2 𝑏𝑦 𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑏𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑦
= 2(𝑥 + 3)
The original terms are each divided by the GCF to
determine the terms in parentheses.
Use multiplication to check.
2 𝑥+3
= 2𝑥 + 6
A polynomial is completely factored if all its factors can
no longer be further expressed as a product of
polynomials with lower degree and whose integral
coefficients have no common factor other than 1 or −1.
In factoring polynomials, we use the following steps:
1. Find the greatest common factor or GCF of the
numerical coefficients.
2. Check the variable which appears in all terms. If a
variable appears in all terms, choose the lowest
degree for each variable.
3. Divide each term by the greatest common factor.
4. Write the factored form (the product of the GCF and
the resulting expression after dividing each term by the
GCF).
Factor each polynomial. Check your answer.
1. 9𝑥 2 + 15𝑥
2. 5𝑚3 − 25𝑚4 + 30𝑚2
3. 12 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 32 𝑥 + 𝑦
1. 9𝑥 2 + 15𝑥
9𝑥 2 = 𝟑 ⋅ 3 ⋅ 𝒙 ⋅ 𝑥
15𝑥 = 𝟑 ⋅ 5 ⋅ 𝒙
GCF = 𝟑 ⋅ 𝒙 = 𝟑𝒙
= 𝟑𝒙(𝟑𝒙 + 𝟓)
3𝑥 3𝑥 + 5 = 9𝑥 2 + 15𝑥
2. 5𝑚3 − 25𝑚4 + 30𝑚2
5𝑚3 = 𝟓 ⋅ 𝒎 ⋅ 𝒎 ⋅ 𝑚
25𝑚4 = 𝟓 ⋅ 5 ⋅ 𝒎 ⋅ 𝒎 ⋅ 𝑚 ⋅ 𝑚
30𝑚2 = 2 ⋅ 3 ⋅ 𝟓 ⋅ 𝒎 ⋅ 𝒎
GCF = 𝟓 ⋅ 𝒎 ⋅ 𝒎 = 𝟓𝒎𝟐
= 𝟓𝒎𝟐 𝒎 − 𝟓𝒎𝟐 + 𝟔
5𝑚2 𝑚 − 5𝑚2 + 6
3 4 2
= 5𝑚 − 25𝑚 + 30𝑚
3. 12𝑦 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 32(𝑥 + 𝑦)
12𝑦 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 𝟐 ⋅ 𝟐 ⋅ 3 ⋅ 𝑦 ⋅ 𝒙 + 𝒚
32 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 𝟐 ⋅ 𝟐 ⋅ 2 ⋅ 2 ⋅ 2 ⋅ 𝒙 + 𝒚
GCF = 𝟐 ⋅ 𝟐 ⋅ 𝒙 + 𝒚 = 𝟒 𝒙 + 𝒚
= 𝟒 𝒙 + 𝒚 𝟑𝒚 + 𝟖
4 𝑥 + 𝑦 3𝑦 + 8
= 4 𝑥 + 𝑦 3𝑦 + 4 𝑥 + 𝑦 8
= 12𝑦 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 32 𝑥 + 𝑦
To check if the factored form is correct,
multiply the factors. If the original algebraic
expression is obtained, the factored form is
correct.
