SOLID STATE AMPLIFIER
OPERATION MANUAL
1 GENERAL INFORMATION
CONTENTS
Regardless of how well electrical equipment is designed, personnel can be exposed to dangerous
electrical shock when protective covers are removed for maintenance or other activities. Therefore, it is
incumbent on the user to see that all safety regulations are consistently observed and that each individual
assigned to the equipment has a clear understanding of the first aid related to electrical shocks. (see next
pages)
¾ Do not attempt to adjust unprotected circuit controls or to dress leads with power on.
¾ Always avoid placing parts of the body in series between ground and circuit points.
¾ To avoid burns, do not touch heavily loaded or overheated components without precautions.
¾ Remember that some semiconductor cases and solid-state circuits carry high voltages.
¾ Do not assume that all danger of electrical shock is removed when the power is off. Charged
capacitors can retain dangerous voltages for a long time after power is turned off. These capacitors
should be discharged trough a suitable resistor before any circuit points are touched.
¾ Don't take chances. Be fully trained. Screen Service Italia equipment should be operated and
maintained by fully qualified personnel.
¾ Do not service alone and do not perform internal adjustments of this unit unless another person
capable of rendering first aid and resuscitation is present.
¾ Some components used in the construction of this equipment contain Beryllium Oxide (BeO). This
substance is harmless as it is, but becomes highly dangerous if it is ground to powder. Special
procedures of disposal must be observed in case of failure of these devices.
NOTE: This section is not intended to contain a complete statement of all safety precautions which
should be observed by personnel in using this electronic equipment or others.
Screen Service shall not be responsible for injury or damage resulted from improper procedures or from
using it by improperly trained or inexperienced personnel.
When connecting the equipment to the power , please follow these important recommendations:
¾ This product is intended to operate from a power source that will not apply more than 10% of the
voltage specified on the rear panel between the supply conductors or between either supply
conductor and ground. A protective-ground connection by way of the grounding conductor in the
power cord is essential for safe operation.
¾ This equipment is grounded through the grounding conductor of the power cord. To avoid electrical
shock, plug the power cord into a properly wired socket before connecting to the product input or
output terminals.
¾ Upon loss of the protective-ground connection, all accessible conductive parts (including parts that
may appear to be insulating) can render an electric shock.
¾ To avoid fire hazard, use only the fuse of correct type, voltage rating, and current rating. Refer fuse
replacement to qualified service personnel.
¾ To avoid personal injury, do not remove the product covers or panels. Do not operate the product
without the covers and panels properly installed.
In maintaining the equipment covered in this manual, please keep in mind the following, standard good
practices:
¾ At regular intervals, the condition of the equipment and the correct functioning of protective and
safety devices shall be checked by a skilled person approved by the appropriate authority for this
duty. Functional checks shall be carried out on interlocking systems of doors, mechanical interlocks,
isolating switches, earthing switches, parallel resistances and protective devices against over-
voltages and over-currents. The above checks shall not be carried out after the protective and safety
devices have operated under fault conditions. The safety devices shall not be altered or
disconnected except for replacement, nor shall the safety circuit be modified without specific
approval of the appropriate authority in each case.
¾ When connecting any instrument (wattmeter, spectrum analyzer, etc.) to a high frequency output,
use the appropriate attenuator or dummy load to protect the final amplifiers and the instrument input.
¾ When inserting or removing printed circuit boards (PCBs), cable connectors, or fuses, always turn off
power to the affected portion of the equipment. After power is removed, allow sufficient time for the
power supplies to bleed down before reinserting PCBs.
¾ When troubleshooting, remember that FETs and other metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) devices
may appear defective because of leakage between traces or component leads on the printed circuit
board. Clean the printed circuit board and recheck the MOS device before assuming it is defective.
¾ When replacing MOS devices, follow standard practices to avoid damage caused by static charges
and soldering.
¾ When removing components from PCBs (particularly ICs), use care to avoid damaging PCB traces.
¾ Before starting work on the equipment, it shall be isolated from the mains supply. This disconnection
shall always be checked by visual inspection. Further precautions shall be taken to ensure that the
mains supp!y cannot be restored whilst work is being carried out. After the mains supply has been
disconnected, all other lines such as control, interlocking and modulation lines shall be disconnected
if they carry dangerous voltages. Moreover, the antenna or the antenna transmission line shall be
disconnected from the antenna terminal device to prevent the introduction of dangerous voltages
due to antenna pick-up. When disconnection of the antenna or antenna transmission line is not
possible, other suitable precautions shall be taken, for example, earthing, when necessary at several
places, to esablish absence of voltage. These earthing connections shall be very short compared
with the wave-lenght.
¾ Capacitors which are connected to a circuir isolated frcm its supply shall be discharged and have
their terminals permanently short-circuited and the casing earthed during the whole period of the
work.
¾ The electrical charge retained by electrical machinery when stopped may, in certain cases, be
sufficient to cause a severe shock. This shall be taken into account when making connections to an
apparently "dead" machine. Therefore all machinery shall be discharged and earthed using an
adequately insulated lead for this purpose. The discharge operation shall be repeated several times.
¾ Before any maintenance work is carried out on automatic or remote controlled equipment, the
remote swithching circuits shall be made inoperative.
After the equipment has been isolated according to the standard EN60215, the absence of voltage shall be
determined at the work place. This may be done by the use of voltage indicators, measuring instruments,
glow discharge lamps for indicating radio-frequency voltage or other suitable means.
If someone seems unable to free himself while receiving an electric shock, turn power off before rendering
aid. A muscular spasm or unconsciousness can make a victim unable to free himself from the electrical
power.
If power cannot be turned off immediately, very carefully loop a length of dry non-conducting material (such
as a rope, insulating material, or clothing) around the victim and pull him free of the power. Carefully avoid
touching him or his clothing until free of power.
Step 1
Check the victim for unresponsiveness. If there is no response, immediately call for
medical assistance, and then return to the person.
Step 2
Position the person flat on their back. Kneel by their side and place one hand on the
forehead and the other under the chin. Tilt the head back and lift the chin until teeth
almost touch. Look and listen for breathing.
Step 3
If not breathing normally, pinch the nose and cover the mouth with yours. Give two
full breaths. The person's chest will rise if you are giving enough air.
Step 4
Put the fingertips of your hand on the Adam's apple, slide them into the groove next
to the windpipe. Feel for a pulse. If you can not feel a pulse or are unsure, move on
to the next step.
Step 5
Position your hands in the center of the chest between the nipples. Place one hand on
top of the other.
Step 6
¾ Remove all clothing from the injured area, but cut around any clothing that adheres to the skin and leave
it in place. Keep the patient covered, except the injured part, since there is a tendency to chill.
¾ Splint all fractures. (Violent muscle contractions caused by the electricity may result in fractures.)
¾ Never permit burned surfaces to be in contact with each other, such as: areas between the fingers or
toes, the ears and the side of the head, the undersurface of the arm and the chest wall, the folds of the
groin, and similar places..
All the parts making up the equipment have got danger identification tags (with a yellow background) to
highlight the parts dangerous for the operator that has access to the system.
Presence of hazardous energy levels
A hazardous energy level is defined as a stored energy level of 20 J or more, or an
available continuous power level of 240 VA or more, at a potential of 2 V or more.
Before removing or replacing any PCB assembly within the equipment, make sure that all precautions
comply with ESD protections (ESD = Electro Static Discharge). Make sure that electrostatic discharge
protections are reset after maintenance and/or measurement operations.
This ATTENTION tag is used for the majority of electronic devices that are sensitive to
electrostatic discharges.
If electronic parts have to be touched during installation or repair, please observe the following precautions.
Flexible cord. To be connected to the elastic wrist band and the special plug on
the shelf highlighted with the ESD warning label.

2.1 INTRODUCTION
The SCA 102UB model is a solid state amplifier designed for use in the UHF 470 ÷ 860 MHz frequency band
(Band IV & V), for amplification of analog or digital TV signals.
If used with an analog TV signal, it provides a nominal output power of 1000 W peak sync (common
amplification of video and audio carriers).
If used with a DVB-T signal, it provides a nominal output power of 250 W average when used with a DVB-T
signal, with sidebands equal or better than -36dB at F0 ± 4.3MHz.
2.2 PURPOSE
This manual contains information and reference documentation on installation, operation and maintenance of
the SCA 102UB solid state amplifier.
2.3 COMPOSITION
The SCA 102UB is mainly composed of the following parts:
-4 solid state amplifier modules (350W, class AB), used for the final stage (M7U400-S).

The equipment is a class AB amplifier designed to be used as stand alone final stage. It is completely wide
band, so normally no tuning operation is required over the entire band.
The R.F. input stage consists of two class A amplifier modules connected to the R.F. input through the first
splitter.
The signal is amplified and then divided in 2 ways by means of two 4 ways couplers.
Each way feeds a 350 W class AB amplifier module. The output signal at the four modules is recombined
first with 2 way couplers and then with a 4 way coupler. The output passes through a directional coupler.
The directional coupler detects samples of direct and reflected power at the output of the amplifier, and feeds
the PWR and REF inputs of the protection and measuring board.
The protection and measuring board controls the output peak power, the reflected peak power, the heat-sink
temperature, voltages and current of each power supply output. In alarm condition it disables the power
supplies. When the alarm condition extinguishes the board enables the power supplies again.
By means of a multifunctional two rows LCD display on the front panel, it is possible to monitor all the
equipment parameters such as: output power, reflected power, power supply boards voltages, R.F. modules
currents, heat-sink temperature, all protections thresholds and some alarms related information.
Each fan is temperature controlled by means of a temperature sensor (separate from the measuring board).
The sensors are mounted directly on the heatsink, and reduce the speed of rotation of the fans at lower
temperatures.

PROTECTIONS
The protection system of the SCA 102UB is controlled by the 103S99 protection and measuring board.
In alarm condition the microprocessor disables the RF amplifier modules power supplies and increases the
internal fault counter. After 30 seconds (approx.) it checks again the amplifier parameters and attempts to
restart the equipment.
During this process the ALARM red led on the front panel flashes.
If the alarm condition disappears, the protection board enables the power supplies. If no other alarm acts
within 15 minutes the fault counter is positioned to zero and the alarm log is deleted.
After 3 failed attempts the microprocessor stores the incurred alarm and switches off the RF amplifier
modules power supply. In this case the alarm condition needs to be reset manually or by means of
AUX/REMOTE socket (pin 10).
When the amplifier is in lock condition the ALARM red led on the front panel lights permanently.
To manually reset the alarm condition, just push the two SELECT buttons at the same time.
When in alarm condition, push one of the SELECT buttons on the front panel to reach the ALARM
CONDITION MENU. The following list shows examples of given alarm messages:
When more than one alarm condition occurred, the display shows an alarm code number. This number is the
sum of all incurred alarm codes (please refer to the following table).
ALARM IS: 3
Tries: …
The following example shows a P.S. 1 alarm plus a P.S. 2 alarm plus HI TEMP alarm.
ALARM IS: 28
Tries: …
2. Verify the input of the filter is correctly connected to the "RF OUTPUT" connector on the SCA 102UB
rear panel.
6. Verify the EXT. ENABLE green led is on. If it is off, it indicates the amplifier is receiving the disable signal
from an external device.
7. Verify if the internal fans have started. Note that the fans’ speed is temperature controlled. Therefore the
fans will rotate at low speed when starting with a cold heatsink.
9. Turn ON the ON/STAND-BY switch on the front panel; the ON green led lights on and the STAND-BY
yellow led lights off. The DRIVER green led lights on, this means the amplifier is sending the enable
signal to the external driver. Wait for the soft-start time of the exciter, then verify the amplifier multimeter
displays the rated output power.
¾ Check Power Supplies are all < 16 A at the maximum output power, and check that they are all the
same value (within 1A)
¾ Disconnect the antenna cable and connect a 50 Ω 2000 W dummy load to the RF OUT of the output filter
(optional).
¾ Turn on the equipment and check the RF REF level. If the problem seems solved, look for faults in your
antenna system. If the problem persists go on with the next step.
¾ Disconnect the output filter and directly connect the dummy load to the "RF OUTPUT" connector on the
rear panel.
¾ Turn on the equipment and check the RF REF level. If the problem looks solved, control the tuning and
the correct working of your output filter. Also check the cable connecting the filter to the "RF OUTPUT" of
the SCA 102UB.
¾ If the problem persists contact your local service representatives or TECHNICAL SUPPORT DEPT. at
Screen Service Italia ( Tel. +39 030 3582225 - Fax +39 030 3582226 - E-mail support@screen.it ).

4.3.1 DESCRIPTION
The purpose of the protection and measuring board 103S99 is to protect the SCA 202UB amplifiers and to
monitor the working parameters of the equipment.
The board measures the R.F. peak output power, the reflected R.F. power and the R.F. output combiner
temperature.
The measurements, scaled to an appropriate range, are sent to the analog multiplexer CD4067B (IC12).
Every single analog and digital input is protected against overvoltage by a resistor-diode network.
The analog multiplexer routes the measurements to the 12 bit A/D converter (AD7893, IC3).
An 8 bit microprocessor controls the boards and keeps track of the alarms.
At the boot-up the display shows the model number (please refer to chapter 3 in this manual for information
concerning commands, status and alarms procedure).
The push-buttons SW2 and SW3 are used to scroll menus on the LCD display.
The board, via an RS485 serial link, can communicate with external devices, such as remote control units. It
can send status flags and parameter values, and it can receive external commands.
Alarm thresholds and parameter calibration are performed during the final check of the equipment. It is
strongly recommended to not change factory setting. Calibration must be carried out by fully trained and
qualified personnel.
¾ Open the amplifier top cover to reach the back of the protection and measuring board (mounted in
vertical position on the back of the front panel).
¾ Using the SELECT buttons on the front panel, scroll the menus to reach the alarm threshold to be
modified.
¾ Use the SELECT push-buttons on the front panel to modify the selected alarm threshold.
NOTE: When two different parameters are shown on the same menu, use the ON/STAND-BY switch
on the front panel to select the one to be modified (STAND-BY position for voltage thresholds, ON
position for current thresholds). During this operation always keep pressed the "program enable"
push-button.
REFERENCE FUNCTION
R37 It regulates the multimeter calibration when measuring output power

4.4.1 DESCRIPTION
The M7U50-SCA module is a power amplifier based on two MOSFET devices in LDMOS technology. Its
peak power capability is in excess of 70W.
The pre-matched MOSFET devices are very stable thanks to gold metallization and a package design which
allows an excellent thermal transfer between the chip and the heat-sink.
The amplifier is completely wide-band and it can be used with no need of tuning over the entire band.
Two M7U50-SCA are used to drive the final stage through the two 4 way splitters. The 2 modules are
attached to the same heatsink as the final stage amplifiers.

4.5.1 DESCRIPTION
The M7U400-S module is a power amplifier based on two MOSFET devices in LDMOS technology. Its peak
power capability is in excess of 350W.
The pre-matched MOSFET devices are very stable thanks to their gold metallization and a package design
which allows an excellent thermal transfer between the chip and the heat-sink.
The active devices work in class AB. The amplifier is completely wide-band and it can be used with no need
of tuning over the entire band.
To obtain superior performances and to maintain I.M.D. and spurious products at a very low level the
amplifier is over-dimensioned and employed at 70% of the LDMOS transistors rated output power.
Two fans on the back of the cabinet, and a superabundant heat-sink provide cooling to the amplifier boards.

5.1 INTRODUCTION
At Screen Service Italia, we continually try to keep our customers up with the latest technology by adding
circuit and component improvements to our equipment as soon as they are developed and tested.
Sometimes, due to printing and shipping requirements, we can't get these changes immediately into printed
manuals; therefore this manual may contain new change information on following pages.
A single change may affect several sections. Since the change information sheets are carried in the manual
until all changes are permanently entered, some duplication may occur.
If no such change pages appear following this page, this manual is correct as printed.
Special versions and variants required by individual Customers are also described in this section.
