OVERVIEW OF THE TOPIC


Swing is the most popular social dance for couples in the USA in the 1950’s. It is an
outgrowth of Jitterbug. Swing is the newest name given for Jitterbug. Although this type of
dancing is very popular among the youth, the gaiety of the music appeals to all ages. Swing steps
pattern lend to varied interpretation. Partners hold both hands and do the quick steps followed by
placing weight on the ball of one foot the shifting the weight to the other. It is characterized by
frequent turns and intricate variations along side with good sense of rhythm, poise, grace and
confidence. This is a very lively ballroom dance.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Perform the dance “Swing” gracefully and enthusiastically
2. Performance test
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Discuss the history and analyze the basic steps of ballroom dance “Swing”
2. Interpret correctly the variations involved in the dance
3. Create and execute different variations.
4. Identify the fitness component of swing.
5. Perform with grace and precision the different variations.

Basic Steps of Swing


Man’s Part
Standing position – feet together
Step left foot backward – ct. 1
Step right foot in place – ct. 2
Step left foot forward – ct. 3
Step right foot in place – ct. 4

Lady’s Part
Standing position – feet together
Step right foot backward – ct. 1
Step left foot in place –ct. 2
Step right foot forward –ct. 3
Step left foot in place …ct.4

Directions: Read, analyze, interpret and execute correctly the sample ballroom dance
steps variations of “Swing”, where students and teacher demonstrate in this part.

The lady starts with the opposite foot and moves to the opposite direction.
The boy start with the left foot while the girl start with the right foot.

When facing audience girl stay at the right side of the boy.
