Introduction
Streaming files can be used to present three‐dimensional data in various Microsoft products, such as
Word, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer.
Visualisations such as real‐time rotation and zooming are possible with the streaming file embedded into
one of these products.

Requirements
Prior to proceeding with this tutorial, you will need:
• Surpac 6.1 or later installed, and
• The dataset to be used for visualisation.

Workflow

Note: The Workflow shown here is not intended to be exhaustive in scope, but will show the workflow
needed to achieve a result.

Setting the Work Directory

A work directory is the default directory for saving Surpac files. Files used in this tutorial are stored in
the folder:
<installation directory>\demo_data\tutorials\streaming_files
where <installation directory> is the directory in which Surpac was installed.
1. In the Navigator, right‐click the streaming_files folder.

2. On the popup menu, select Set as work directory.

The name of the work directory is displayed in the title bar at the top of the Surpac window.

Creating a Streaming File

Overview
The following concepts are presented in this chapter:
1. Setting the work directory.
2. Displaying data in Surpac.
3. Exporting to a streaming file.

Requirements
Prior to performing the exercises in this chapter, you will need:
• Surpac 6.1 or later installed.
• A dataset, such as Surpac DTMs, string files, etc.

Display the Dataset in Graphics

A streaming file is created from all data currently visible in graphics.
In this example you will use a dataset installed with Surpac. You may use any data.
1. Open project.swa, by double‐clicking the icon next to the filename or drag and drop the file from
the Navigator into graphics.
Several DTMs and string files are displayed:

Export Streaming File

1. Choose File > Save to Stream Control.

Viewing a Streaming File in HTML

Overview
The following concepts will be presented in this chapter:
1. Opening a HTML file containing a streaming file.
2. Installing the driver.
3. Viewing the data in the streaming file.

Requirements
Prior to performing the exercises in this chapter, you should have:
• a *.hsf file created previously.
• a *.html file which refers to the *.hsf file.
• Internet Explorer v6.1 or later.

Viewing the HTML file

• From Windows Explorer, double click on the filename to open the file design.html.

Installing the Driver

If you have not previously viewed any hsf files on your computer, you will be prompted to install the
driver from the form below.
• Click Install.

Note: Depending on the speed of your modem, it may take a while to download and install the driver
software.
The file is approximately 2.2 Megabytes so on a 56Kbits/sec modem it will take approximately 2 200 000
bytes / 5600 bytes/second = 392 seconds = 6.5 minutes
