Practice

Every sentence has two parts: the subject and the predicate. The subject describes
whom or what the sentence is about. The simple subject is a noun or pronoun that
states exactly whom or what the sentence is about.

The predicate is a verb that tells what the subject does, what is done to the subject, or
what the condition of the subject is. The simple predicate is a verb or verb phrase that
tells what the subject of the sentence does or is.

A Use each of these subjects in a sentence with the predicates listed.

1. Subject: bird Predicate: flew


The bird flew around the tree.

2. Subject: fluffy cat Predicate: ran


The fluffy cat ran home.

3. Subject: ball Predicate: threw


He threw the ball into the sea.

4. Subject: movie star Predicate: signed


A movie star signed my shirt.

5. Subject: cup Predicate: broke


My graduation cup broke.
