a) What are the major landforms?
Ans: The major landforms found on earth are—
• Mountains
• Plateaus
• Plains

b) What is the difference between a mountain and a plateau?


Ans: The difference between a mountain and a plateau is given below.

Ans: Mountains are highly useful to mankind. Some of such usefulness are
described below.
• Very high mountains, such as Himalayas, have snowcaps and glaciers which
are source of many rivers, falls, streams etc. Water from the mountain is used
for drinking, irrigation, generation of hydro-electricity, etc.
• Mountains are sources of various plants and animals. Forests in the mountain
provides us timber, fodder, various plant products such as resin, gum, latex
etc.
• Mountains are used as travelling sites and tourist destinations. Many tourists
visit mountain regions for trekking and adventure sports such as skiing, river
rafting, paragliding, hang-gliding, etc.

e) How are plains formed?
Ans: The rivers and their tributaries result in erosion of rocks and soil while
flowing down through the slopes of the mountains. These materials are carried
forward and deposited along the course of the rivers as they pass through the
valleys. Deposition of those materials for a long period of time forms the plains.

f) Why are the river plains thickly populated?


Ans: The reasons behind plains are quite thickly populated are—
• The land in the plains is the most fertile, thus agriculture is easily possible.
• Also, plains without elevation are easier place for transportation, construction
of buildings. Thus, most river plains in the world are thickly populated.

g) Why are mountains thinly populated?


Ans: The reasons behind mountains are thinly populated are—
• Mountains generally have harsh climatic conditions.
• Lands in mountain area are not very fertile and full of rocks and stone. Thus,
agriculture is not very easy.
• Transportation in mountain is also difficult.
• It is difficult to find flat lands on the mountain to build houses easily.
