Lesson Title: Identifying the value of coins and counting coins
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Recognize and distinguish between different coins including pennies, nickels, dimes and
quarters.
Write the value of different coins using the ¢ symbol
Count coins
State Standards:
1.MDA.6 Identify a penny, nickel, dime and quarter and write the coin values using a ȼ symbol.
Context:
This is a grade 1 lesson learning about identifying the value of coins. Understanding the
value of coins is an essential math skill. Learning to recognize and count different
denominations which is a fundamental skill for understanding addition, subtraction, and
more complex mathematical concepts later on. Recognizing and counting coins also
involves problem solving skills. Children learn to distinguish which combination of coins
can be used to make a specific amount which requires logical thinking and reasoning. In
the previous lesson students learned the different number values. In the next lesson they
will learn how to apply the coin values to real life and use word problems to do so.
Data:
Students will be grouped in 4’s or 5’s depending on the number of students. Students will
be grouped based on the previous class lessons exit ticket data identifying different
numbers and will be placed into 3 homogenous groups based on their knowledge from
the lesson.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
I will start the lesson by asking students what they know about coins and money. We will review
numbers and the value of a dollar. I will than use a Smart Board Lesson to go over each coin and
their value. During the lesson I will have the student repeat back to me the names of coins and
the value they are worth. I will than play a song about coins. After this I will explain each station
to the students, then will assign them their groups. I will give each group a different coin and that
will tell them which group they will go to first. The group that gets a penny will go to
independent digital, group with a nickel will go to collaborative, and the group with a quarter
will go to teacher directed. When get group gets settled at their section, I will go over to each
group to make sure they understand what is expected of them and that they know how to do the
work assigned.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes):
In this part of the lesson, I will ask the students what they know about coins and if they need
more explaining. After talking about coins, we will use plastic coins to identify the value of each
coin and their names. We will than play a game on the smart board that gives an item with a
dollar or cent amount and students will identify the amount and drag the correct amount of
money to the “pay here” area. This will show that they know the coin amount and show how to
count the coins together.
Collaborative (15 minutes):
In the groups students will pair up to work on these selected worksheets The worksheet should
be easy to understand which includes sorting coins and counting coins. Working in pairs they can
give feedback to each other and overall, just help each other. After they complete the worksheets,
they then can go on their iPads and work on the Counting Coins app still while in pairs. This app
has a lot of different options for counting coins which includes match the value, make the total,
how many cents? and show values.
Independent Digital (15 minutes):
During this portion of the lesson students will go to ABCYa and go to the Learn to Count
Money. Once the students are finished, they can watch this music video called The Money Song |
Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter after they watch the video with the rest of the time they can go on
the iPad and play the game Money Fun. During this game students will continue to learn about
coins and practice counting the money and making the amount with coins.
Closure ( 20 minutes):
At the end of the lesson all of the students will play a Kahoot game about counting coins. While
the students are pulling up the Kahoot I will walk around and collect all the worksheets that were
completed earlier. They will use their iPads to play the game. After the game is done, I can get a
good understanding of who understood the topic of the day and who are struggling that can use
more help. The top 3 people of the Kahoot game will get a prize. After the Kahoot is done we
will do an exit ticket with 5 questions so I can grade them and get a good understand of what
some students are struggling on.
Rationale
Counting Coins Smart Board Lesson:

This lesson is interactive and provide students with an easy and simple understanding off the
lesson that will be taught throughout the stations. The lesson provides examples and explanations
of coins and their values. During the lesson there is a short video clip explaining the values and
the different combinations that coins make.
Smart Board Game

This activity students will practice using the coins to buy items at a store. Doing this on the
Smart board gives students the chance to use something else other than their iPads. Also its
interactive and students can do it together instead of individually.
Counting Coins App

This activity allows students to use one app with many different options. Counting Coins lets
students practice working with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. In the app you can play
four different games those include Match the Value: try to make the same value as the coins
shown using different combination of coins, Make the Total: Use coins to make the total shown,
Show Values: Drag any number of coins and show or hide the value.
ABCYa Learn to Count Money

This piece of multimedia is a game and shows how to count money. This supports students
learning by providing an online tool that helps practice learning how to coin money. This game
is free which is a plus. It is also educational and fun so it will help the students occupied and still
learning,
Kahoot game
Kahoot is a great game to play, it also can be used a quizzing tool. I can create my own kahoot to
know that all the question go along with my lesson plan. The game can act as a quiz, so I know
what students understand the material and want students struggled with it. While the game ranks
the students it can motivate the students to pay attention and get on the leader board.
The Money Song

This song is a great way to review the beginning of the lesson so students can understand the
value of coins. Songs can be a great way for students to remember lesson better.
