Summary of the Experiment
Introduction
This lab report focuses on the measurement and demonstration of
capacitive phase shift in AC circuits. It explores the phenomenon of
phase shift between circuit voltage and current caused by the presence of
capacitance. Additionally, the report examines the concept of negative
power associated with reactive power in AC circuits and its
manifestation in the instantaneous power waveform.
Objectives
After completing this lab:
1. The student will be able to measure and quantify the capacitive
phase shift between voltage and current in an AC circuit.
Discussion
Phase Shift Due to Capacitance: Capacitors introduce a phase shift between voltage and current in AC
circuits as they resist changes in voltage, causing voltage to lag behind current by 90°.
Capacitive Current Behavior: Capacitors exhibit zero current at voltage minima and maximum current at
voltage zero crossings due to their charging and discharging processes, resulting in the observed 90°
phase shift.
Instantaneous Power Waveform: Capacitive circuits yield an instantaneous power waveform with both
positive and negative values, indicating power return to the source, resulting in zero average power over
a complete period.

Discussion of Results
Phasor analysis conducted with a phasor analyzer confirms the expected 90-degree phase shift between
voltage and current in the capacitive circuit.
Power Verification:
Oscilloscope readings validate the theoretical expectation of zero average power by demonstrating no
net power dissipation over a complete period in the capacitive circuit.
Conclusion
This lab provided valuable hands-on experience and deepened
understanding of the behavior of capacitors in AC circuits, contributing
to a comprehensive understanding of electrical principles.
