Executive summery
This internship report is about my internship time in the CBE Emdibir branch. Detailed and well
prepared document on things I have learnt in the past 2 months and the problems I have
encountered in this specific period of time.it also contains the companies background history,
mission and services.
My time at the company was one of the best experiences of my life. It gives me a chance to meet
a great people s most experienced network engineers and good peoples on top of that. Beside the
academically knowledge I gain this time also made me a better person a lot better than I was
before I attend this internship program. It helps me to acquire social skills.
This internship program give me for developing skill and to get the sight of what it looks like out
of the classroom or in the real world. The knowledge can be related to what we have been
learning in the class room throughout this three years and it also can be outside of the courses
we have taken because some knowledge cannot be gained from learning in the universities.
There are a lot of practical skill that a student gain from this internship program may be the
experiences gain from by working with coworker.

Chapter I
1.Introduction
Throughout my internship, I had the privilege of working on project that not only expanded my
knowledge and skills but also provided me with a valuable hands on experience. This program
allowed me to contribute to the goals and initiative of the organizations. While also allowing me
to grow both personally and professionally. In this, will provide an overview of the project I
worked on during my internship, highlighting the objective, methodologies, challenges, and
achievements I encountered along way.
Banking is one of the fastest growing industries in Ethiopia in the recent years. As the people’s
awareness about saving and digital marketing increase all over the country. The commercial bank
of Ethiopia is one of the leading banks in the country now a day s.
apply their theoretical knowledge in real world environment. Students will also develop skills
The scope of my internship program is trying to understand and arrange the complex networking
infrastructure in many sectors, specifically in the banking area. How the banks system organized,
how the LAN structure is installed and maintenance of different bank tools like ATM.
1
1.3 Background OF commercial bank of Ethiopia
The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) is the largest commercial bank in Ethiopia. As of June
2015, it had about 303.6 billion Birr in assets and held approximately 67% of deposits and about
53% of all bank loans in the country. The bank has around 22,908 employees, who staff its
headquarters and its over 1000+ branches positioned in the main cities and regional towns. The
latter include 120 branches in the national capital Adiss Abeba. Its banking network has reached
online 783 branches.
The bank also operates two branches in South Sudan, and is contemplating opening re-opening a
branch in Djibouti, and opening branches in Dubai and Washington, DC, all to serve the
Ethiopian diaspora.
The bank was under the State Bank of Ethiopia, which was founded in 1942. That led the way for
CBE to be founded separately in 1963, before its unification with the back then, Addis Ababa
Bank in 1974.
It has reached 15 districts as of June 30, 2019. And have 1444 branches. One of the branch is
Emdibir, in which I complete my internship program.it is under Hosaena destrict .

Chapter 2
Specific job information or role responsiblity
During my internship period I have been working in networking section of the company because
I had a plan to learn the practical design, installation and implementation of network devices. On
my first day they gave me the option to choose which department to join so my immediate
response was networking so they gave me an appointment for the next day to setup a place for
me in the office along with the company’s supervisor.
In networking department most of the time many of the work is done on computer by network
administrator and this tasks are:
1. Giving a user access to different VLAN
2. When the internet goes most of the time the problem occurs on the side of the internet
3. service provider therefore the problem is reported to the service provider then fixed.
4. When a new user joins a certain office to allow a port the network admin changes the
port to manually up.
Therefore from the above observation to go in person and to fix the problem we need to follow
this steps:
1. First we ask the client about what they want if they are enquiring for a new service or for
2. a fix of network failure.
3. After that we need to identify what the real issues is like if it is a question related to
4. ports, internet connectivity and LAN connectivity.
5. If the problem needs our physical engagement we then gather our networking tools in
6. consideration of the extent this problem could be handled.
7. When we reach at the site we first make a mere guess and test for solution if that doesn’t
8. work then we need to go through different technical procedure in network maintenance.
9. Finally after fixing the problem we test the connectivity and some other basic function of
10. the networks when it fulfills that then our work is done.
16
2.3 Networking in bank
Networking in the banking sector is like oxygen to us I mean as we don’t live with-out oxygen
it’s almost impossible to use bank system without networking. Every action and service need
communication from each side, the customer and service provider.
During my time in the company, I have gained valuable experience and knowledge in many
aspects. Mainly on networking and some hardware maintenances and also some social and
management skills which you won’t learn in the class room.
Network refers to the set of devices (nodes) connected by communication links. A node can be a
computer, printer, or any other device capable of sending and/or receiving data generated by
other devices on the network. A network is categories into three types such as Local Area
Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN). And in
my time at my internship, I had an opportunity to Familiarized with the Local Area Network.
Local area networks, generally called LANs, are privately-owned networks. They provide a
useful way of sharing resources between end users. The resources such as printers, file servers,
scanners, and internet are easily sharable among other connected computers in a network
• A typical Wi-Fi LAN operates one or more wireless access points that devices within
coverage area connect to. These access points, manage network traffic which is flowing
to and from the connected devices. In our home, school, office’s LAN, wireless
broadband routers perform the functions of an access point.
16
• A typical Ethernet LAN consisting of an Ethernet cable to which all the machines are
attached, like in our school labs, number of computers connected to each other through
the common Ethernet cable.
• Though Ethernet and Wi-Fi are usually used in most home and office-based Local area
networks, because of both the low cost and speed requirements, you can also set up a
LAN with fiber optics which is more costly and provide better communication speed
compared to Ethernet LAN or Wi -fi LAN.
• Traditional LANs run at speeds of 10 to 100 Mbps (but now much higher speeds can be
achieved) but newer LANs operate at up to 10 GBP speed.
2. Their Size
LANs are restricted in size; a local network can contain anywhere from one or two devices up to
a thousand devices. Some devices like printers, scanners, and other servers stay permanently with
the LAN while mobile devices like computers, laptops, and phones may connect and disconnect
from the network at various times.
LAN size depends on the transmission technology used in a network. For example, the size of Wi
fi LAN can be the actual coverage area of the wireless broadband routers whereas the size of an
Ethernet LAN can be up to the size of the cable. In both cases, though, Local Area Networks can
be extended to cover much larger distances if required, by connecting together multiple access
points or cables through a switch or hub. The size of Local area networks is smaller than the
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN).
2. Software Applications Sharing: In a Local Area Network, it is easy to use the same
software in a number of computers connected to a network instead of purchasing the
separately licensed software for each client a network.
3. Easy and Cheap Communication: Data and messages can easily be shared with the
other computer connected to the network.
16
4. Data Security: Since data is stored on the server computer, it will be easy to manage data
at only one place and the data will be more secure too.
5. Internet Sharing: Local Area Network provides the facility to share a single internet
connection among all the LAN users. In school labs and internet Cafes, single internet
connection is used to provide internet to all connected computers.
The building receives two cables straight from Ethio telecom. One for internet and the other for
data for bank which is used for banking technology. Which grant the user to log in to CBE
accounts, making transaction, ATM monitoring, Network monitoring and so many functions of
the bank. Each of the company’s workers will have 2 personal computers in their desk, on which
is connected to switch 1 and the other connected to switch 2.
The computer which is connected to switch 1 will allow you to access the internet and do all the
stuffs you want like watching you tube videos, using social media or may be watching movies on
the other hand the other computer which is connected to the outlet which have the connecter that
have a cable straight from switch 2 will only allow you to access some of the bank networks.
It’s very secure. It allows you only to login in to your CBE accounts, gives you privilege as A
CBE stuff member and do things like router configuration, switch configuration, accessing your
CBE mail account and so many of bank’s service which are allowed to specific bank workers.
The second floors of the building each have a network rack. It is the sample of the network rack
which you will find in the buildings first floor. The racks in other floors only have switches
which they will receive data from the router and modem in the first floor. The switch which will
accept data form the switch 1 of first floor will only help you to access the internet on the other
hand the switch which is connected to switch 2 of first floor will help you to access the banks
data.
Differentiating the two networks, the internet network and the bank network has done a good
favour for the bank instead of security and privacy.
16
2.8 ATM system Controlling
I have a chance to see how the bank’s ATM machines are being controlled and how they fix them
when there is a failure. Most of the time the ATM machine catch a failure when one of the
following cases happen
The ATM room is responsible when one of these cases happened and when the ATM will be out
of service. The out of service ATMS will show a red light during a pinging process.
1. Card Reader.
2. Keypad.
3. Display screen.
4. Speaker.
16
2.9 Computer Hardware Maintenance
Since the room is networking and hardware maintenance it is the one responsible when the
computer device needs to be repaired. I have a chance to see and experience when some of these
devices where repaired and being back to their good state. Here are some of the hardware
maintain ace that I’ve seen during my time there; -
• Replacing RAM
• Replacing damaged hard disk
• cleaning computer hardware component using blower
Troubleshooting RAM
The RAM is in essence the active workspace of the computer, in which your programs run and
your content is created.
If your system’s RAM is not working correctly, then you will likely see one of several symptoms
when using your computer.
• Random Application Crashes: If programs randomly quit unexpectedly, and the generated
crash report shows different potential reasons for the crash, this may indicate bad memory.
• Random Pauses
• Data corruption
• Computer cannot boot
If the computer shows Random access memory faulty symptoms, we solved by replacing the
RAM.
16
The first thing to do is run through some inspection of the computer to see if this is indeed a
drive failure. Here is a basic checklist. Now, if the PC was working fine and then just stopped
working, chances are these items are not the case.

CHAPTER 3
ACCOMPLISHMENT
NETWORKING TOOLS
This was my first assignment given for me by my supervisor to identify and understand all the
tool and equipment used in the networking world. This take help me to know and discover all the
device that I learn my networking course.
Those tools are software or hardware device or computer together to share resource and
communicate with each other. Networking tools help in creating a network infrastructure that
enable data sharing, internet connectivity, and remote access to resource.
In a bank system networking tools are essential for maintaining a secure and reliable network
infrastructure. Some of the networking tools used in a bank system are:
1. Router: Router are used to connect different networks together and provide a secure and
reliable connection between them. In bank system, router are used to connect different
branch or departments within the bank and allow them to communicate with each other.
3 Cable: in the bank system it used to connect routers and other network device can vary
depending on the specific network architecture and requirements. Common types of
cables used in bank include Ethernet..
The main difference between those three cable are what they used for. Ethernet cable are
used for short distance connection within LANs , Fiber optic cable are used for long
distance connections between different branch or data center. ,coaxial cables are used for
specialized application such as connecting ATM machine or other financial equipment.
Ethernet: those cable are made of copper wire and are used to transmit data over short
distance within a local area network. They are commonly used in offices, homes, and
other small scale networks. It come in different categories such as cat5, cat6, and cats7
which determine their speed and bandwidth capabilities.
There are three type of Ethernet cable that are mainly used in LAN structure:
16
Fiber optic cable: on the other hand use light to transmit data over long distances
at high speed. They are made of glass or plastic fibers that are highly resistant to
interface and can transmit data over longer distance than copper cables.
Design: An optical fiber consists of a core and a cladding, chosen for their total
internal reflection due to the difference in refractive index between the two. In
real optical fibers, the cladding is usually covered with a layer of acrylate or
polyimide polymer.
16
Figure 3.5 coaxial cable
Twisted Pair Cable: Twisted pair is a copper wire cable in which two insulated
copper wires are twisted around each other to reduce interference or crosstalk. It
uses 10BASE-T, 100BASE-T, and some other newer ethernet variants. It uses
RJ-45 connectors.
Design: A twisted pair cable usually contains two or more conducting wires
either shielded by an insulator or not and, further these twisted pairs of wires are
coated for protection from any damage.
4 cable taster: is a tool used to verify the continuity and quality of network cable. It can
identify wiring faults, and short circuits in cable, and can be used to test Ethernet,
coaxial, and other type of cable.
16
Figure 3.8 cable taster
5 cable crimper: is a device to conjoin two pieces of metal by deforming one or both of
them in a way that causes them to hold each other . It is used to peel cable cover and used
to cut cable with equal position. It is also used to add a connector to the end of a cable
Patch panel within LANs connect network computers to each other and to outside lines,
enabling the LANs to connect to the internet or other wide area networks.

Chapter 4
Reflection
The 2 months that I’ve spent in the company definitely made me better as a person. The major
benefits of my internship were developing my practical skills and operating on real devices. I get
access to many networking devices and equipment, experiencing the real networking
environment and involving in some of the actions. Thanks to the nonstop help of the supervisor, I
come out as a better network engineer than I were when I step my foot to the office.
16
CHAPTER 5
CONCLUTION
The work experience I encountered during the intern ship allowed me to develop my skills on
networking environment. However, during this two month the overall experience was positive
and I am hoping that I am going to learn more in the rest of my career and everything I learned
will be useful in my future career in this filed In conclusion the inter ship vary useful .I have
found out my strength and weaknesses are; I gained new knowledge and skill and met many new
people. Also I develop discipline to learn a lot of platform in the future.
Although my time at the intern ship was full of positive things there was some problems that I
face during my internship program. I will list them below.
16
➢ Security issue
I would say I have achieved all things I planned to achieve before I start my internship program.
Generally, the objective of internship is to change the theoretical knowledge into practical or into
real world life aspects and to solve problems. Beside to accomplish the general objective of the
internship.
I would like to thank the University for this great opportunity .
RECOMEDATION
This internship program offers a lot of advantages to the students, as mentioned above, for
instance, it helped me to develop not only practical experience but also theoretical knowledge
related to my academic, my social skills and career goals. Because of this and all the listed
advantages above I would like to recommend our university to keep giving this great chance for
the students.
And also, I recommend that there should be awareness creation program for companies to let
them know about internship program and about different departments of the university. I think
these will help students to get a lot of organizations to work for in internship period and easy
internship placement process.
CBE is a well-established agency. Therefore, it is very tough to recommend on any aspect of the
agency. The internship program holds benefits to the field supervisor and hosting company by
providing motivated workers at no or relatively small cost to an organization and furnishing the
opportunity to train possible future employees for the organization.
16
Participating in internship program allows the field supervisor and organization to maintain a
working relationship with the university in which I am enrolled. In several cases, special projects
can be accomplished more inexpensively by using student expertise
