SECTION A(60Marks)
Answer all question in this section.
1. (𝑎) Three bells ring at interval of 20, 25, and 30 minutes. If all of them ring together at
10:55am, when will they ring together?
(𝑏) Janet Cleopa Mafuru planted trees on each side of the road to her house, the
road is 750 metres long and the trees are 5metres apart. How many trees are
there?

3. In a certain school there are 150 students who studying both Basic mathematics
and Additional mathematics. School regulations requires that an Additional
mathematics students must come from Basic mathematics class. In the school,
there 110 students do not study Basic Mathematics. If only 200 students study
Basic Mathematics but not Additional Mathematics; by using a Venn diagram
how many students:
i. Are in the school?
ii. Study either Basic Mathematics or Additional Mathematics?
iii. Do not study Additional Mathematics?
4. (𝑎) If the line joining the points A (𝑘, 8 + 2𝑘) and B (2𝑘, 5) has a gradient of −5.Find
the value of 𝑘.

(𝑏) A line whose gradient is has the 𝑥 intercept of −5. Find the equation of the line

in the form of 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑐, where m and c are constants.
(𝑏) The numbers 𝑥, 𝑦, and 𝑧 are directly proportional by the numbers 2, 3, and 4. If
𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 2 − 𝑧 2 = 600, find the value of
i. The constant of proportionality.

7. (𝑎) An article was sold for shs.160,000 at a profit of 45%. find the buying price of the
article.
(𝑏) A car which costs shs.10,500,000 was sold at 25% loss. What was the selling
price?
8. (𝑎) The temperature at a mid-day is 210 c, and it fall by 40 c each hour. Find the
temperature at the next twenty-four hours.
(𝑏) A man sent a message to four of his friends, and each of them then sent the same
message to another four friends and so on. Find the number of people who got
the message the sixth time it was sent given that each person received the
message only one.
9. (𝑎) A ladder on the ground leans against a vertical wall who’s the height is 6 metres.
The ground distance between the ladder and the wall is 8 metres.
i. Draw a diagram to represent this information.
ii. Using the diagram in part (i), find the length of the ladder.
(𝑏) The dimensions of a rectangular garden are 163 metres long and 109 metres wide,
if the canal cuts the garden diagonally. Find the measures in degrees made by a
canal and the edges.
10. (𝑎) Banyamlenge is three years older than his brother Matugwakwaruza. Three years
to come,the product of their ages is 130 years. Formulating the quadratic equation
representing this information, Hence, by using quadratic formula find their
present ages.
(𝑏) The ages of the two people differ by 7. If the product of their ages is 60,
formulating the quadratic equation, hence by using the splitting middle term
method find the ages.

(𝑎) Prepare the frequency distribution using the information: number of
classes=6; size of each class=100 and the lower-class limit of the class

(𝑏) By using the information in 11(a) above, find the following

12. (𝑎) A linear function is such that 𝑓(2) = 11, 𝑓(−3) = −4. Find 𝑓 −1 (4).
13. (𝑎) Re-write the 𝑓(𝑥) = 8 − 6𝑥 − 4𝑥 2 in the form of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎(𝑥 + 𝑏)2 + 𝑐, where
𝑎, 𝑏 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐 are constants and hence find the value of 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐.
