PLACE VALUE AND FACE VALUE

A Place value describes the position or place of a digit in a given number. Face value of a digit describes the value of the digit
itself. Each digit of the number has a value depending on its place...... Example: The place value of digit 8 in 5,831 = 8 × 100 = 800
whereas the face value is 8.
Q.1 Find the place value and face value of all the digits of the number 79,56,483
Digit Place Value Face Value
7 7 x 1000000= 7000000 7
9 9 x 100000 = 900000 9
5 5 x 10000 = 50000 5
6 6 x 1000 = 6000 6
4 4 x 100 = 400 4
8 8 x 10 = 80 8
3 3x1=3 3
Q.2. Find the sum of face value and place value of 9 in the number 7,96,541
Place value of 9 = 90000
Face Value of 9 = 9
Sum = 90000 + 9 = 90009

Q.3. Which digits have the same place value and face values in the number 7,80,254
Ans. 0 and 4(digit at ones place)

Q.4 . Find the difference in the place value’s of two 3’s in the number 7,35,930
735930
Place values = 30000 and 30
Difference = 30000 – 30 = 29970
Predecessor and Successor
Predecessor refers to the previous term of a particular term. In order to find a predecessor, one must subtract one from the
particular given number. ( - 1)
Successor refers to the next term of a particular term. In order to find the successor of a whole number, one must add one
to the particular given number. ( + 1)
Q.1 Find the predecessor and successor of given numbers
S.No Number Predecessor (-1) Successor (+1)
A 29,45,671 29,45,670 29,45,672
B 34,18,999 34,18,998 34,19,000
C 19,01,040 19,01,039 19,01,041
D 46,71,987 46,71,986 46,71,988

Q.2. Find the predecessor of smallest 7 digit number and write its number name as per international system of
numeration
Smallest 7 digit number = 1,000,000
Predecessor = 1000000 – 1 = 999,999 Nine hundred ninety nine thousands nine hundred ninety nine

Q.3. Find the successor of largest 6 digit number and write its number name as per Indian system of numeration

Largest 6 digit number = 9,99,999

Successor = 999999 + 1 =10,00,000 [Ten Lakhs]
EXPANDED FORM OF 7 DIGIT NUMBERS

EXPANDED FORM CAN BE WRITTEN IN THREE WAYS

1. In Words
2. Multiplying face value by the places
3. Adding the place values
Q.1 Write the expanded form/ notation of the given numbers :( three ways )
a) 103,987 (INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF NUMERATION)

= 1 hundred thousand + 0 ten thousand + 3 thousand+ 9 hundred + 8 tens

+ 7 ones
= 1 x 100,000 + 0 x 10,000 + 3 x 1000 + 9 x 100 + 8 x 10 + 7 x 1
= 100, 000 + 3000 + 900 + 80 + 7
b) 73,45,098 (INDIAN SYSTEM OF NUMERATION)
= 7 ten lakhs + 3 lakhs + 4 ten thousands + 5 thousands + 0 hundreds + 9 tens + 8 ones
= 7 x 10,00,000 + 3 x 1,00,000 + 4 x 10,000 + 5 x 1000 + 0 + 9 x 10 + 8 x1
= 70,00,000 + 3,00,000 + 40,000 + 5000 + 90 + 8
Q. 2 Write in short form / numeral :
a) 40,00,000 + 3,00,000 + 40,000 + 9000 + 200 + 40 +1 = 43,49,241
b) 50,000,000 + 5000 + 600 +1 = 50,005,601
c) 9 million + 6 ten thousand + 4 tens + 8 ones = 9,060,048
d) 6 x 10,00,000 + 5 x 1,00,000 + 4 x 10 + 5 x 1 = 65,00,045
