AVERAGES

Average also known as arithmetic mean, is basically the

ratio of sum of the terms to the number of terms.
Numerically the average can be found as:
Sum of Items
Average = Number of Items

Example 1. Find the average of 15,21,33,37,39

Sol. Average = (15+21+33+37+39)/5 = 145/5 = 29
Note: When the difference between all the terms is same,
then average is equal to (n+1)/2th term if 'n' is odd and
equal to the average of n/2th and (n/2 + 1)th term when
‘n’ is even, where n is the total number of terms.
Example 2. Find average of 53,57,61,65,69
Sol. Here difference between the terms is same and
number of terms are 5 so average will be (5+1)/2 = 3 rd
term which is 61. So average is 61
Example 3. Find the average of 112,132,152,172,192,212
Sol. Here difference between the terms is constant and
number of terms are 6. So the average will be the
average of (6/2)=3rd and (6/2+1)=4th terms.
So Average = (152 + 172)/2 = 162.

1
Important facts
If each number is increased/decreased by a certain
quantity x, then the average also increases or decreases
by the same quantity.
If each number is multiplied/ divided by a certain
quantity x, then the average also gets multiplied or
divided by the same quantity.
If the same value is added to half of the quantities and
the same value is subtracted from other half quantities
then there will not be any change in the final value of the
average.
Weighted mean/average
The weighted arithmetic mean, usually denoted by

Where x1, x2, x3, …, xn are averages and w1, w2, w3, .., wn
are their respective weightages
Example 4. In a class of 30 boys and 20 girls, the average
heights of the two groups of boys and girls are 160 cm
and 120 cm respectively. Find the average height of the
class.

2
Sol. Total height of boys = N1H1 = 30 × 160 = 4800
Total height of girls = N2H2 = 20 × 120 = 2400
Average of class = (N1H1 + N2H2)/(N1+N2) =
(4800+2400)/(30+20) = 144 cm.
Average speed: If a man covers some journey from A to B
at u km/hr. and returns back to A from B with uniform
speed of v km/hr., then the average speed during the
whole journey is 2uv km/hr
uv

More Solved Examples

1. Find the average of first three prime numbers.
Sol. First three prime numbers are 2, 3 and 5.
2+3+5 10
Their average is 3

3
= 3.33.

2. Find the average of 8, 11, 14, 17 and 20.

Sol. The sum of the items are 8 + 11 + 14 + 17 + 20.
70
Average = 5
= 14.

3. Find the average of 18, 21, 24, 27 & 30.

Sol. Here in this question, the difference between all the
items is same and the total number of terms are 5
which is odd, therefore average would be equal to

3
(n + 1)/2th term i.e. (5+1)/2 = 3rd term or 24 would
be average of these five items.
4. The average of seven consecutive numbers is 47.
Find the smallest of these numbers.
Sol. As the numbers given are consecutive, their
difference would always be equal. Average would
be equal to (7+1)  2 item means the 4th item,
which is given to be 47. This means 47 is the 4th
number, 46 is the 3rd number, 45 is the 2nd number,
44 is the 1st and the smallest number.
5. If a man goes from A to B at a speed of 20 km/hr
and returns back at 30 km/hr, find his average
speed.
2  20  30
Sol. Average speed = 20  30
= 24 km/hr.

6. The average temperature for Monday, Tuesday and

Wednesday was 39.8C. The average for Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday was 40.8C. If the
temperature on Monday be 38C, find the
temperature on Thursday.
Sol. In this question, the sum of three days = Monday+
Tue + Wed = 39.8 × 3 = 119.4------(i)

4
Similarly Tuesday + Wednesday + Thursday = 40.8
× 3 = 122.4------(ii)
Now (ii) –(i) => Thursday – Monday = 3.
Now the temperature of Monday is given to be 38
degrees, so the temperature on Thursday will be
= 38+3 = 41o
7. Average of 10 numbers is 20. If each number is
multiplied by 5, then find the new average of the
numbers.
1. 100 2. 25 3.15 4. 105
Sol. If each number is multiplied by 5 then new average
would also be 5 times the old average. So new
average will be 20 × 5 = 100. So answer is option 1.
8. Average of a set of three numbers is 25. Each
number is first increased by 5 and then divided by
3. Find the new average?
1. 10 2. 15 3.20 4. 25
Sol. New average = (old average + 5)/3 => (25 +5)/3 =
10.

5
9. Average age of a group of 16 men is 50 years. Eight
new men with average age of 65 years are added to
the group. Find the average age of the new group.
Sol. Combined average = (N1 X1 + N2X2)/(N1+N2) = (16 ×
50 + 8 × 65)/(16+8) = 55 yrs.
10. The average of 15 numbers is 53 and if the 15th
number is 137, then find the average of the
remaining 14 numbers.
Sol. Sum of 15 numbers = 15 × 53 = 795
Sum of 14 numbers = 795 – 137 = 658
Average of 14 numbers = 658/14 = 47.
