PLC2 to PLC5 Conversion Software
Release 1.1

These release notes for the PLC-2 to PLC-5 Conversion Software Release
1.1 describe:
installing Release 1.1 of the PLC-2 to PLC-5 Conversion Software
(6200-2CV5)
new features for Release 1.1
restrictions to follow when you use Release 1.1
information that is in addition to the PLC-2 to PLC-5 Conversion
Software User Manual (publication 6300-6.5.1)

Installing the Software A new installation procedure makes installing the 2CV5 software easier
and quicker to install. This is the same installation procedure you use to
install your PLC-2 and PLC-5 Programming Software.
The following installation procedure assumes that you have 6200-2CV5
software (3 1/2” diskettes). However, this procedure also applies if you are
installing 6210-2CV5 (5 1/4” diskettes).
Important: Remove any previous versions of the software before
installing the new version. For information about removing software, see
“Removing the Software” on page 10 of these Release Notes.
To install the 2CV5 software, do the following:

1. Insert the disk labeled “Disk 1 of n” into the appropriate disk drive
(either drive A or drive B).

Where n is equal to the total number of disks.

2. If necessary, change the drive specifier to the appropriate drive (either

drive A or drive B).

3. At the DOS prompt (either A> or B>), type:

INSTALL x [Enter]

Replace the x with the hard drive where you want to install the
software (typically C).

Specifying Other Software Packages through the Smart Menu

If you use the Smart Menu to start other software packages, you might
have to specify a batch file as the application. You need this batch file
if the other software package is executed from a different directory than
the Smart Menu directory. This batch file should change the directory to
where the software is installed and then start the software form there.
For example, you need a batch file to start 2CV5 from the Smart Menu.
This batch file is called 2CV5_SM.BAT and is automatically installed in
the \IPDS\ATTACH\2CV5 directory.

screen, on page 4), and removes the conversion software.

New Features The following list summarizes the changes for the PLC-2 to PLC-5
Conversion Software Release 1.1:

Unreferenced Jump Labels

Unreferenced JUMP labels are now converted rather than discarded. See
page 3-5 in your PLC-2 to PLC-5 Conversion Software User’s Manual
(publication 6300-6.5.1).

11
Software Release Notes
PLC2 to PLC5 Conversion Software
Release 1.1

Programs with Greater than 32 Labels

If there are more than 32 labels, these labels are converted to an ERI. Any
instruction referencing such a label is changed to an ERO. This is due to
the PLC-5’s limitation of 32 labels (0-31).

Two Labels in Series

Two labels in series caused Release 1.0 of the 2CV5 to abort the
conversion. In Release 1.1, the extra label is converted to an ERI and the
software will not abort during conversion.

Directory Parameter
If the working directory parameter is used when executing 2CV5, you no
longer need to include a back slash as the last character. See page 6-2 in
your PLC-2 to PLC-5 Conversion Software User’s Manual (publication
6300-6.5.1).

Report Header
Each of the conversion reports now includes the project filename in the
report header.

Display Reports
In Release 1.0, the user could stop viewing a report by pressing [Ctrl-C].
In Release 1.1, when you view a report, you are prompted at the bottom of
the screen with:
More [Y/N]:
Pressing [N] has the same effect as the [Ctrl-C] did in Release 1.0.

Using [Ctrl-C] and [Ctrl-Break]

In Release 1.0, [Ctrl-C] stopped the software. Both [Ctrl-C] and
[Ctrl-Break] have been disabled in Release 1.1.

Using this Release When you use Release 1.1 of the conversion software, keep the following
anomalies in mind:

Free Disk Space Limit

You must have more than 20K bytes of free disk space on your hard drive
during any phase of the PLC-2 to PLC-5 conversion program. If the free
disk space level becomes less than 20K bytes during a write to file

12
Software Release Notes
PLC2 to PLC5 Conversion Software
Release 1.1

operation, the software ends the current conversion phase and displays the
following message:
System Error: Insufficient disk space

GET Instructions
There are a couple of restrictions for GET instructions:
GET instructions that are not part of a GET-PUT or GET-LIMIT, or any
other math operation, will be discarded. For example, if you have this
separate GET instruction:
111 030 011
[] [G] ()
00 17 00

This GET does not do anything on the rung except display the value in
word 030. This type of instruction is not supported by the PLC-5 and
thus the conversion discards it.
GET instructions in the PLC-2 display only the lower 12 bits of 16 bits
in BCD format. Since the word may have any combination of bits, the
lower 4 bits could be all 1’s and result in a hex value of F. It is possible
to have a GET display with a value of 1DF, or any other hex value.
2CV5 issues a warning message saying:

WARNING: Image file error, invalid BCD file (1DF) encountered.

This value is not invalid for the PLC-2. The converter does the
conversion on this value to binary and displays it as binary in the PLC-5
ladder logic. The warning is given because PLC-2 programs typically
work on BCD values.

EAF Instructions
2CV5 does not convert PLC-2 EAF instructions. EAF instructions are
assigned an address in the PLC-5 but the EAF shows an ERO in the PLC-5
logic.

Report Files
Report files are automatically created with page lengths of 66. The user
cannot change the page length of a report.

WriteProtected Disks
Do not use write-protected disks. If you specify a write-protected disk as
the working directory when you call the converter, the converter attempts
to write to the disk and displays the following error message:

13
Software Release Notes
PLC2 to PLC5 Conversion Software
Release 1.1

Write protect error writing drive X

Abort, Retry, Ignore?

COM2 Port
Do not use the COM2 port on 80386 computers.

User Assignment File

Do not use the User Assignment File (.USR) when converting PLC-2
programs. This file does not work the way it is described in chapter 9 of
your 2CV5 User’s Manual (publication 6300-6.5.1). The User Assignment
File is supposed to let you:
Reserve certain PLC-5 data table locations for future use. The
conversion does not assign addresses to those data table locations
specified with the reserve format in the .USR file.
Specify certain correspondences between PLC-2 and PLC-5 addresses.
You can assign a specific PLC-2 address to a PLC-5 address.
If you try to use the User Assignment File, the conversion software
displays the following message during the Address Assignment phase:
SYSTEM ERROR: Errors were detected in the user-assignment file.
INFO: Address Assignment has terminated with an error.
If you need to reassign PLC-5 addresses, wait until the conversion is
finished (without using the .USR file). Then use the search and replace
function of the PLC-5 Programming Software to change addresses.

Additional Information The following information is in addition to the PLC-2 to PLC-5

Conversion Software User’s Manual (publication 6300-6.5.1).

PRINT Command
2CV5 software relies on the DOS external command PRINT to print
reports. Ensure that this file (PRINT.COM or PRINT.EXE) exists
and its home directory is included in the PATH statement in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Usually the PRINT command is located in a
subdirectory with other DOS utility programs. It is highly recommended
that PRINT.COM or PRINT.EXE is loaded before starting the 2CV5
software. By doing so, memory fragmentation will be minimized. In
Release 1.1, using the batch file 2CV5_SM.BAT will automatically load
PRINT.COM or PRINT.EXE.
The first time you run the conversion software, the system prompts for:
Name of the list device [PRN:]

14
Software Release Notes
PLC2 to PLC5 Conversion Software
Release 1.1

Enter LPT1: for a parallel printer, or enter COM1: for a serial printer.

Copying a Processor Memory File to the Archive Directory

You have the option of copying the processor memory file to the archive
directory after the code generation phase. If you respond [Y] to this option,
the software tries to copy the file to the \IPDS\ARCH\PLC5 directory. You
do not have an option to choose a different directory; this is the default
PLC-5 directory for storing program files.

ABMENU Screen
A batch file, 2CV5_SM.BAT, is installed into the \IPDS\CONVERT\2CV5
directory with the other files. ABMENU is automatically set up to call
2CV5 software via the 2CV5_SM.BAT file.
When 2CV5 converter is installed, it is automatically installed on the
second page of ABMENU. The second page is LEVEL 1. ABMENU
comes up with LEVEL 0. To go to LEVEL 1, press [PageDown]. Press
[PageUp] to return to LEVEL 0.

SBR Instruction
The T3 and PLC-2A allow the creation of rungs that have input conditions
that precede a start of subroutine or end statement. These are invalid rungs
for the PLC-5. To resolve this, these input conditions are stripped when
the converter finds them.

Separate Executables
In Release 1.1, you cannot run any of the separate executables comprising
the 2CV5 software from the command line, with the exception of
2CV5.EXE. These programs can only be run through invocation of
2CV5_SM.BAT or 2CV5.EXE.
