3. appreciate the strength of the internet and the web in our current
situation.

Hook 2
In the previous lesson, you learned how to define and identify ICT and ICT
systems. In this module, let us continue by knowing the impact of ICT at home,
school and work. Also, we will discuss the internet and the web.

Not so long ago, lots of questions/problems usually came into our mind.

● How can I communicate with my friend?


● What device/technology should I use to solve this problem?
● How can I find my lost relative?

But now, these questions somehow don’t exist anymore. Why? It’s because of the
emerging technology that we are experiencing right now. We learn to appreciate
the impact of these technologies in our home, school and work.

What is the internet?

The beginning of the internet can be traced to 1969 when mainframe computers

placed in different parts of the United States were connected together. It was
exclusively used to assist communication between researchers.

Nowadays, the internet is mostly everywhere. The internet is often referred to as


the Information Superhighway. It is like a highway that connects you to millions
of other people and organizations.

Unlike usual highways that move people and things from one point to another,
the internet moves ideas and information.

What is the Web?

The web is a collection of different websites accessed through the internet. A


website is made up of related text, images, and other resources. Websites may
appear like newspaper articles or television programs or can be interactive in a
way that is unique to computers. (Internet Basics, n.d.)

Today, millions or even billions of users from every country in the world use the
internet and the web. What are they doing?

These are the most common uses of the internet and the web.

● Communicating – by far the most popular Internet activity. You can


exchange email, photos, and videos with your family and friends around the
world.

● Shopping – considered as one of the fastest growing Internet applications.
You can do window shopping, look for something you like and make
purchases.
● Searching – you can access some of the world’s largest libraries directly
from your computer or even find the latest local, national, and international
news.
● Education – e-learning is another rapidly emerging web application. You
can take classes on almost any subject you like.
● Entertainment – you can find music, movies, magazines, and computer
games.

But of course, the Internet and the Web will not be fully appreciated and prove
its impact at home, school and work without these technologies.

Alan Kay, an American computer scientist is one of many people whose work
has had a deep effect on our workplaces, our schools, and our homes. According
to him, “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”One of Alan Kay’s
inventions is called Dynabook, an early prototype for the modern personal
computer, combining features of a laptop computer, a tablet PC, and an e-book.
So, because of his work it makes our work easier and faster.

These are some of the impacts of ICT, the internet and the web. Because of this,
we can to experience the following:

At Home:

● Security (alarms and sensors)


● Communication (chat, video calls)
● Online shopping
● Online banking
● Playing online games
● E-Learning

At School:

● Research
● Computer-based training
● Games simulation
● Multimedia
● Virtual schools
● Security (alarms and sensors)

At work:

● Automated factory (computer-controlled machines)

● Automated office (paperless environment)
● Electronic cottage (work at home)
● World Wide Workers (technical support)
● Digital marketing

ICT is having an intense influence on the way we live and work, and somehow
it may challenge our beliefs and traditions. It is up to us on how we are going to
manage ourselves in using this technology.

ICT refers to different technologies that provide access to information through


telecommunications which includes the internet.

The Internet is often referred to as the Information Superhighway. It is like a
