Assignment 1
Assignment 1
01. A 500-kVA, 3-phase, 50-Hz transformer has a voltage ratio (line voltages) of 33/11-kV
and is delta/star connected. The resistances per phase are: high voltage 35 Ω, low voltage
0.876 Ω and the iron loss is 3050 W. Calculate the value of efficiency at full-load and one-
half of full load respectively (a) at unity p.f. and (b) 0.8 p.f
02. Identify the winding types in the Figure 1 which are used in DC machines and how do
these windings are differ from each other?
03. A 460-V, four-pole, 60-hp, 60-Hz, Y-connected three-phase induction motor develops
its full- load induced torque at 3.8 percent slip when operating at 60 Hz and 460 V. The
per-phase circuit model impedances of the motor are
R1 = 0.33 Ω XM = 30 Ω
X1 = 0.42 Ω X2 = 0.42 Ω
Mechanical, core, and stray losses may be neglected in this problem.
a. Find the value of the rotor resistance R2.
b. Find Maximum Torque τmax, Slip at τmax, smax, and the rotor speed at maximum
torque for this motor.
c. Find the starting torque of this motor.
04. A 120-V, 1/3-hp 60-Hz, four-pole, split-phase induction motor has the following
impedances:
R1 = 1.80 Ω X1 = 2.40 Ω XM = 60 Ω
R2 = 2.50 Ω X2 = 2.40 Ω
At a slip of 0.05, the motor’s rotational losses are 50 W. The rotational losses may be
assumed constant over the normal operating range of the motor. If the slip is 0.05, find
the following quantities for this motor:
a. Draw the equivalent circuit of the motor with Forward and Reverse parameter
b. Input power
c. Air-gap power
d. Converted Power Pconv
e. Pout
f. τind
g. τload
h. Overall motor efficiency
i. Stator power factor
05. A 75-kW, 3-φ, Y-connected, 50-Hz, 440-V cylindrical rotor synchronous motor
operates at rated condition with 0.8 p.f. leading. The motor efficiency excluding field
and stator losses, is 95% and XS = 2.5 Ω. Calculate,
