- Hardware Setup -

1. Plug HDMI cable into side of RPi device and ensure it is connected to a television/monitor.
2. Plug game controller into a USB port on the RPi (any of the 4 ports will work).
3. Plug in the power adapter (power port on RPi is located next to the HDMI port).

Note: Always plug in the power adapter last or else the device may not find the HDMI or controller,
after it is running.

4. The RPi should start, the power light should come on and the tv/monitor should display the
startup screens, give it a minute or so to fully boot up.
5. One the device is fully booted up, it should display the Favorites list of games.
6. The RPi should now be ready for play.

- Emulation Station Controls -

• At any time you can return to the main carousel and switch between the various game systems,
simply by pressing the B button on the controller. Once you get to the carousel, press Left or
Right on the directional pad to change game systems.
• To select a specific game system and see the list of games, just press the A button while on the
selected system.
• Note: You can also change game systems by pressing Left or Right on the directional pad while
viewing a game list within a system.
• There are three ways to scroll through lists of games.
o Press Up or Down on the directional pad to scroll through individual games.
o Press the L and R shoulder buttons (located at the top of the controller) to scroll up and
down through multiple games at a time. The R button scrolls down the list, the L button
scrolls up the list.
o Press the Select button while viewing a list of game and use the Jump To… option to
select the starting number or letter of the game. Once you set the Jump To… to the
appropriate letter, press the A button to jump to the first game of that starting number
or letter. Use one of the two previous methods (direction pad or shoulder buttons) to
then find and select the specific game.
• To select and start a specific game, highlight it, then press the A button.
• To quit a game and return to the game list, press and hold Select then press Start at any time
during game play.
• Note: When starting and quitting a game, ignore the grey configuration box. If you accidentally
press a button and do get to the blue configuration screen, just press down and highlight “Quit
without loading” and press the A button, this should return to the game list.
• While in the Emulation Station carousel and menus, the A and B buttons on the controller usually
always correspond to selecting and going back to previous (A selects an item, B returns to
previous menu/screen).
• Pressing Select in Emulation Station will bring up a secondary menu with the Jump To... option,
the rest are unused. Pressing Start will bring up the Main Menu with multiple options. Sound
settings should be left as is, except for the Volume control, which can be used to adjust sound
volume in the system.
• Favorites: One option found within the carousel of game systems, is as the name suggests, a
custom collection of specific favorite games. Favorites can be used to cut down on finding the
same game in its original system list. To add a game to the Favorites collection, go into the
system list, highlight the game, then press Y. To remove a game from Favorites, again highlight
the game in either the Favorites collection or the original game system list, and press Y.
• Game System Controls: Controls for all systems should be set up, however different systems
use a different number of buttons.
o NES and Sega Master System use two buttons (primarily A and B)
o Sega Megadrive (Genesis) uses 3 (A, B, and Y)
o SNES uses 4-6 depending on the game
o Neo-Geo and PC Engine can use 2-6 depending on the game
o Atari may use 1 (A or B) or none
• Shutting Down the RPi system: To properly shut down the system and minimize risk of
corrupting the data on the SD card, press the Start button while in a system game list or the
Emulation Station carousel. This will bring up the Main Menu, then simply select Quit, press A,
then select Shutdown System and press A, select Yes, press A. Once the screen is blank and
the green light on the RPi device stops blinking, you can unplug the power adapter from the RPi
or outlet.
• Note: If for any reason the system locks up or can’t be shut down normally, you can unplug the
power adapter and then plug it back in to restart the system and shut it down normally.
Occasionally doing this should be fine, but generally you want to shut down properly.
