TOPIC:

LEARNING CODE
COMPETENCY: Draft Elevations and Sections
TLE_ICTD9-12AL-IIg-i-7
1. Define Elevation drawing;
2. Explain the different vertical heights from grade lines to top of the
LEARNING
OBJECTIVES: roof;
3. Draw vertical heights from grade lines to top of the roof for
elevations.
IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the learner’s activity and
assessment sheets provided separately.

UNDERSTAND
It has been said that one of the most important part of an architectural working drawing is the
ELEVATION. This contains data’s or the image of the house or the structure, typically most clients
would love to see the exterior part of the house, the building or any structure.
Elevation: An “elevation” is a drawing that shows the front or side of something. It has
also been defined that elevation is used to show the exterior or interior part of the house.

Terms and abbreviation used in elevation:

1. G. L. Grade Line
2. F. L. / F. F. L. Floor Line/ Finish Floor Line
3. C. L. Ceiling Line
4. B. L. Beam Line
Preliminary Sketches
The location and proportion of features are very important in the drawing of elevation. Main
attention is given to the proportion of walls and openings. Some of the things to consider in the
drawing of elevations are;

1. Proportion –This deals with the size and shape of areas and their relation to one another.
2. Fenestration –deals with the arrangements of windows and doors in a wall.
3. Harmony refers to all features that should harmonize to present a uniform elevation.
4. Shadows refer to a simple elevation, which can become interesting when designed to take
advantage of shadows.

Finished Sketches
The finished sketch may be carefully drawn with the use of drawing instruments. Since these are
fairly large scale drawings the exact size of all features together with their correct representation must
be considered. In the drafting of elevations, these are some of the things to consider:

1. Window and Door Size –must be chosen from a manufactures catalogue which offers great variety
of sizes. The sizes must be standard that it conforms to the provisions of the building code.
2. Window and Door Representation –in elevation may be drawn simply.
3. Material Representation –may be shown by drawing only a few lines, like bricks.
4. Footings and Walls are hidden lines used to indicate location of footings.
2|P a g e
5. Labelling views can be done in two methods by labelling it with views as in front, rear, left and right
side elevations, or by using compass orientation as in north, south, east, and west directions.
6. Dimensioning on elevations are limited to vertical dimensions are shown on the plan.
7. Changes are additions necessary after all the other drawings have been completed.

Vertical Heights of an elevation.

The vertical heights of an elevation based on the standard of National Building Code of the
Philippines are as follows;

 Grade line to finish floor line (G.L. – F.F.L.): 0 .30 meters minimum. In the latest design the
minimum height is at 0. 50 meters.
 Finish floor line to ceiling line (F.F.F. – C.L.): 2.70 meters to 3. 00 meters is the ideal vertical
height.
 Ceiling line to Beam line (C.L. – B. L.): 0. 20 meters to .30 meters
 Beam Line to Top of the Roof: 1.50 meters to 2.50 meters it depends on the size or floor area
of the structure as this affects the proportion and balance of the house.

SAQ-1: How many elevation drawings are there all in all? List down the different elevations.
SAQ-2: How do we draw or sketch the elevation?

Let’s Practice!

To find out how much you have learned from our lesson, you are going to sketch the given drawing
with prescribe height measurement for elevations in reference for ceiling plan.

Instruction: use separate answer sheet

1. Set the drawing tools, materials and equipment needed for the task.
2. Sketch the border line and title block; fill in all the information needed.
3. Use 4h as guide pencil for construction line and HB pencil to finalize the lines.
4. Set the metric scale into 1: 50 meters.
3|P a g e
5. Centre the drawing.
6. Sketch or draft the elevation drawing based on the given measurements and vertical heights of
each features.
 G.L. – F.F.L.: 0.50 Meters
 F.F.L. – C.L.: 2.80 Meters
 C.L. – B.L.: 0.25 Meters
 B.L. – Top of the roof 1.50 Meters
7. Submit the final output.
8. Title: Reflected Ceiling Plan.

REMEMBER
Key Points

 In laying out elevation, one must remember the following:

A. Each vertical height must always be considered and put to a priority.

B. Learning elevation is simply focusing more on 3d aspect of a house.

C. Mastering each measurement gives more realistic houses and structures.

D. Make sure to apply the basic health and safety protocols in laying out building designs.

TRY
Let’s see how much have you learned today!

Directions: Read the questions carefully and understand. Write your answer on the separate
sheet of paper.

___________1. An architectural working drawing that shows the side of something.

___________2. Grade line is also known as.

___________3. The suggested height of finish floor line to ceiling line.

4|P a g e
___________4. What is the basis of drafting elevation drawing?

___________5. Suggested height from grade line to finish floor line.

___________6. B.L. is also known as.

___________7.The abbreviation of ceiling line is.

___________8. Suggested height for ceiling line to beam floor line.

___________9. Where do we get all the basis of architectural standard measurements?

___________10. Suggested height of beam line to the top of the roof.
